Now a followup segment should be done to identify how Indiana University was the first university in the country to have a black player drafted in the NFL. Well before others, like Notre Dame. Need to give IU it's long overdue kudos!!!🎉
True story! My grandfather came out as a South Bend citizen with the ND students against the Klan that day. The title of this piece has very little to do with the the four players shown as you see them. Although, football player protestors were there as students only and really had nothing to do with football at that very moment. Oddly, the pool hall in South Bend that is mentioned in this piece was Ditto Hunt's Mad House where George Gipp played pool and poker. I can tell you more, just ask.
I love and respect Notre Dame ☘️❤️ We are the Fighting Irish Brothers for Justice Truth and the American fill in the blank 😱☘️ and GO IRISH ☘️ to Victory ✌️ and love☘️
KKK was even in Maine. The Union Army had entire Regiments that were Catholic but Maine elected one of the most virulent anti Catholic Governor in the US. US Grant ditched Gov. Blaine after Civil War vets called on the former general. Blaine’s career was over.
Indiana University had the first black player to be selected to play in the NFL and his statue stands at the north end of IUs stadium. He started at IU in 1945. WONDER WHY ND DIDN'T HAVE ANY BLACK PLAYERS ON THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM UNTIL 8 YEARS AFTER IU??? RACISM POSSIBLY???
@ ma 1 - Hey, Coach Sanders , Coach Freeman and Coach Franklin ( and others ) could NEVER have been head coaches in the past, but they are getting their shots now. The "numbers" are still pitiful, and white people have NO PROBLEM at all believing that hiring practices are fair. This will go on FOREVER . . . it is the country we live in . . . .
The reputation of Notre Dame and its students went up in my estimation.
That’s how they got the name fighting Irish
The 1920’s Klan also wielded guns and nooses. They were just as violent and evil as the predecessor. A very sorry chapter in our history.
Wow! A different take on the 1924 ND season ! TY!

Being born and growing up in Indiana this was never taught in school that is for sure.
God, country, Notre Dame

What a story!! 😊
The Knights of Columbus council on the ND campus was heavily involved in fighting the KKK. The KKK was huge in Indiana.
Excellent opportunity too bad mouth Indiana, talk football, and to advance Irish identity, and pride.
Indiana is the Alabama of the Midwest; some here probably still have Klan sympathies.
Honestly discussing actual Indiana history is not “bad mouthing” Indiana.
Yesterday Today Forever
The Klan marched in parades, too. As far North as they could go. Now there are Chick Tracts.

Stupid point pal
@@blueringer3092 Actually it is a very good question and no need to be rude.
@@DanielGrady-pf1pd think there the ones being rude bringing up racism from 85 years ago
3 years ago and it has 8 comments
Maybe that is because a lot of Americans feel the same way the Klan does.
