    BTW, you don't want to fully charge the battery to 345V unless you have a fan blowing on the battery sticks as the battery's thermal management system is disabled. Just charging it to 310 volts should be enough to get the car started. Then just let the vehicle run and charge the battery until the ICE shuts off.

    Life just got much easier for this. First, you can leave the HVTB in the vehicle, we ground down a torx bit to access the bolts on the front sides of the cover. You can get at the ones mid-side with channelocks. This is easier with the trim panels removed. Now for the HUGE time saver. You do NOT need to remove all those internal parts on the passenger side of the HVTB. On the driver side of the HVTB there is now a bundle of cables wrapped in gray foam where the charging circuitry was for the 2005-2008 models. Unwrap the foam. Ford left the connectors for that 05-08 charging circuitry on that cable. The gray one is positive and the black one is negative. They are on the ends of the wires in the orange split conduit that goes into the side of the battery trays. Connect your charging cable to those and you can charge the battery that way. This is now less than a one hour job and WAAAY easier. I left my cable permanently connected and ran in out the side of the HTVB with a safety cap on it.

Otherwise the only way to fix the problem would be to remove all the cells and charge them in parallel. I think the video poster left all this information out so that viewers do not endanger themselves charging a battery with over 300 volts, because the battery would not be in “service mode” or safe mode.

      The charger shown in the video is MEAN WELL HLG-120H-C350B or similar. This is big omission in an otherwise excellent video. Figuring out the charger and the connections is a really hard part that is completely glossed over. The charger is 430V and the battery is 350V or less. However this works because the internal resistance of the batteries and the charger keeps the current low. The connections to the battery have to be created; there is simply no off-the shelf terminals that will work especially for the bottom one that is like a tuning fork. We used large spike terminals that had to be formed into flat strips to stick in the terminal and alligator clips to connect them to the charger. The charger comes with no connectors. You even has to wire a house plug on the incoming side. Again...a lot of struggle that I wish was covered in the video.

    I received the power supply on Friday night, connected it to the battery on Saturday. Charged and measued the voltage. Close to 353 volts. Installed on Sunday. Cleared the codes and started it up. Drove around for a while. I noticed a few things: The regenerative braking seens to boost voltage/charge more than just running. The SOC (state of charge) is only 60%. Don't know if that will improve given how old it is. I stopoed running it Sunday at 3pm. I will check voltage again this afternoon too see how well it holds.I also connected 2 wire leads to the contactor at the battery, ran them out through the cooling vent so that I could check the battery with my DVM.

    • @snoobler
      @snoobler 3 года назад +2

      Regen braking is running the traction motor in reverse and is capable of much higher charge currents then the engine-attached motor/generator. SoC is normally around 50%. You don't want it running higher than that regularly. This is NOT an electric vehicle. The battery is most efficient at the 40-50% SoC level, and you always need available storage to capture the regenerative braking energy, or it is lost and efficiency drops.

Charging the original battery will be a lot cheaper with the method I was describing. Please make sure to follow all diagnostic steps before you decide to spend money. It is a Ford after all and can have a lot more problems than just an empty battery :-)

      Unless you have multiple shorted cells, you should not need to replace the battery. All it is NEEDED for is to start the motor. Note: if you have a bad 12v battery, the car will keep pulling power from the HV battery until it is run down (These cars do not have alternators..... just a DC to DC transformer).

I noticed that the charge indicator stayed in the middle range. I am not sure if the needle should move more than mine ins doing, staying midrange. Could this mean that while driving the hybrid battery is not recharging eventually discharging the battery so the car shuts down?

    Thank you so much for this great video.
    I have one question and one request if I may.
    on my 09 ford Escape hybrid, the Hybrid charge indicator (on the cluster) is almost in the middle but it still doesn't start. could the hybrid still need a charge?
    Also, would you write a brief instruction on how to attach the power supply to the Hybrid battery to the charge(I think the power supply you recommended has 3 wires)
    Thank you again

      Hello Ramin, It is very hard to give you a remote diagnose of your no start condition. Is it cranking but not starting, or is it doing nothing? If it is doing nothing then I would start with the auxiliary battery health. If the car was sitting around for a long time this could be issue. You should get a reading of 12.6 volts. If the battery isn’t fully charged, it will diminish to 12.4V at 75%, 12V when it’s only operating at 25%, and down to 11.9V when it’s completely discharged. If the aux battery is OK, then I would go and check the Hybrid Battery. You can download "forscan" (forscan.org/) and connect an OBD reader to go from here.
      If the car is cranking but would not start, then there are 100 more things to check.

      Regarding the charger: The charger has 3 wires on the input side. This is where you connect a plug that goes into your standard 120V outlet. The output side of the charger has only 2 wires. Blue is the minus side and brown the plus side. I hope this helps. You can buy my charger here: www.ebay.com/itm/264949908074. :-)

    Why did you choose to take the HV battery out to charge it? Why didn't you use the HV battery recharge override button in the driver's compartment? That allows you to charge directly from the 12v battery/charger. It won't get it up to a high state of charge but it will get it to the voltage necessary to start.

    • @JoeCarlinCA

    • @teardropjourneys1485
      @teardropjourneys1485  3 года назад +2

      The battery had to come out in order to open the lid. I was not able to get to two screws on the side. But if you can open the side screws then you can leave the pack in the car. If you then run a cable out from under the lid then you would be able to recharge the battery when you need. This would require a permanent connection somewhere at the relay. I have not done this since I am concerned of having a 350V plug sticking out of the battery.

      Yes, you can.. You can do this with the HVTB in place. Directions, including how to assemble the charger, are detailed in a thread at greenhybrid.com in a thread located in the Ford Cars: Ford Escape Hybrid subforum. entitled "HV Jump Start." There are also directions for permanently attaching a charging wiring harness to the HVTB so that charging set-up in the future would be a matter of 2-3 minutes.
