This is figuratively and literaly one of the hardest katas, I've ever seen & learned myself so far. To Bill Stone, you seem to be showing off, or don't have a right idea, what it means, to have such skillz of walking this pattern right. + after my humble opinion, (you) Luca Valdesi, do(es) an excellent perfomance right here.

Jesse Sensei, this seems to be a great performance with some minor, minor, minor mistakes probably because of the championship rush. He is a great performer!
But I would like to ask you, what is your personal opinion, about this performance and Budo Karate. (To me, it seems to be close enough.) Oss

Put the power away, relax, you're too tensed! What my Sensei would say. The gracefulness and beauty of the kata is ruined by the unnessary use of power and brute force. If you really want to go fast, you have to relax and only use power at the moment of impact otherwise, you're just wasting energy and you'll be tired by the end of the kata.

Once you have 5 years of kata training, do it any way you like. When you do it correctly, for you, you instantly know it and so does everyone observing. Your attitude, speed, power, intent, breathing, not your sensei's.

Estuvo muy bueno, una de las patadas estuvo a una altura menor que la otra (una de las que va después de la segunda) y eso fue lo que hizo que consiguiera el segundo puesto.

This is the most technically precise tournament kata I've ever seen Valdesi do. Not perfect by any means (I've never seem a perfect kata to be fair) but far better control and far fewer extraneous moves than most of his katas. For those who are saying he has plenty of speed and no power you need to get a better understanding of how to generate power, and speed is the most influential component, this is why little pieces of metal rip holes through flesh and bone when fitted from a gun.

    • @cookiesandcream2828

Aaron Kenneally Isn't 'hikite' the pulling back of a strike (like a punch), generally in KUMITE (free fighting), and you should not do it in a kata? Also, care explaining what 'kime' is? Majority of karatekas doesn't even know what that word mean, or is actually confused to what it actually mean. Look up Jesse Enkamp's article on Kime. Also, I have never heard of the word 'budo' in my dojo, ever.

I'm pretty sure that any karate kata matter as much as before regardless of what level we have or have had. You say that's not so good, but there is no a good kata or bad one or right and wrong steps. First you have to think that, Sensei told me not to do Meikyo competitions because it is a female kata and so I had to learn Unsu and i was defeated by someone who did use Meikyo :)

Real fights are ugly to watch where you don't see beautiful gedan barai or age uke. Even if you see them being executed, the arms are unlikely to be positioned at the right directions and angles that you would see in on-stage KATA performances.
KATA is of course a performance of the techniques. And you assume that your opponent facing you is of the same height with the same arm and leg reaches. So you assume that his solar plexus is located horizontally right across yours, not a millimetre higher or lower or to the left or right, and the same goes for his knee and so on, and that would be where you hit.
In a real fight, a lot depends on the height of the attacker and the height/angle his leg or arm is coming at you, and as every attacker and fight is different, your arms and legs are also going to be executing the techniques far removed from what is taught in a textbook every time you get into a fight with someone.
Spirit, power and focus, you said.
I think I saw a lot of power and focus in Luca's movements. As to spirit, that is a big BS, IMO. Karate is meant for three things: fighting, fighting and fighting. I would not spend a lifetime chasing after this elusive thing called "spirit" because I do not believe in it. I do Shotokan Karate and Tai Chi (Yang Chen and Sun styles) but Zen Buddhism and Taoism are not something I am into. Self defence techniques and health benefits are all I want by learning and practising Karate and Tai Chi. The only spirit I have is the fighting spirit, but how does one see such a "spirit"?
When I did KATA and Tai Chi Forms as though I was really fighting against someone, and in the chaos of punching and kicking air, my KATA and Tai Chi Forms became ugly to watch. Arms and legs were flying all over the place, at places they should not be.
