I am 69 years old started Carnatic music class a month ago. Great teacher. She encourages me. I know nothing about the information you gave. Very nice and useful. Bless you.
I am 55 and just starting to learn music. I am into drumming for past 3 months and loving it. I have looked at many videos to learn Carnatic music, but she is the one who can explain music for total beginners. I enjoy music, but have zero knowledge on swaras and raagas. I like the nice animations that she uses to explain the concepts. Loving it. Thank you Prathiba ji for these great videos.
oh my god. my lifelong question answered. wish my teacher had done all this, I would never have quit! finding my way back slowly.... thank you for being part of that journey!!!
Pranam mam🙏This was the question I asked today in my class, and I didn't get the answer with reason! Thanks mam, just a few hours ago,I raised this question in my First year Carnatic Vocal class at BHU, Varanasi;and I got the answer from you, from so far!🙏🙏🙏🙏 Please, keep guiding us Mam!
Always wondered why Sri Purandara Dasa choose this this raga to begin training with for Carnatic vocals. And when i learnt Veena, i started with this. Great video and some good comments too. Thanks Pratibha ji and everybody.
Very neat way of presenting, explaining. You have done it with lot of dedication. If one follows all these tips given by you, becomes an amazing singer. Thank you so much
I think you did a fantastic job of driving home the rudiments which will stand us all in good stead with respect to understanding other raagas as well...the pictorial representation was also very crisp and self explanatory. Keep it up lady
Thanks Mam.. I have been singing all these years without any knowledge of Music. You are imparting lot of basics for people like us. Thank you. Sunil Chennai
T.Q.madam....you cleared our doubt..why mayamalava goula ragam is taught for beginners.. wonderful insight about the raga with clear demo.. you have wonderful voice mam. It's God's gift...GOD bless you.
Thanq so much....nobody gets a teacher like u..even if we go for paid classes....u are very clear and visuals make it even better...i hope i can also learn soon oneday....tqq 😊 guru
Very simple explanation for critical things. Mß. Prathibha your parents names you very good meaning and you are absolutely keeping it. How I can improve my breathing longer, because of you I am learning in easy way for my music. I started last month. Pls post for starters with the lesson #s in the title. This gives us easy to search. Thanks
Thank you for your kind words! I shall try and simplify the serial order of videos. However, please note that these videos are not actually sequential. Each video is of a different topic and may not be related to the previous video. If you are looking for complete structured courses, please take a look at the VoxGuru app :-)
I loved this music for a long time and never knew it was so structured and precise. I always thought that the oscillations and slides were just artistic styling from each singer. I've a lot to learn on my Carnatic journey :). (Western drummer that is very interested in the rhythms of India)
The music is codified down to the microtones, the gamakas are anything but arbitrary. Maybe easier understanding what's happening on a fretted instrument like the veena rather than vocal music.
Thx ma'am my daughter is 5 years we have joined her to class before 4 month now i can show this video and motivate her and also i will try to make her understand the importance of this raga . 🙏 thx a lot
As a kid I too was taught beginning this "scale", but had to stop the lessons after 2 weeks after my parents were transferred to a different city. I have always instinctively loved this raga and never realized why until I started googling and finally found that name "Mayamalavagoula". Thanks for this superb introduction!
Thank you for your valuable time in making this video, have been confused with the notations and also had the same qn why mayamalavagoula. This video nailed it. Thanks again!
Awesome video. Thank you for the information. Pranams to Sangeetha Pithamaha Sri Purandara Dasa who made Mayamalavagaula as the basic Raga to start with.
Thanks so much for the efforts. Had heard mayamaalavagoula bring practiced around but the intervals, mirrored notes just makes one go a little deeper. It is obvious you have a talent for teaching.
You are such an amazing teacher!!! I am so glad I found your link! BTW I know nothing about music and these lessons are making me wish I had learnt music when I was young, but still enjoying this so much! Thank you!
Awesome points. I did realise the symmetry but other points which you mentioned was eye opening to me. Another thing I felt is. In MMG, all notes come in adjacent pairs. SR GM PD NS Which might help a beginner focus on only two notes at a time to break it down to simpler chunks
i have started learning carnatic music in keyboard , i was taught the maayamalavagowla last week , this video was eye opening. i always feel this depth of information is needed to be understood by each student which inspires us more
I heard another story about Mayamalavagowla. As all these basic music exercises were developed by Purandaradasa, his reason for choosing this raga was it would be easy for a beginner to practice on the veena, because of the spacing of the frets, as he was a vainika himself
I am fortunate enough to have got training in Hindustani music and also a little insight of Carnatic music. I have always had this question in mind, why Mayamalavagoula/Bhairav is the first raga we learn. Well, yes, we learn singing the notes and alankaras with all the Shuddha swaras, equivalent to Shankaravaranam but the raga we first learn is raga Bhairav (equivalent to Mayamalavagoula) in Hindustani music along with raga Yaman (only Madhyama is teevra). I guess all I'm trying to say is thanks a lot for this video. I've got the answer now and feeling so thrilled about it.
Very good introduction to open the knowledge, understanding of the basics for learning and singing the ragas, hope it continues, great lecture Ms Pratibha! Thanks 🙏
Thanks for the detailed explanation...... got to know the deeper aspects of the Swaras which were not known till date... appreciate your efforts... will continue to watch other videos so I can benefit from learning them, PraNaam
Thanks to our Purandara Daasaru to set this raga as basics. Thank you so much Ma'am, for explaining it so good. If you can explain other ragas also like this along with their janya ragas it would help a lot..🙏🙏
My admiration for your knowledge and clarity of your explanation is growing by the day. *You know what to tell, how much to tell and how to tell.* You are simply excellent in your field.
Wow!! That was a wonderful explanation! I love carnatic music though I have never had the opportunity to learn. But I keep hearing and enjoying songs everyday. Loved ur analysis and explanation. I often visualise a noise free atmosphere with this Ragam in the back ground.. for that matter many lovely raagas and enjoy the bliss. I think even for meditation RUclips is flooded with so many. But just these ragas would be more than great to make one enjoy THE BLISS. Kudos to your efforts!
Thanks. One question. When calculating the intervals we need to consider only 12 keys and not 16 ? If so why. Kindly clarify. All 16 swarms sthanam can be mapped to one of the 12 keys in the keyboard?
I know it has all three types of intervals, but I always believed that this Raga, emphasized the single semi-tones so much that made the the student start of with the harder aspects off the bat, if they did Shankara Barnum then this wouldn't have been available for them and they would have to get this skill later in their training. This is very unique across all other cultures, Purandara Dasa is truly amazing.
Very good observation . So 00 S or Unison 01 r or min.2nd 02 R 03 g 04 G or Maj.3rd 05 m Perfect 4th 06 M 07 P Perfect 5th 08 d min.6th 09 D 10 n 11 N ... Major 7th 12 S' ... Finally a channel that explains Carnatic music properly to the English audience. Thanks ma'am for your effort.
This is so amazingly explained. Thank you so much. The symmetry, swara spacing, balanced gamakas is so scientifically thought about.
Always wondered why Sri Purandara Dasa choose this this raga to begin training with for Carnatic vocals. And when i learnt Veena, i started with this.
Great video and some good comments too. Thanks Pratibha ji and everybody.
I, honestly, do not understand Ragas - however, I certainly do realise how complex and mathematical correct they are!
Sorry sir.. i was wrongly spelled your name for a moment then i spotted and spelled correctly..
What a great teacher you are, my dear. God bless you.
Thanks a lot!
@Sargam in Carnatic its raga and its Swara only
@Sargam Go and learn Sanskrit before commenting !!
@Sargam pls learn before commenting. This lady has vast knowledge in music. No music teachers teach or give the details like her.
I never watched this type of brilliant teaching on music
Well executed Pratibha Ji... You are amazing!!!
"Deva Deva kalayamithe" is one of my favourite Swathi Thirunal krithis in the raga 'Mayamalavagowla'
Very neat way of presenting, explaining. You have done it with lot of dedication. If one follows all these tips given by you, becomes an amazing singer. Thank you so much

Simply superb! I have loved Carnatic music all my life with less than zero knowledge. Thank you for this.

your singing is very beautiful and we yearn to listen to it more ! perfect voice for a classical singer !GOD bless you .

Thank you for your valuable time in making this video, have been confused with the notations and also had the same qn why mayamalavagoula. This video nailed it. Thanks again!
It's similar to raag bhairav in Hindustani classical.
