Rebuilding an Old Sailboat - 1964 Pearson Vanguard 32' Full Keel [Ep 01]

- I recently purchased a 1964 Pearson Vanguard 32' Sloop in hopes to travel and live aboard it when not working at the farm. Here's my first episode and tbh, it's a tad weird filming videos without my animal friends. We shall see how awkward this gets and I really do hope you enjoy me documenting the rebuilding and refitting of an old sailboat!

Congratulations take your time make sure everything’s done right you’re awesome man
Hey Dan, I hope the refit is going well. I have the exact same boat - Pearson Vanguard. The previous owner did a lot of the same work you are doing - I had to recommission everything as it sat for 3 years on the hard. Been through everything and it's solid boat - worth the effort to fix it up. It sails great - fun ride as it heels over a lot due to the hull design. I will be watch - thanks for taking us along. Let me know if I can help with anything. Cheers!
That hull to deck joint looks pretty dam good to me dude. I had a cascade 29 that had rot on the inside of the hull to deck joint. The shear plank or sometimes called clamp was rotted in areas. Turned out to be more than I wanted to tackle although it wasn't really a huge repair. I'm in the process of purchasing a 1966 32 foot pearson vangaurd thats in remarkably good shape for 12 thousand. They have a reputation for being one of the best passage making boats around.
You’ve got quite the project list! It’s great to see you fulfilling your other passions! 🙌🏼
Thanks so much! 😊
Hello
Being on the water is such a beautiful, freeing feeling. Some of the best sunsets, and people. This will be an amazing journey for you. Really happy for you. The hard work will make it all worthwhile. 💕
Thank you! I’ve already met some amazing people already!
Hello
I do not know anything about the world of boats and navigation but It's a fascinating project and what an adventure it will be!
Its not boring...granted I don't know alot about what you are talking about since I know very little about boats but thats why it is interesting
Have fun!
dan i own #38 1963 good luck. the basics are there with ypur boat i know it will be great in the end
Thank you Neil! I'm making great progress. It feels good!
Ahh that's so amazing. Was following your work at Instagram. So it's sooo cool to see it on RUclips 😍😍
Be careful with the epoxy. I made some diy stuff with it I was not so careful so it started to steam and killed the plastic cup 😅
Nice project, nice lines , but seriously get the right tools for the job , and with glassing stuff , get every thing organized first and follow the steps accurately , Is she solid deck or balsa core ,if so u need to seal of the inside of the whole ,,Sam showed this ,,in rebuild...,,,,,,restored a 33 ft Carvel last year during lock down ,have been in the water for a year living aboard on a mooring, welcome to the boating Community,,,best people you'll ever meet ,, next to the motorcycle Community, ,,nice triumph by the
way.,.,,,,look forward to your endeavors, and the finished project,
Congratulations Dan on pursuing your dreams! I'm looking foward to watching your journey! Stay motivated😊‼️
Thanks so much!!
Hello
Nice job keep going!
Thank you!
This is so exciting to watch!!! Can you please show us some of the work as you are doing it so we can see how? Hehe
Yes of course. Thank you Patty!
I did some renovation on a small motorboat with my dad its so much fun when all the hard work is done and you can finally enjoy the boat. we went on a trip around some small Islands here in Denmark this summer, It's so pretty out there on the water. We allso have a solitary dolphin in the harbor close to where we live, sometimes he comes and say hallo and follow our boat for a little while. 🙂🐬🚤
Oh and by the way We have used dark fabric for our curtains it keeps the light out nicely, but you can of course also use some blackout fabric.
All the best to you on this adventure!
Thank you Karlyn!
Happy for you, dude. Best of luck with your sailing adventure. 🤙🏻
Thanks Pedro!
This is interesting, i wish you nothing but the best in you project🙌
Thank you!
Blackout curtains are good🤙, i have such in the bedroom window because otherwise i can’t get sleep. Especially in the summer they are best because the nights are bright😊
Most definitely! My boat is sadly placed right below a flood light that turns on at 8:30pm every night until sunrise too. 🤦♂️
@@DanMcKernan bummer...🤦🏻♀️
What a fun, learning adventure!
We need to know your boat work playlist.
That's a great question! Any recommendations?
@@DanMcKernan
Needtobreathe is always a jam. Cinematic soundtracks are great for studying, my guess is they’d translate. Start with The Truman Show and let apple/Spotify make a great playlist from there. If you like to sing, musicals!
I'm loving this 😄❤️
Get blackout material for your curtains /blinds, please keep this up its good.
It isn't boring
thank you!
जय हो
What Happened-did you quit working on your boat like the rest of us? I need you for inspiration. I have this exact same boat. Mines in a lot better shape than yours fortunately but recently I broke my neck and have been unable to work on it. Watching these videos helps so now you are commanded by the Universe to bring them back
If that's hull #2. That's my dad's boat.
Saçının bu şekli çok hoş uzun zaman oldu senin kanalını izlemeyeli iyi görünüyorsun neyse hoşçakal
What do Maggie and Sadie think of the boat? :D
Sadie is definitely more of a fan :)
Do you have a name for your boat now?
Dan, what's the hull number?
Hull number 261
@@DanMcKernan mine is 264 :-D
Ok I’m sorry I just have to ask where are you getting all this money to do this I know that your nonprofit organization for your animals and I love you for it I am not saying nothing negative about it I’m just curious that’s all I’m sorry I’m not putting you down I love love love what you do
No offense taken at all. I've been saving money much longer since starting the sanctuary 5 years ago. I used to work in tech startups and was given equity within the companies too. The boat cost me $6,000, I don't own a home, I live with my dad, and I'm single. I hope that helps answer your question.
It's Dan's hobby Sharlene, barns his work x,how are you?
@@chantelclarke508 yes I know I didn’t mean it in a bad way I know he’s a good guy it was just a question I’m sorry if I offended you or anybody here I think you’re great day sorry I even asked the question.
@@sharleneles5905 i know that! you're a lovely person xx
This will be more interesting if you actually show us!
Buddy, I have a Vanguard myself...hull #347, and I have to rewire as well ...eventually. The leaks are an easy one...the most come from the stanchion poles. Resin and butyl caulk is the answer. Let's stay in contact! I'd love to talk about engine and dinema standing rigging. Cheers @sailing_volunteer
Awesome! Just gave you a follow on IG too - @danmckerna 🤙
Go diesel cheaper more efficientl and you'll be ripping the electric motor out in a year
