- Marriages of convenience, or sham weddings, are an illegal way of obtaining residency and citizenship in Europe countries and elsewhere.
This film meets men and women who marry - or plan to marry - people they hardly know, with the sole objective of obtaining European residency for one of them. These deals can sometimes cost one of the "partners" as much as 15,000 euros ($18,100) with no guarantee of citizenship in return.
A so-called "white marriage" is where both parties willingly participate in fraud but stay together. But in what are called "grey marriages", the whole venture is a charade in which one party not only plays the system but also deceives the other, often with shattering consequences.
Despite the risks, some see sham marriages as a less dangerous form of migration than crossing the sea in a rubber dingy.
In this film, we meet six characters who have either been involved in a "grey marriage" already - and suffered the shock and humiliation of being deceived - or who are planning to use marriage as a means to a better future.

Honestly the person who tells you to get married is the one who cares, life is short enjoy while you are young and raise a family, there will be time you will say I have made wrong decision. Your parents advice are the right advice,they have good intention and experiance of life.

In 50 years old my kid will only be 15years old and may still be immature to handle situations and at 50 I may start to loose my prime of life, I don't want them struggle. Forward, at 40, if I get a kid at that age and so on. I accepted reality, though I am not closing my doors-I simply just doing the logic and not being selfish. Having a family is and investment and also needs investment.

Throughout most of history, marriage has been ONLY transactional - this idea of marriage for love is something which has only existed for a few hundred years, and in only certain parts of certain (mostly Western) societies, at that. If a person wants to better his/her life by moving to a country with more opportunities, arranging a marriage is just one way among many.

I understand the whole point of the documentary, but the way it's presented is a bit confusing. Jumping from one narrative to another without any hint on what's going on, or who's who. And I'm pretty sure some people would have recognized those in the interview, faces were almost seen.

Very informative documentary but it was " all over the place." I had a hard time making out who was initiating the SHAM marriage for most of the couples, except for the blonde lady and the guy who met a woman on the dating site. I think in their case it was a GREY marriage and not a sham. Idk I couldn't tell, there wasn't much clarification. To reiterate what others have said,, a voice translator would really fair better then having to read word from word.

Genuine relationships applying for visa permits suffer because of this. They are l judged and assessed with scrutiny...and forced to "prove" the relationships is real. With..joint assets.. bank statements etc. This will get your visa application rejected. Happened to me and my husband for UK spouse visa!
Yup, even worst in USA. Many couples have resorted to have babies in order to prove that they are truly in love.

I can never understand the insanity of young European women marrying Muslim Middle Eastern men, how naive and uninformed do you have to be.
Then you have children with them, and you no longer the only victim, but also your children.
It's hard when someone is in love, some people become blind.
It’s not in Europeans’ nature to be sceptical, because we have lived for centuries in societies with nothing but decent and honest people around us. You don’t need to have your guards up when dealing with other Europeans, so it’s only natural that many would then use the same approach with foreigners. Infact being sceptical and having your guards up is a very non-European thing. It’s very easy especially for young people to become blinded by the society you have grown up in and think that everywhere else is the same.

In India culturally marriage is a bond between two families not just two persons.Marriage is considered as essential stage of life unless person adopts Sanyas.
So the concept of arranged marriage is very different concept in INDIA.Upto a certain extent this thing also true for all Indian Subcontient countries.
But I can't comment for Arab world & East Asia
Some women in South Africa found them to be married with no idea to whom.

Im a refugee over 15 years and still single, the reason I never wanted to marry someone because most of them wanted to get the advantages, not to be a real wife.
Your time is coming- Just mingle in the right circles and get to know someone for real - marriage is a good thing when both parties have mutual feelings

Sham wedding needs to stop. Women in Europe and USA should be more careful. They have to know if the man is right.

In 1980 I married a woman from the other side of the planet. She was older than I am and far better educated.
When she had cleared her J-1 visa and returned she began the process of applying for citizenship while we got on with our lives.
After waiting far longer than average for her to be accepted, I went to the immigration office and asked to speak with the a supervisor.
I pointed out that I am an Army veteran, we have been married for years, mixing our finances and living together. I waited for almost three years for her to return to me in California and can’t understand why she isn’t being granted citizenship.
My wife was told that there would be a swearing in the next day and she was invited.
I am convinced that they thought we had a sham marriage and my anger convinced this manager otherwise.
And we’re still married.

They need to say no citizenship through marriage without being married and living together for 10 years. This would flush out the sham marriages.

No it's not too long. If 2 to 3 years and divorce then why should that person get citizenship. 10 years is harder to fake.

@@Dis_is_fine Often it is their fault because many of these foreigners marry for green cards and citizenship . Plus let each go to their country of origin. Kids can visit the other country for a month in the summer.

I feel proud of my country Pakistan and my culture because our women never did such act to have foreign nationality, and our men are famous all over in Europe for their straightforwardness if it's love it is else it is agreement.

Them sham or paper weddings are quick access to citizenship and status. It works.

95% of arranged marriage in SE Asia? What country are you from? I'm from the PH and I would runaway than be subjected to an arranged marriage. In my country, most marriages are still out of love and voluntary, but there are numerous cases when one married for other reasons and visa is one of them so the definition of arranged marriage whether from western or asian perspective is very much the same, they get married for something else other than love. For them, marriage is nothing but business, a piece of contract, where its either one of the parties gets the most benefit.

Who knew romance scamming was not just an American issue?

With money, you can buy anything. 1 million$ will get you a passport in over 10 countries (plus you get the money back after 10 years) ; Where there is Refugee acceptance in the pass, or people from poorer countries, You will have this. (IE, Philippines, Vietnam, Africa, Venezuela etc etc) I didn't mention China (or Asean ruled countries is because, most Chinese think Canada is not fun and unprofitable if not real estate ; only good for education.. That's about it.)
Lately: Syrians, and Africans from USA (due to Trump crackdown) ; they just walk across to Canada.: Truduh Doing!.. Syrian refugee killed a 12 year old girl in a Park!..
