  • Recently I have been working on the Shanghainese language, a dialect of Wu Chinese that's quite different from either Mandarin or Cantonese.

    For anyone who is interested (or linguistic nerds lol), tho I am not sure which variety of Wu this is exactly, Shanghainess normally refers to a sum or mixture of different varieties of 太湖片苏沪嘉小片 variety, which is a variety of Wu; but Wu itself is more of an umbrella term. But because of the decrease proficiency of Wu for many Shanghainess people and increase of proficiency of Mandarin and influence of it, Shanghainess is going through "dialectisation" (more mutually intelligible with Mandarin), which results in that under the context of linguistic or day to day life, Shanghainess can also refer to the kind of a variety which people in Shanghai speak but not with majority of Wu language, instead a variety independently of a mixture of Mandarin (but phonetically and phonologically influenced by Wu) and 太湖片苏沪嘉小片 Wu or 市区 Wu specifically

    I've never seen a polyglot who is learning Shanghainese. How did you find the material to learn? I feel like Shanghainese is one of the most difficult Chinese languages to learn because of the less recourse and less native speakers, I've heard that most of the Shanghainese can't speak Shanghainese nowadays, especially the younger generation.
    It's awesome that you're learning Shanghainese. And you also speak Mandarin (native) and Cantonese! Do you have a plan to learn Hokkien as well? :)
    BTW, myself being a native Cantonese speaker, knowing Mandarin, learning Hokkien. I'm also interested in the other Chinese languages such as Shanghainese and Hakka. But it's so difficult to find the material to learn the both.

    • @phoenixhou4486
      @phoenixhou4486  Год назад +2

      I have studied Hokkien for a few months before and can understand some. I think Hokkien is way more difficult than Wu Chinese because it bifurcated with other Chinese languages way before wu Chinese did. But they share some common features, such as constantly changing tones of characters.

    • @mirae9163
      @mirae9163 Год назад +1

      @@phoenixhou4486 Yeah, that's why many people says that Hokkien sounds like Korean or Japanese. I also feel that learning Hokkien as if I'm learning Korean or Japanese with Chinese grammar(it's slightly different but almost same).
