- How to install Lower Control Arms on Lexus GX470 / Toyota 4Runner / Fj Cruiser
Here's a video of me replacing lower control arms on my 4x4 Lexus GX470. The install is pretty much the same on 4Runners & Fj Cruiser since they share a similar chassis.
Torque Specs:
Lower Balljoint Mount: 118 lb*ft
Lower Control Arm Inner Bolts: 100 lb*ft
Lower Shock Bolt: 100 lb*ft
Lower Balljoint: 103 lb*ft

Just a note about hammering on the ball joint stud, if you hammer directly on the stud and it's really in there, you run the risk of mushrooming it and then you'll never get it out without grinding or cutting it. One trick is to put the nut back on for a few threads, then hammer on the nut. Once you crack it loose, take the nut off push it the rest of the way through.
He makes it look so easy. I'm pretty sure when I get my hand on the job, something might stuck and it'll take me hours to get it out.
Dead right mate, the sleeve on the front adjuster is stuck in mine and I'm thinking I'll just chop it out......I do have new adjusters & bolts with my upgraded lower control arms, so no worries trying to get it out without damage 👍
Goota love a dude using an office chair, SUBBED
Thanks for posting. 👍🏻
Bout burnt my gx down trying to replace those lowers. They were proper seized into those sleeves/bushings. You make it look so easy! Fair warning to anyone who lives in areas where they salt the roads in the winter time. This is NOT easy. (2016 GX460 done 09/2023)
Oof Seized bolts are the death of me..Did you end up getting it done?
@@OverlandRay yeah, took up my entire day but it's done now!
Sweet! What did you do to take out the seized sleeves? Lube & impact? @@Mr.Preston3991
@@OverlandRay Fire and air hammer. I had to burn the bushings to a crisp so that I could heat up the sleeves then use the air hammer to force the bolts out! Worked well though, lol.
Another video I watched the guy just cut them out with a sawzall because his replacement arm had replacement sleeves and bolts.
your voice is so soothing
Lmfao 🤣 I could imagine Ray cringing as he’s reading your comment. That is why he didn’t respond back. Lmfao yo I’m dead
Nice video. I swapped mine yesterday. Pretty scary drive from my house to the tire shop for an alignment. It was like the tires were trying to fight each other. 🤣 smooth as silk after the alignment though.
did you go with Superpro LCA too?
ALWAYS go with a complete lower control arm replacement ( genuine OEM) and good idea to put new ball joints while in there with new camber bolts, usually they are seized up.Will need an alignment afterwards
Good job
Always leave the jack under for added protection or a second jack stand. dont depend on ONE when under the vehicle.
I always put the wheel under too.
Nice work. Did you go with OEM or something else?
If I want to take both of my LCA's off and then bring them to a shop to change the bushings and then come back, how am I going to stabilize the suspension/brake system to be able to sit there for a few days potentially without an LCA put in? Is this possible? Do I need a 2nd set of jackstands or what do I need to do?
Where did you get your control arms, are they holding up well? Trying to get new ones myself. Thanks!
Nice video, I noticed you did not adjust your your cam locks for your caster to the recommended 2 to 4 degrees positive Fyi, this makes a big difference for amy oversize tires to not rub on the frame behind your tires.
Thanks for the info! The alignment shop adjusted everything for me.. No rubbing for me!
How much will you charge for this job?
Thanks nice video very helpfull
Nice tutorial. Brother put one tire under the car for safety if the car falls.
I have a lexus rx450h with air suspension. Can i jack up my car like conventional coil spring car ??? Should i do something before jackup the car ??
Great video, thanks! My VX is prone to a disconcerting and unexpected wandering when loaded up and at about 110 kph or above. New tyres, Shocks, etc etc. Could these bushes be shot on mine? Why did you replace yours? Kind regards. Kallie
My bushings were shot
What brand should I get for my 2004 gx
Getting ready to do this job on my 07 FJ Cruiser. I am hoping that my cam bolts come off that easy.
Good luck brotha! Hopefully, your cam bolts aren't seized. I heard it's a bitch and a half to get them out if they're seized.
@@OverlandRay thank you. Yes that is my biggest fear. My FJ is rust free but some bolts may have some rust. I shot them with PB blaster. So I will find out when I wake up and start this install.
Ball joints don’t need to be clocked with weight in the suspension like bushings.
Hi i have a gx 470 2003 i have vibration on the sterring will after 50 miles. Do you think it can be the reason the lower control arm ??
Could be a factor of things. I would check your ball joints & control arm bushings. It could also be that your wheels are unbalanced.
Anyone noticed he has the same music in the background as demolition ranch into ?
Just replace the ball and bushings. Nothing wrong with the control arm. Toyota makes a stout lower arm.
Did you vsc lights come on before you got your alignment? I just did the install and my lights came on and I’m assuming it’s because of the bad alignment currently
My Cam bolts are seized so it looks like new LCAs for my 06. I am seeing a lot of different prices. 600+ for OEM. F that. Also seeing more reasonable 180$ a set. I mean it probably comes down to bushing quality, They are all stamped steel. Anyone have recommendations?
Do you have to drop your diff after your lift and rims?
I didn't do a Diff drop after installing the lift & rims.
Where did u get the torque specs from ?? I need to re torque mine
I just looked it up online. Always good to double check your bolts!
Es buena marca Freedom off Road? O es mejor oem?
OEM es siempre el mejor
Just checking flight prices, cheaper to fly you down to Australia to do it for me and take you out bush for a week than going to a mechanic.
LOL sheesh. Or you can try to tackle it yourself n treat your self to a nice fancy dinner after aha
hi what brand of control arm do you recommend?
I only had experience with SPC so SPC since they're pretty affordable with good adjustability.
did you notice a difference in ride quality with the new LCA?
Oh yea, it definitely feels more comfortable than before.
Oh, by the way: It's done 225000 kms.
Why not just press out the old bushing and put a new bushing in?
Some cars can just replace bushings some can’t. This is whole unit which has ball joint as well. For a DIY easier to replace whole unit, shops may or may not change bushings because you have to remove the arm anyway, and old car could have complications.
wheel alignment is destroyed...
Why do you say that?
