Insulin is a protein hormone that is used as a medication to treat high blood glucose. This includes in diabetes mellitus type 1, diabetes mellitus type 2, gestational diabetes, and complications of diabetes such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic states. It is also used along with glucose to treat high blood potassium levels. Typically it is given by injection under the skin, but some forms may also be used by injection into a vein or muscle. The common side effect is low blood sugar. Other side effects may include pain or skin changes at the sites of injection, low blood potassium, and allergic reactions. Use during pregnancy is relatively safe for the baby. Insulin can be made from the pancreas of pigs or cows. Human versions can be made either by modifying pig versions or recombinant technology. It comes in three main types: short-acting (such as regular insulin), intermediate-acting (such as NPH insulin), and longer-acting (such as insulin glargine). Insulin was first used as a medication in Canada by Charles Best and Frederick Banting in 1922. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system. The wholesale cost in the developing world is about US$2.39 to $10.61 per 1,000 iu (34.7 mg) of regular insulin and $2.23 to $10.35 per 1,000 iu of NPH insulin. In the United Kingdom 1,000 iu of regular or NPH insulin costs the NHS £7.48, while this amount of insulin glargine costs £30.68.

@@undeadwaluwugi758 I don't have diabetes, I just stopped as a preventive measure
@@cinders8144 what you meant is not what you said. Unless of course you were more willing to get type 2 if insulin was cheaper. The way you phrased it was poor, but I'm glad you told us what you actually meant.
Type one is not caused by sugar you are born with it it cant go away
I live in Canada and some people in my family have diabetes and I have never heard them complaining about the price, it cost like any other medicine and the insurance pay for it. But some people in the country next to us are literally dying because they can’t have it for a reasonable price. I wish US pharmacist could change their ways of thinking at least for that matter. (Sorry my English is not great, I’m from Quebec)
Glad to hear things are going well on your side of the river. It gives me hope. And your english is good, don't worry about it.
I'm glad I live in Australia as a diabetic, test trips cost $1aud, insulin is around $5 and pump supplies are $20 a box. So much more affordable than the US
I have no words. 😭😭
I'm type 1 diabetic and would be homeless if I wasn't a Canadian. They charge so much because they know you can't go without it.
Medicare 4 all
Do you know there are multiple proposals on the hill? Everything from completely free Bernie healthcare to government managed health insurance? Most of these proposals have no research about quality, access, or cost
42SVB no research? I’d assume that nearly every developed nation having it is plenty of research. It doesn’t cost more than our current system anyways.
Medicare patients have the exact problem with pricing and the cost of a vial is over 100.00 each. Medicare is not the solution, the solution is to demand we stop being the highest paying nation for medications.
I’m so grateful to be Canadian
Free health care
And people wonder why I hold so much hate and anger for my country ...
Leave. We dont fucking want your kind here. Go live somewhere with no sewers and clean drinkable water and see how much your ass appreciated it after you catch hepatitis.
I have type one diabetes as well. Fortunately, I don’t have to go through these struggles. But seeing other people like me that don’t have it as good as me brings me to tears.
And the FDA *still* won't sanction import medications...
People talk about universal healthcare but not things that actually matter, like medication costs.
As a British person with the NHS, this is utterly baffling how people are literally dying because of people's greed.
80s and 90s: hey you wanna buy sum crack?
Now: hey you wanna buy sum insulin?
This is why we need Medicare for all, because of situations like this.
What solution is in place for when insurance providers refuse to service the U.S. under a Medicare for All plan? I have not seen this topic discussed yet.
Vidchemy you act like the US government can’t get enough Americans to sign up on a cheaper better insurance. And you expect drug companies to not take the insurance of the biggest drug market in the world.
Artio the Artist too expensive. A Medicare for all plan is estimated to cost 32 trillion dollars(2x US GDP). It's about taking the pharmaceutical industry before giving everyone government assistance.
@@sleeper6736 the us is the only country in which the private sector holds more than half of the insurance market. And that alone is the reason why socialized healthcare will bomb and that primarily thanks to politicians happy to lobby for those companies while getting a fat check for it.
Mad King people will do what they want for cash. But there are those few who either refuse to make profit in dumb ways or use the profit they got legitimately to fix social problems.
Just a tip from a nurse ☺️ - utilize company’s like good RX. I single vial of generic humalog would cost about $68 using the app. Also look into manufacturer rebates/ coupons for these products. I know Humalog for example, offers assistance to low income family’s. Even if you don’t meet the low income threshold, they offer copay assistance coupons if you can’t afford the exorbitant price. In some cases brining the out of pocket cost down to $25. I know it sucks that it has to be done at all, but you have to do what you have to do. Hope it helps someone
Capitalism at its finest my friends
Gravity Zero EXACTLY!!!! Sad but true
Too bad it's actually the lack thereof.
Gravity Zero Pharmaceutical companies get their power from the government. Do you honestly think that this is problem results from capitalism? Reduce barriers for insulin producers and watch the price drop like a rock. Government, drug companies and insurance companies collude to absolutely fuck the consumer. That’s not capitalism, that’s corporatism and government monopoly.
If capitalism didn't exist, insulin would have never existed in the first place. No profit=no incentive to make things better for people.
Tyler Wiley
So, you applaud this mistreatment of people with a life-ruining diasese? Christ man...
The cost for me to attend a private school is at least half the cost to maintain my type one diabetes. My sophomore year of high school costed over $7,000, my parents happen to have really good insurance that covers the $15,000+ cost of my insulin, pump supplies, and test strips for a whole year.
And then giving insulin is illegal LOL freaking America
Even though I might not have diabetes, moving to Canada seems like a really good goal right now.
The title is missing "in America".
My aunt recently died, since she didn’t have insulin. It was heartbreaking. Writing this makes me want to cry actually. I miss her. And all because someone in hire power wanted to be selfish.
Diabetes runs in my family so if I lived in the states, I’d be absolutely screwed. Asthma is also ridiculously expensive.
WTF!?
Here in Malaysia it costs RM5 (about $1.50) for 8 insulin pens. A months supply of Metformin is RM1 (less than $0.25).
And we are a third world country.
Hahaha. Malaysian pharmacist here. In gov hospital yes try in private and retail pharmacy.
Weird that the price doubled right during the time that the government was taking in hand healthcare
I feel so incredibly lucky to live in the UK, I have numerous friends with type 1 diabetes and the thought of them having to struggle that much astounds me. They get their pumps and insulin for free on the NHS.
So doing the right thing is technically illegal?
That's the way it is going something right a big fat jail sentence.
@@1985toyotacamry People have been arrested for feeding the homeless because it voilates some cities "health codes" or something, the government is probably going to crack down on sharing Insulin; presumably because of lobbying from big pharma.
Colorado has capped the price of insulin at $100 for a month's supply. Other states need to follow suite.
Some things that should never be privatized. Health Care, Education, infrastructure. Plain and simple.
Because the government has proven itself to be so trustworthy.
Yours maybe, the fact that there are no checks and balances anymore speak volumes. Corporations get away with murder and no one will stop them🤔
I live in the UK. My best friend has had type 1 diabetes since she was young. It is such a difficult condition to have, takes so much control and constant maintenance. It makes me sick that, on top of that, diabetics in America have to fear for their life every day. It's disgusting.
Soo lucky that Australia has been called the Lucky country.
We have a Pharmacy act that reduces the cost of certain drug, so long as they have the right prescription script, etc.
N we have Medicare in which for medical cost in which gets care for all, as which u pay 10% of it out of ur tax.
Fellow Americans, the right to health care is a basic human right, not a privilege.
It's a net positive to society, not cost.
Think about it. I am a a type 1 diabetic in Britain, and I pay roughly £0.00 for my health care.
I also contribute over £40K in income tax every year now because I'm currently healthy and have a good job.
I've been diabetic since I was 16 and there was a time when I had no income, but during that time I still received great health care, and was able to lead a normal life.
@6:35. Yea, only if the prices don’t go up more by then. This is sad and disgusting how they playing with people life’s like that.
THIS ISSUE IS REAL!!!! The fact that it’s not being talked about is blasphemous and it’s killing those living with t1d. As a type 1 diabetic woman in college, I should be having the time of my life, living out these years to my fullest, but it looks over my head every day that if I do not end up with a job in corporate America by the time I’m 26, I will face these same struggles.Thank you so much for bringing the slightest bit of attention to such a dire problem.
This is one of many reasons why I want to leave US
Aren't there hospitals that have pharmacy's that give extremely cheap medications?
I have type 1 diabetes and it is hard to live because sometimes I can’t get my insulin right at the moment and don’t worry I have it right now and not really any struggles to get it but it breaks my heart people can’t get the insulin and unfortunately die my mom worries for me but In Jesus name I will be okay. I pray for other people too who can’t get what they need.
My heart breaks at this
This is a crisis formed by the government, to slowly kill off people...
This is huge problem. I pray for all of these people. And I count my blessings everyday that I am healthy.
I'm so grateful that in my country insulin is free...don't need to pay for any insurance..
"Your money or your life" is the motto of American healthcare. The insulin cartel is only one instance.
I find this is the case for many drugs, my mom has multiple auto immune diseases and the only treatment we found to work is a type of infusion. We have great insurance and we still had to pay 25 k in a month. We have to pay at least 5k a month for the first six months then insurance will cover fully. If we didn’t have insurance it would cost 150k an infusion and she does it twice a month. My dad is also type 1 diabetic and has heart Disease, thank god for insurance
This is criminal. LIfe saving medication is being priced out of the market to keep profits high for the drug companies. This should not be allowed. We pay for that research.
I am a pharmacist in Europe. But watching this devastates me...

My closest friend has diabetes if we were in America idk what we would do.
I love her so much, I’m gonna give my kidney to her when she needs it.

My two best friends and I are both diabetic and we think about this all the time. I’ve been diabetic for almost 8 years and I’ve been in DKA and it’s horrible. It’s a day to day struggle even when I have meds so not having them is awful.
We NEED universal healthcare NOW!
I have been type II for 40 years. Insulin dependant 4 shots a day for 25.
Went low carb ketogenic diet 20 grams of total carbs a day maximum. Off insulin in a week. Have not had any insulin shots for over 5 years now. No lows to worry about. Numerous other health improvements including losing 100 pounds.
Type I have to have insulin. But much much less when cutting out the carbs.
Turned my health life around.
To be frank this is barbaric. How can America even call itself a developed nation with such barbaric systems.
My bf has cystic fibrosis and his medication retail price is $34,000 for ONE months worth or medication. Insurance makes it $10 after the deductible.....which he meets after his first refill at the beginning of the year. It's crazy to think about though......

The US pharmaceutical industry and insurance industry are broken

As a 14 year old it’s so sad that i have to think of the future and how I’m going to pay for my diabetes once I’m off my parents insurance . Me and my family are working on getting me, my other diabetic brother and the rest of my family dual citizenship to Canada and the US just Incase of an emergency. It’s crazy to think that these companies care more about money then humans. I hope i will never have to move to Canada and this problem can be fixed, but for now every diabetic can’t be just hoping things will get better. There is a chance nothing will ever change and the prices will just keep rising.
Not necessary, you don't have to be a citizen to buy insulin in Canada, just come on up and get it.
If I have extra insulin,(Not saying that I have) Where can I give them out?
Emperor Yongle join some Facebook groups with diabetics near you and donate it if you don’t need it for that month you’d be saving lives
My mother’s side of the family is diabetic and I also have a hormonal problem that carries a risk of diabetes so the odds were never in my favor and now my dad has diabetes. This is scary I don’t ever want to be in the position to have to do risky things for life saving drugs.
Glad I’m blessed to not be an American 😬

How would that change anything?
This is so ridiculous to me. At this point, shouldn't we consider the USA a third world country with a big military?
Let's be honest. We have the world a worse health care system
I'll call this out for what it is: CAPITALISM
As a type 1 living in Britain, this is incredibly disturbing. To think that people are dying because of a treatable, albeit not curable, illness.
