    Most people don't understand the grey man concept. You take a base line of your environment and blend into that. If you are at Wall Street, then the grey man is wearing a suit and not sticking out. If you are in the country, then blue jeans and flannel and baseball cap.
    You eliminate any identifying markers while dressing like the people around you.

      This useage is valid, and its certainly how the term has come to be used, and illustrates a useful concept. The *phrase* "Grey Man" came from people doing SF selection or other "hard" courses where the Directing Staff could punish you or your training cadre by giving you extra tasks or training evolutions to do.
      The idea is to not stick out among the other trainees by asking lots of stupid questions or screwing up in some visible way, nor by busting gut trying to be first the whole time (as this inclined the directing staff to give you some problems so they saw how you and your crew handled things when they were going badly - overall making your day harder).
      The idea that its about blending in to crowds... it's not something military even really do (cool tho it is in movies), Geneva convention and all that means military have to be in uniform.

    I feel like more than "dressing like a banker", greyman techwear is about having all the techwear functionality while fitting into the environment. So, even other street wear essentials like jeans and hoodies can be greyman techwear if they hide some cool features.
    It's really about dressing for your own enjoyment and appreciation. "They don't know my hoodie is goretex", etc...

  • @againstthemodernworld3253
    @againstthemodernworld3253 5 лет назад +5

    You hit some good points. I'd also add- the best greyman gear probably comes from Goodwill/thrift store, Target (esp the C9 brand) and Walmart. You want to be generic and low key as possible- don't look too sharp, and don't look like a bum. People shouldn't be able to tell if you're an executive/cubicle dweller or a janitor...because you could be either one. So wear grey Dickies or 'Dockers" pants with a dark or grey, collared button front 'sport shirt' type shirt. Wear some generic walmart tennis shoes in a dark color and you can blend in just about anywhere. The Wrangler brand is a good choice. And they also have a line of techish outdoor clothes.
    I have to say- that Arc-teryx jacket was 1) UGLY AF and 2) Way too 'greyman" and generic. That alone made it stand out.
    For a backpack, Jansport in a non tactical color is probably about the safest bet.
    With backpacks, it the size, the color and the high quality construction. When you know what to look for, they really start to stand out. I've noticed a Maxpedition pack 200 yards away in a grocery store. Think about what you will carry n the pack before you buy one. Do you have a lot of electronics and chargers and cables etc?? or do you have a ton of small EDC stuff you need quik acess to??
    Don't forget too check with some of the camping/outdoor online retailers like Sierra trading or Campmor. You probably want something 25L or under to stay low key. You an also add sheets of plastic- like cheap cutting boards or real estate/campaign signs inside the pack to act as an heap, effective DIY stiffener-almost like an internal frame.
    heley hanson has well made rain gear and some of their lines are pretty affordable.
    One last thought- when buy your greyman gear from a used clothing store like Goodwill, there's an added bonus of you're picking only from things that other people have preselected- so it's less likely to reflect YOUR tastes and style.

    • @ThisIsAntwon
      @ThisIsAntwon  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for that, good brand suggestions! The idea of not reflecting your own taste is interesting too; that's really taking the greyman concept a stage past the aesthetic and into the lifestyle

      @@ThisIsAntwon Thanks, I was trying to think of a modern equivalent for Ritchie Cunningham. (apologies if none of these terms are familiar to our Euro buddies).

    Search for "travel" jackets and pants. They often have features like DWR, 4-way stretch, hidden pockets, quick drying times, and anti-microbial features, but look like "normal" clothes. No cargo pockets, dangly bits, ostentatious branding, etc. Or athleisure and outdoor brands. (Western Rise, Bluffworks, Futureworks, Kuhl, Lululemon)

  • @Jedwoods
    @Jedwoods 6 лет назад +1

    brands like Swrve and Western Rise (and possibly Howies), are doing this kind of subtle technical performance with their materials but very unassuming styles. I'd recommend Evergoods (particularly the CPL24) as a backpack that hits this mark. Goruck are worth a look but imo are still too tactical looking.

    Lame.
    First and foremost - greyman was built to allow operator blend in the crowd (think undercover agent protecting flights or trains from terrorist attack).
    And they rarely look like young, wimpy boys who tip the scales at 60kg or so.
    So greymen wear the same clothes as normies in given area - t-shirts (bit baggy to hide their musculature and CCW), jeans and plain sneakers.
    So the only good advice in the video were those adidas sneakers with gore-tex.
    BTW:
    Why not buy REAL greyman clothing?
    Like instead of shitty sneakers go for Palladium, Haix Black Eagle, or Garmont Tactical?
    You want cheap, stealthy pants and jacket? Helikon-tex Woodsman, or Greyman models.
    Backpack or bag? Timbuk2, Osprey, Gregory, Thule.
