- I wasn't sure how this one was going to turn out because there wasn't much pattern showing on it. The Petoskey Stone is the fossilized coral hexgonaria. It's also Michigan's state stone.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I didn't know those are fossilized coral. Beautiful rocks.
There are many different kinds of fossilized corals.
@@MichiganRocks Corals in the Great Lakes? Whodathunkit?
@@pcmacd This coral is around 350 million years old. At that time, this was a shallow sea, not a lake.
@@pcmacdThat's why there's a massive salt deposit underneath the Great lakes. Oceans have formed and disappeared many times over hundreds of millions of years. The Great lakes aren't even 20,000 years old
Sweet! That's the area I grew up in. Some of my most exciting memories are from going out looking for stones between Petoskey and Charlevoix
That is a beautiful area.
Lived in Boyne City when I was a kid
Really miss the Ironton Ferry
Beautiful stone. God's creation !
Das ist Heimatt 😘 hier gibt es auch ähnliche Dinge ,super schön 🤸 Wiener Becken, ca. 15 Millio.Jahre ❤🇦🇹
@MichiganRocks I hate being colorblind I had no idea what I was looking for at that beautiful stone I didn't notice it until the very end, but definitely a beautiful rock!!! Great work, videos & channel man!!! Keep up the great work I definitely won't miss a video now that I found your channel, how much does a beautiful stone like that go for? My favorite color is lime green, are any of those potaski stones a similar color like bright lime green? If so any recommendations were i should check out any for sale, or do you sell any of your stones at your own shop, or website or something? Either way keep up the great work & channel man you're videos are entertaining, useful, & makes me want to look for my own stones around I live, it definitely looks like a fun hobby, so your your channel/videos are also inspiring to the point were I'd like to take on the same hobby, I know there's tons of agate's, amethyst, & tons of different colored quarts, pink, clear, milky white, green, & tons of other common, average, & rare colored quarts, & plenty of others, but I don't want to just use a rock tumbler, I would much rather use the type of grinder you have, but I don't know how much they cost new or used, or good or bad brands for grinders if you have any advice for a newbie life me lol, I've found Agates & stuff but nothing more than picking up the rare rock if they just happen to be close to were I'm walking driving or whatever but I never really spent more than 15-30minutes looking for different rocks, stones, minerals plus just using a rock tumbler just isn't the same as the way you do it sounds much more fun, I'm definitely inspired on taking on this hobby but I would love to learn some tips & tricks if anyone is interested in helping me out a little? It would be greatly appreciated!!!:)
That was a surprise 😮 polish reveal. Details are stunning.
🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
Rocks tell so many incredible stories. You just have to know how to unlock those stories!! Thank you for unlocking one more!
I've been listening to the same one for a week. Still not a peep. 😔
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Beautiful shine!
I think I’ve seen one of your comments before because I remember that distinctive opening line!
Wow. Your ability to spot these is just amazing
That one was a little harder to see, but most are pretty easy to spot. I have had a lot of practice. Now if I could only improve my agate hunting abilities!
You made a chunk of coal into a diamond. The upclose detail is outstanding
noooo….clearly he *Polished* a petoskey stone into a *shiny petoskey stone….😉*
I have never heard of these! You brought out such beauty! Thanks for sharing❤
I NEVER would have guessed that rock would turn out being what it is. Beautiful!
Wow, from this not looking like much, to that beauty!
Very impressive 👏
Oh my gosh!! 😮 What a beautiful, STUNNING stone. ASTOUNDING ❤
All Petoskeys are beautiful. Thanks Rob.✌️
Good eye... nicely done...I have a couple I picked up..while walking the shoreline... beautiful area.
If these are famous in this area, how old are they supposed to be? What is the story of history concerning them?
@@MegaSkills9 they are fossils..and and no two are alike ..so they go back to the earths formation.
I never thought it could come out so nice❤
You have to take that leap of faith sometimes! Absolutely beautiful 💕
I figured there'd be something under there, but I wasn't sure how good it would be. This is not a great Petoskey stone, but it was fun to see something as good as this, given that nothing was showing before I started grinding.
You’d bring it home anyways 😂
Your videos make my day! I'm in Oregon and they're definitely no petoskey here. I have to live vicariously through you.
You have some other good stuff though, like obsidian for example. None of that here.
I'm still looking for one of these!😍
I'm in Utah, which might be the problem. Sure is pretty.✌️💞
Yeah, that's not something you're going to find there.
I used to hunt these stones every summer with my grandma who lived in harbor springs. Never polished em with wheels but used clear nail polish to coat wet stones and looks very similar.
Yep. I remember doing that.
Woah 😳 it polished up beautifully, I love polished rocks 😍
It's amazing what you can do with Petoskey stones! Great job! 😊
Thats incredibly pretty! My wife doesn't get my fascination with rocks
My wife gets my fascination, but she has absolutely no interest in doing any lapidary work. Fortunately, she doesn't complain about the noise coming from the basement.
Have you made your wife any jewelry? That might help.
@@MichiganRocks have you made jewelry for your wife and if so can you show us? My favorite jewelry are my stones and shells.
@@isabellanebel8491 Yes, I have made jewelry for her. I just put a couple pendants and some beads in a new channel welcome video. It's a quick shot, but that's the easiest video for me to show you. ruclips.net/video/u4FgTqc9tf0/видео.html
How could you even tell it was when you found it!? Fantastic turnout!
I saw the pattern on the back. If it had been turned over I wouldn't have given it a second look.
Looked like nothing, but you made it into a gem!❤
The back looked like something.
You brought out some amazing details!
Ill be looking at rocks differently now!
Ima Floridian and remember going to Michigan tip up town w my family as a kid I’ll never forget the potaski stone as a kid
Where was tip up town? I think Tawas used to have one.
Houghton lake @@MichiganRocks
@@markclairmont3391 Ok, different one then.
I think these are my favorite rocks! Just spectacular detail with the delicate design!
They're one of my favorites too.
I never get tired of seeing the beautiful markings in the rocks that are scattered under our feet, in rivers, oceans, forests and on the highest mountains.
I love finding beautiful rocks for my versus collections ❤️🪨
I'm heading that way soon and hope to find a few for myself.
Good luck!
@@MichiganRocks Thank you!
Have a blast! If you are looking for more that Petoskey stones check out the beach at the old light house in prsque isle!
@@melindaestridge4167 Thank you. I appreciate the information.
@@melindaestridge4167 The lighthouses there are great, but the rock hunting there is not.
One of my favorite places on earth
im from there
Is your dad's name Kelly?
Love to see this, rock hounding around petoskey is so much fun!
Yes it is.
also love to hunt in petoskey
Absolutely gorgeous!
Breathtaking
Wow!😮 I would have never thought you got that out of that stone
The water and result are awesome Rob!
Thanks, Cindy!
That turned out better than I would have expected based on some of your other videos!
I wasn't sure what to expect. The back sure looked like it showed some potential.
Holy crap that's awesome! I love videos like this. I follow a guy on TT that takes bottles and turns them into glasses, it's a really cool thing to watch!
I assume you mean drinking glasses, but the first thing I thought of was "Coke bottle glasses".
Beautiful! What an amazing talent you have! ❤
before and after is stunning
I love your channnel this is so wholesome and wonderful to watch
Thank you.
Beautiful stone! I have so many memories on the beach with my sister digging for those.
My son and I collect rocks every summer. He’s now in the 4-5th grade. He showed me your clips. Impressive sir.
Thanks!
Wow! So pretty!
Gorgeously done! I was in Alpena, Mi and was told that it's rare to find a Petoskey stone. Our first day at the local beach I tripped over one the size of a bread box. I don't hunt fossils; they hunt me!
Whoever told you that, doesn't know what they're talking about. There are lots of them around. I could go out right now and fill a bucket with them if I wasn't overly concerned about the quality.
It was my ex boyfriend and I'm 99.9% sure he just didn't want to go fossil hunting. I found loads of them while I was in Alpena; Brachiopods too! I miss that area.
@@melindaestridge4167 Lots of fossils in general here.
I was not expecting that… so beautiful!
I gotta say, I was not expecting that beautiful result! Nice job!!!
Wow! Beautiful polish reveal!
Wooow, stones are really undiscovered gems!
Beautiful and well done
You rock nerds never cease to impress. Cheers.
That’s beautiful!
Wow! I’m in New Jersey near Philly & I never knew about those. Really cool looking! I’d hunt for them too if I was there 🤩😎💖
I'm not sure how close to you it is, but there's a place in New Jersey that has lots of fluorescent rocks.
@@MichiganRocks thanks! Would you happen to have the name of a town or maybe something else to identify if it’s north , mid or south Jersey. Believe it or not I’m so far south that Delaware is only 15 minutes away & north Jersey is more than 3 hours away. It’s a small state but not really. 😊😍 I’d definitely look into any details you could provide. Much appreciated! & keep up the great work! Each one is unique, beautiful! 💖😍

I remember going petosky hunting with my grandparents in Charlevoix😢 making me homesick, and fuzzy warm at same time. ❤
I can see there being mixed emotions with that memory.
I have some Petoskey stones, I used to live in Michigan and would visit Petoskey on our way to our cabin.
We like to stop by there occasionally too.
🇬🇧 I had no idea what a petosky stone was but have now found out! Wonderful, many thanks for showing the process.
Glad you enjoyed it!
WOW!!! I'll share with my Wisconsin family. Its suoer beautiful to me!!!!!! ❤
Gorgeous! What a surprising reveal! ❤
Brings back memories when I went rock hunting at Manistee MI. Found many a Petoskey stone.
Wow, that's a really beautiful fossil, I love the designs and polish❤❤❤
Fossil corals, beautiful find 🤩💝💞💖💕💝
You were in my town that’s awesome ! Petoskey is a beautiful town
Yes, Petoskey is really nice. My wife and I enjoy driving around that area on the east side of town with all the old cottages. It's an area associated with a church. I don't know what it's called, but it's beautiful in there.
@@MichiganRocks bay view is the name of a little town but still in petoskey ….. I love this town I’m happy that I moved up here back in 2003
MY TOWN TOO
It's absolutely incredible how they change ! They say that no rock is just a rock
They're all unique.
Wow that's pretty cool
wow!!!!! like some people you meet a stranger, get talking and you find the beauty hidden beneath...
Wow that turned out gorgeous ❤
Wow! That's beautiful! ❤
That turned out beautiful.❤️🔥
That's absolutely stunning! My husband and my kids and I rockhunt all of the time and polish some as well. Just not to this amazing extent!
Wow, really nice job! Looks really good!❤
Rob, that really surprised me, bc I didn't expect any detail to emerge at all. Nice job! Thank u for showing that. Hello to Nancy, Sam & Sally.
I wasn't sure what I would get, but I suspected I'd find some pattern in there. I chose this one for the surprise factor just in case it turned out.
That is really beautiful.
Im Joe Petoskey and I approve of this video.
Wow looks beautiful got a great eye for looking for them 😊😊😊😊
They're not usually too hard to spot.
I'm in Petosky right now (well, Bay View) and I wouldn't have picked that one up - really nice find after you cleaned it up. You've got skills!
It wasn't a great rock, but I figured if it polished at all it would make a good video. It turned out better than I expected.
Holy cow that's amazing. And nice set up too geezuz
The pattern on it looks really cool. It looked like a sea enemy. Nice pattern.
It's actually a fossilized coral.
Anemone (I remember the spelling by thinking an e mone.)
I am now a believer. You got some eye, Sir!!!
😮 WOW! That's really pretty
My then husband rescued a couple from Michigan whose vehicle broke down in west Texas. Wouldn't take any money for his trouble so they sent him a jar full of these polished stones. They are beautiful! (the stones and the people)
That's a great way to say thanks.
WOW NICE I DIDNT KNOW SEE YOU LEARN SOMETHING EVERY DAY❤😊
It’s beautiful.. when I was a kid I remember Lake Michigan Beach in WI have not so much ammonite,(am sure there are some) but tons of rocks with fish fossils all over them. TY for Sharing neighbor🐚
There aren't many ammonites here, either. I have never found one, but I believe there are some here, based on what I have read. We do find gastropods, which look similar. The rock in this video is a fossilized coral.
That's amazing I have never heard of these it's beautiful
I live in harbor springs love seeing videos of my area
Do you find Petoskey stones in Harbor Springs? From what I understand and my limited experience hunting them there, I think you're too far north, even though you're very close to Petoskey.
Looks amazing Rob ...
Thanks, Rosie.
Wow, that is a beautiful stone.
Those are gorgeous stones!!!
You make it look sooooo easy!
That's because it is easy. You just rub the rock around and be careful not to miss any spots. If you dry the rock off between wheels, it's really easy to see if you did miss a spot.
Omg! Gorgeous stone/ fossil.
I am from Chicago and I am sitting in Petoskey today watching the video
Now you're going to want to get out to find one for yourself!
Gorgeous!!!
I just came back from a vacation in Elk Rapids and collected a TON of these!
They're fun to find, aren't they?
Good job
Stunning rock. Cool find. 🤩
Spent my summers searching for these on Glen Arbor as a kid. My wife and I had our first anniversary back up there, have a glass jar filled with them!l from that trip. She inherited the addiction to finding them! Hahaha
It's pretty contagious.
Just amazingly gorgeous
Beautiful 😍🏴
Love it i keep going to lakeport day use to hunt for stone. Thanks for the tip
I've been there. I have found Petoskeys and puddingstones. Nice place.
Wow!!! Thank you! 🤗
