these are among the best, most comprehensive cycling gear reviews i've watched. good job mate, nice to see someone putting k's on gear rather than just upgrading shit
You are an organic reviewer which I like you most among youtubers, not being manipulated nor influenced by greedy sponsors like GNC. Job well done...we are waiting for more honest & good product reviews...
+George Araneta hey, that's very nice of you to say. I just make videos that I would want to see if I was going to spend lots of money on cycling gear but didn't know how good the product was.
I think your reviews have a certain "style" ie. say it like it is, no BS and diss design when necessary that make them well worth watching! I think I went overboard with the wheel vid
I use a Protone myself, and put a lot of miles both on it and its predecessor the Vertigo. The Protone is truly excellent, though there are 2 really little nit picks. First is that it doesn't have MIPS yet. The other is that the Vertigo happened to have a couple of spots on the rear cinch strap where you could attach a clip-style taillight for city riding to get the light up higher. I also have a Bontrager Ballista semi aero helmet with MIPS and it might be slightly more comfortable than the Protone except of course nobody matches the Kask synth-leather strap. I don't know if you race TT, but just a couple of days ago I replaced my old Bell TT helmet (that made me feel like I was inside of an echo-y garbage can) with the Kask Bambino Pro but haven't ridden it yet, just tried it on. Feels just like a TT-ish Protone. Read some mixed reviews but I like it. Even the carrying case is really neat.
shonanmike cheers mate. Not just me then! I spend a fair bit of my life sneering at headphones that are not Sennheiser HD800s so am fairly sensitive to audio shifts, so thought I might have been thinking about it a bit too closely.
Have the exact same helmet and like it a lot. The big thing for me is it's not gigantic on your head. It seems to have a slim profile while looking good. Luckily havent had the issues with the stick on rubber pieces. My big problem with it is that skull retainer seems too easy to adjust on the ratchet. What I mean is that I have to play with the adjustment every time I put the helmet on because it doesn't take very much to adjust the angle of it. I always have to make sure the thin plastic part that sticks out (eyeglass arm holes), is actually outside of the helmet, and not tucked between the helmet and my head. Sounds like a big deal, but it isn't. Just takes a bit of explaining... overall love the helmet as well!
agree! hd one with similar issue and similar good experience, and i don't even think twice when ordering new one right after i crashed the 1st one... its good
+K Smythe yeah, pull the whole cage at the back right down so it sits fully under your skull at the back. This will put the glasses ear part shaping section into the right position.
I'm on my second Protone. The first one lasted 18 months until I had a bad crash and smacked the back of the helmet on the road very hard. The helmet broke and my head did not. Kask also have a 50% crash replacement service which is brilliant IMO.
Excellent review. Those plastic bits are questionable but looks like they held up except the pop offs. Is there extra safety for that extra high price? say from a 150 dollar helmet?
I have to disagree with your comment regarding the front pads. It does indeed soak up sweat and starts dripping once the front pads are unable to hold anymore sweat. A word of warming for those who sweat tremendously like I do on hot summer days.
Oh, what I really wanted to ask was for you to elaborate a bit on the wind noise and that effect of the helmet not getting "stuck" as much as the Mojito. I do know that feeling, especially when you turn your head to the side and then it has a bit of resistance turning it back to the front. I had a cheap Giro helmet which was extremely noisy and drove me nuts, so then I bought a Mojito (which I have now) and that's been a lot better but its still a bit noisy to the point where you don't always hear a car until its right next to you. I was looking at a Protone or perhaps something else that is above all else quiet (relatively). The wind noise really only gets too loud above about 30-35km/h
Well, this is purely anecdotal, and I can't verify my claims, but I definitely feel the Protone is quieter than the Mojito and has less drag when turning my head, like you say. I don't notice it now, as I have used it exclusively for over a year now, but when I first got it, it felt overall 'lighter' when riding at speed, and felt more part of my head.
This may sound stupid but when I changed from a very noisy helmet to a much quieter one I did improve on my average speed during some training rides that I do routinely. Now I'm pretty new to cycling and perhaps there were other factors but just making that one change seemed to help go a little faster. Not sure how much I buy into aerodynamics but it does make sense that turbulence causes noise and having broken air around your head without a slipstream path could slow you down. Your head definitely sticks out (especially newer riders sitting more upright) so I do believe somewhat in aero helmets helping with speed especially quiet ones
I don't think changing a helmet is going to add significantly to your speed; aerodynamics is definitely a real thing of course, and after power output and overall fitness / weight, it is the next deciding factor in how fast you go, but the real gains come from the cumulative effect of getting a load of different things aero. The biggest aero advantage you will ever give yourself, is a lower body position on the bike. After that, the rest is just fine tuning :) A more aero helmet certainly has an effect, but it won't add 5km/h to your average speed. Unless it makes you so happy that you go out and ride like a maniac, from the sheer joy of having a nice new helmet to show off.
As a color for the protone. I've order the matte black one today and I'm excited about it:) the glossy one is also nice. I've matte frame and I think a matte black protone would be awesome
I would like to know your opinion about colors and temperature, especially in summer. Do you think is there any difference using black or white? I like the black and I don't know which one I should buy. In my country every summer is like being in hell (hot and humit like in Japan). I've ridden many different opinions about this topic. Anyway, greetings from Spain. Thank You! :)
+Sebastià Gayà Hello in Spain! Yeah I have worn black in really hot temperatures and I don't think it makes a huge difference. The material itself is way more important.
It's not impossible to comment on. Especially whether or not the mojito feels to be sized differently than the protone. I measure 58cm, my kask mojito is a medium and fits tightly. IMO that's pretty important information I'd include if I was reviewing a helmet. Size charts do exists for a reason and are a pretty good indicator...

That is very nice of you to say so! I'll carry on then!
I love these product long term reviews. It's nice to see how well items hold up and what requires maintenance. Another great honest video. Thanx
Cheers mate. That is the aim; show how things actually handle real life use. The advertising and first impression reviews never address this.
Wouldn't think it would be hard to review a helmet but no one has made such a comprehensive one as you, so thanks, awaiting my protone to be delivered
Brilliant honest review, definitely going to buy one of these after watching this 👍🏻
Awesome and unbiased reviews. As real as they get I believe. Keep em coming!
Martin Lozano thanks mate! Yeah I have loads more stuff to review, so will keep uploading for sure. :)

great review, never heard of anyone showering with a helmet though! i'll give it a go
July 2015 for mine, so probably about 25 000km too, and still perfect! Best helmet out there, and yes there are definitely aero watts to be had there.
Great review. Excellent as usual
Hambini Performance Engineering cheers! Just trying to keep up standards, after your aerodynamics mega-video!

Frigging excellent review. Noticed the same thing with the acoustics.

that was a phenomenal review. thank you.
+Christian Hammad Cheers mate :)

The glasses cut out on the retainer sold me. My mojito was very picky on glasses and looked like a duck perched on my head in comparison.
have you seeing this new kask helmet team sky have been useing lately. a good true honest review
Nice to hear from a guy who knows what's happening. Nice review, but I could've done without the two helmets in the shower detail.
Didn't know that about the glasses, always find my Oakley legs hit the foam that drops down behind your ears. Need to play around with this tonight.
+K Smythe yeah, pull the whole cage at the back right down so it sits fully under your skull at the back. This will put the glasses ear part shaping section into the right position.

+Wesley Manning didn't know about the crash replacement. Nice!
Mate, I'm gonna take my Kask to Japan as well, we're doing the Shimanami Kaido. Where did you ride?
really like my Rapido. Can't justify the cost of the Protone.
Mips tech interests me I wish kask had a helemt with mips inside it . But specialized have also ignored mips on the evade so maybe it's just hype
Wonderful review. Would like to ask though, how do you take care of the leather strap, i.e. prevent it from smelling bad?
Wash it after every ride!
Excellent review. Those plastic bits are questionable but looks like they held up except the pop offs. Is there extra safety for that extra high price? say from a 150 dollar helmet?
Yeah, I have super-glued them on, and they are holding alright, but as you say it is not ideal.
Extra safety? No, not at all.
Awesome review! But after 25000km ride...you'd probably want to replace it!
I have to disagree with your comment regarding the front pads. It does indeed soak up sweat and starts dripping once the front pads are unable to hold anymore sweat. A word of warming for those who sweat tremendously like I do on hot summer days.

But how many vents does it have? My new helmet has 400 vents so is best. Is also great for draining salads
what about pasta though?
Oh yeah 400 ha 😂
Yes those holes behind the front foam pad dont do anything & yet the foam dries out unlike the other Kask that doesn't have the holes collects sweat 🙄
hi, what do you think about the matt black colour :)
+Lion Of Paradise as a colour in general?
As a color for the protone. I've order the matte black one today and I'm excited about it:) the glossy one is also nice. I've matte frame and I think a matte black protone would be awesome

Head size/Helmet size????? Sizing compared to Mojito???? Nobody ever mentions sizing in these reviews, GRRRR
Because it is impossible to comment on. Everyone’s head is different and the only true way to know is to try it on.

This has low impact protection specially the front
Mate I haven't enjoyed a review as much as this for a long time, especially 4:00 when you gently and respectfully rip the shit out of vegans.
bitchoflivingblah haha cheers. Vegan twats.
Die Werbung von RUclips geht mir voll auf den Zeiger. Sind alle Geldgierig hier bei RUclips ? Muss das sein ?
I paid $18 for my chinese copy helmet. Am I worried about its' quality? Nah, I don't wear a helmet ;)
Is it just me or its a fake kask
