- How to convert a PDF to a Google Doc
STEPS:
1. Drag the PDF to your Google Drive
2. Right click on the file
3. Select "Open With"
4. Click on Google Docs
This method works great for text-based PDFs; however, the font style and formatting may change. Images will typically be stripped out using this process.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can't believe that teachers are so inconsiderate as to give homework for virtual students on a PDF and don't explain to them how to make it a google doc. These virtual kids weren't born with computer skills people. Thanks again from a frustrated mom. :)

Hi, I tried it with a pdf that has lots of tables and the information is unreadable after it's converted to google doc, any other software you know that can properly convert a more complex pdf into word doc? Thanks
Yes, but they may not be free. My other 2 preferred apps are Adobe Acrobat Pro or PDF-XChange.

I have the same problem
Try to OCR the PDF first and then export it as a word docx file, then import into Google Docs if you still need to convert it into Google docs at that point.
FacultyWorkshop I went pdf-> word-> google doc & the formatting is better but not 100%... what is OCR?
OCR is Optical character recognition, you basically tell Adobe to scan your PDF to recognize characters to make it searchable and more importantly as accurate as possible when exporting. Here's an example of how to do it: ruclips.net/video/AR_SqbcPucg/видео.html

I have done it but most of my contents are out of their place and it just looks ugly now.
My PDF has 127 pages and the Doc only 25, it does not convert the images. How can I get it to work properly?
You will most likely need to break it into multiple docs and then combine them. And yes, converting the images can be a problem. In fact, I find that sometimes the converted resolution of the images is poor. So What I have done is to convert text and then manually copied images over if I was not happy with the image resolution.

Run OCR on the PDF first to help improve character recognition before converting it to Google Docs.

Yes! I will release a video that shows you how to do that. It will be posted at 7PM (PST). There is a way to do this, but if you want to make the conversion in a manner that will allow you to edit the text-content in the Google Docs, you'll need remove non-convertible features.
Nice tutorial but when I opened the document, the formatting was changed around a bit and I couldn't correct it properly. I didn't have the OCR option.
If you've got Adobe that is a different version than mine, you may want to click on help and type in OCR there as your menu options may look different than mine's.

Make sure that you OCR the PDF to make sure that Google's able to read the text and convert it accurately. There is a possibility that the PDF that you are working with is flattened and not readable.
I have saved my Google doc as a PDF and uploaded it to Google Drive. I then uploaded the PDF to my iPhone and saved it in "Books." When I look at my Books library, the thumbnail of the PDF show up and the title next to it. But the author says, "Unknown Author." How do I add the author name to the PDF?
The easiest way that I have found to be able to edit the metadata for a PDF was with Notepad++. Just open the PDF or drag it and drop it into Notepad++ and edit the author name. Don't change anything else. Save and exit. Make sure that you first create a backup of the PDF before you try this. When you first open the modified PDF again in Adobe or some other PDF software, you may get an error message, but you should still be able to see and read the PDF. Simply save as a new file and that should take care of the error message. If it doesn't work, you will still have the original backup copy to revert back to.

Yes! Make sure the PDF is very legible without and writing or blemishes. Then have him run the OCR (Optical Character Reader) feature in Adobe. Then save and try again. It works best with fewer pages.

Unfortunately not. The conversion usually removes just about all formating, only the text remains. If you want to experiment. You can export the PDF to Word docx and see if that works. If it does, grad the word docx to Google to see if the conversion retains the borders or formatting from a Word file.

Edge has taken over my puter. I am a devoted Google Chrome user. How do I get rid of this edge?
At the bottom left of your screen, in Windows search, type default programs. then click on default programs and you can change which software is your default web browser. So if you prefer a Chrome or Firefox you can select that instead of Edge.

This is also how you copy and paste all of the text in pdf documents.
If you try to do that in the pdf, copy and paste functions just copy and paste whatever and never actually copy the whole thing. Weird

You need to ensure that the PDF starts off on your computer, then you should be able to drag it and drop it into your Google drive. If your experiencing problems with Safari, opening your PDF, try switching your browser to Chrome.

When I drag the pdf to the window it just opens the pdf file in Chrome.
I attempted to replicate the issue that you have and found that it happens if you drag the PDF directly into a Google Doc if that is what you are doing, you need to draf the PDF into the Google Drive, not a doc.

This only works when the pdf is only words, if it has tables etc... it does not work.
Yes, as mentioned in the video. Formating will be lost. An alternative would be to export the PDF to Microsoft Word. That may have a better chance of retaining tables or other formatting that you may have on your document.
