    Starting to think overflow to reservoir is the best combo.
    What I have in mind is
    pond > small river > overflow into the reservoir's rock ridden mouth (reverse wet land) > pump to wetland filter slightly over the pond
    Plan getting clearer and clearer. Keep the vids coming Kev.
    Cheers.

    with your smaller ponds, you said the overflow just weeps out over the edge. is there a potential problem where the water over time travels under the liner to the base of the pond and builds up there? Does that even matter, I don't know? (I have heavy clay soil under my pond which doesn't drain much).

    • @DaveJonesAustralia
      @DaveJonesAustralia 2 года назад +1

      It does depend on soil types. I live a few hours away from OzPonds, and my pond is in a deep sandy soil. Overflow drains away quickly. In fact, our main house supply burst and there was no sign of any dampness on the surface; the water went straight down!

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 года назад +1

      I’ve seen contractors mention that it’s a potential problem but I could never work out why? If I get a ton of rain the water goes into the ground around the pond anyway. If there’s a solid surface like a concrete courtyard the water runs off and just dissipates into the ground. If there’s a low water table and it has the potential to cause hydrostatic pressure, well that’s different, but even then an overflow won’t solve that problem you’d need a drain or sump that can relive that pressure. Unlike Dave my soil is clay and Gippsland is very wet throughout winter, yet still no problems just letting the water spill out once the pond is full. So I dunno why people worry about it..,maybe in the tropics where they get monsoons? The only reason I added it on this pond is because I didn’t want to flood the basketball court and because I was connecting the top up. That has the potential to deliver a lot of water into the pond, so if I forget to flick the valve back to the stormwater there would be a lot of water spilling out of the pond and racing across the court. Now it will just return to the stormwater anyway.

    So, i had concerns about large amounts of water from very heavy rains getting under the liner and lifting it or eroding under the liner causing a cavity and thus the liner further sinking. It seems this is not a concern of yours and I should not worry. Regardless I might provide an overflow into an agi drain just for peace of mind.

    Hi Kev, love the pond/ bog filter content, and just wondered what your thoughts are on a bog filter that’s fed by a canister filter. I’ve just built a pond (only 500litres) with an above pond bog filter, and I use a canister filter as a pre-filter, that then feeds into the bog filter. I’ve just started to wonder though if the water coming out of the canister and into the bog won’t have enough oxygen in it. As in, will the canister filter have used up all the oxygen to the point where the water going into the bog is too low in oxygen to function properly? Was wondering about adding an air stone into the bog?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 года назад +2

      I think it should be alright. Like you said if you are worried you could add an air stone or create a bit of a Venturi in the pipe that feeds the bog. 👍

    What tools did you use if any for level? I imagine most standard builds might be a bit easier with big rocks to make up for anything not level but I'm using bricks not rocks around my edges. I'm just wondering what tools might help me find my level... one side of the pond is higher than the other by maybe 6-12inches. Do I level
    Everything first?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 года назад +1

      I just used a spirit level on a big stick and then for the final level the water set that one 😉. But like you said it’s easier with big rocks. I know David Pagan Butler uses two water bottles connected by a hose, I thought that was pretty cool. You could level everything first but if using bricks you’ll need to be constantly checking everything is good regardless.

    Good idea with the rainwater topup system, Could you say if soft sandstone will be any good for a pond? i was able to do a favour for a local farmer who has given and delivered me about four cubic meters of it and i can have more if i want, but it does turn water quite murky at first untill it`s washed several times (i tried a piece in a bowl).

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 года назад

      I don’t mind what type of rocks I use. I figure there’s aquatic life in all different environments and different rock types. But in saying that I’ve never used soft sandstone on my ponds, so I can’t offer any first hand experiences.
