Another great video. The quality of your water is just amazing Kev. No doubt, you should be calling yourself a professional at this point. I've seen companies who've screwed up ponds, to the point they've had to be rebuilt! Always enjoy your content. Thanks ❤

There certainly are too many “professionals” charging too much money out there. I’m glad you enjoy the content, I appreciate your support.

Yup, sump pump is the name here in North America, Michigan, USA. I've lived across the midwest and southwest and don't recall hearing a different name for these pumps. Here in Michigan, every basement must have one or risk flooding at some point. Thanks for the good info about drainage. I hadn't considered some of these points. I'll keep them in mind for the day when I build a BIG pond. Currently have a baby one 3'x5'x18".

Another great video. I'm not sure I've ever seen you make a video on how to handle the evaporation. What you do suggest if the water from the pond drops below the negative edge that goes to the three drum bog filter. I have a property in the high desert in Arizona that I'm planning on putting several large ponds around 50k -100k gallons. All DIY. We get big monsoons that will fill the ponds but also high winds and a lot of evaporation. I'm not sure how I would incorporate a bog filter in this scenario as the water would quickly drop below the negative edge that flows to the bog filter..I was thinking a bog filter at the bottom of the pond where the water flows to and pumps back to another bog filter at the top. Thank you.

With a negative edge style pond, the water level inside the pond remains constant, and it’s the water inside the intake reservoir that fluctuates. So if you have lots of evaporation you’re worried about, I’d suggest making the reservoir a bit larger to help compensate.

The pond you’re referring to with the 3 barrels, that’s an intake bay not a negative edge. The water in that pond can fluctuate quite a bit before I need to top it up. A negative edge has an underground reservoir, the water is kept at a constant level, like in my solar only pond. So the first thing you need to do is understand the different components and what will work best in your environment. A large reservoir will help capture the water on large rain events. I do have videos on skimmers, negative edges and intake bays and what the differences are. I also have plenty on different bog filter designs. I even have videos on evaporation and topping up the pond 👍 I hope they help you out.

Appreciate the response..I've more research to do then to understand the negative edge better. The way I'm viewing it is if the pond starts to drop, the out flow of the negative edge will drop below the edge and not cycle through the bog pumps. Maybe I need to just have a pump in a barrel deeper in the pond and bottom fed DIY caterpillar style bog filter at the top of the pond with water fall. Thank you again. Love your videos

thank you for all the videos and info by chance to you know much about adding snails to a pond and if its a good or bad idea?

I’ve never added them but I have them. They are just part of the ecosystem. I like ‘em 👍

@@Ozponds thanks for replying Oz really appreciate it. I added about 30 snails to one pond mixed variety and added 3 to another smaller pond. The snails seems to have disappeared from the 1st pond but have really been breading well in the smaller pond. Any ideas?

It’s almost always just a food thing. More food= more snails. Less food= less snails.

I think if I ever built a pond in the ground, it would be a nightmare. Sometimes we can get 4 or 5 inches of rain in just a couple hours. I drilled overflow holes in my container pond so I wouldn't have plants and fish washing over the sides.

That’s a good point in the tropics the amount of rain in short periods can be crazy! If I get 4 or 5 inches that occurs over a month. A big rain event here is 2-3 inches in a day.
