This is the finest performance I have ever heard of this titanic work. Thank you, Yves!

Great recording. This CD is in my collection from shortly after it was issued.

Very good - for a more up-to-date version, listen to Marco den Toom at the great Adema organ in the "other" St Bavo in Haarlem. The musicianship and standard of recording are superb.

Thanks for putting this on, it is such a fantastic recording of a truly virtuosic piece, YC gives a superb performance, and truly wonderful control of what is not an easy organ to play.

Castagnet was not one of the "Titulars" of Notre Dame, he was the organist of the Orgue du Choeur.

Heresy to suggest it, I know, but this is the wrong organ for this music. If M. Castagnet wanted the authentic Dupré sound, he should have gone to a certain temple of commerce in Philadelphia...

Indeed your comment is heresy, do not forget that Marcel Dupre knew this instrument so well, his father Albert was organist here

@@alastairbird9860 it isn't the only organ Dupré knew well. The Symphonie-Passion, Cortège et Litanies and other works were conceived on or for the Wanamaker organ, and it is there, not at S.Ouen, that you will find the authentic sound for those works.

I agree that an American instrument would be better for this Dupre sound. However, it’s exciting to hear it on the instrument on which Dupre premiered it!

I think you've confused this with the Symphonie-Passion, which did indeed begin life as an improvisation on the Wanamaker organ. But Evocation was conceived for, and first performed on, the organ of St-Ouen in Rouen, where Dupré's father was organist. Very much conceived for those sonorities, and that acoustic, it is dedicated to Dupré père.

@@scottcantrell4962 I had always understood it was one of the Wanamaker works. I stand corrected. Still think late Dupré sounds best on English and American organs.
