    Joseph, been on the Olympus scene for just over two years now since wanting to have something that was great and more compact than my 20 previous years with Nikon. I would say that your videos have been inspirational to me and I think the best on this platform. Em1..5mk11..and now the Em1 mk11 has create for me some of my favourite images as a professional photographer over a lifetime. The old saying that the "best camera in the world" is the one you have with you..holds fast here, as this small system is so easy to carry. I admit if your into the much larger lenses like the pro fast lenses this is less applicable but with the ones most users carry, this really is the best day to day system in my opinion referencing size and quality. Please keep up your great informative vids and I guess your be moving onto the new Em1x in 2019.Look forward to what you say about it...

    For me the manual focus ring makes the pro line of lenses the absolute best. I almost always use the manual focus ring because I do a lot of shooting at night where the auto focus will not work. Great video as usual - thanks Joe.

      Gerald Braun I’ve assigned fn1 to AF / MF that way I focus mf then af lock with a button and alter exposure as required then tap shutter to take the shot. I can also use mf if I wish. I use the knobs and screen to select and position focus point .... there are so many ways to set up mk2 😎

    I just picked up an EM-1 with the 24-80mm lens and your videos are really helping with my learning curve. I still own a FF, but I've got a lot to learn on M43. I owned many film Olys and love that the EM-1 feels very much like the "old school" OM bodies. Thanks for all these tutorials.

    I have had my OM-D EM-5 Mark II for about a year now at first the grain threw me off but over time the grain grew on me as the images I captured seem to have more life to them at least to my eyes. The Auto focus, IBIS and the ability to setup the camera the way I want it is what keeps me grabbing it over my Nikon. Being a visually impaired shooter and having the ability to customize these cameras the way I want is wonderful as I can't always see the menu to find a particular setting I maybe looking for. Also the weight is another factor all together my Nikon kit is substantially larger and heavier to carry around then my Olympus even if I had the heaviest Pro lens and a grip on the Olympus it wouldn't be anywhere near the size or weight of my Nikon with a 180mm F2.8 D attached.

    Thank you. Great video. I have the two OMD 5 bodies for two years and still found this helpful. GREAT cameras. One area of disagreement, the organizations I work for prefer that my RAW work be submitted -0.3 versus brighter as you suggested. My learnings have been there is more hidden in the darkness than the brightness. Additional thoughts? Again, thanks.

    A tip for high-ISO shooting: Use a higher ISO and go for brighter shots (as you said as a general rule). This way noise is lower/no banding in the resulting images. For the E-M1 MkII this is not so important (works there too, though), but with the Pen F and other non-pro models it makes all the difference.

    Joseph, thank you so much for your content. I've just acquired an EM1 MKII and, wow, it's overwhelming! I've come on board with back button focus lock, but how can I independently lock exposure? With back button focus lock, the exposure is locked by halfway pressing the shutter, but what if I need to recompose my shot? Say, I'm working with beautiful light in a large room; I'd want to lock my exposure, but then zoom in on my subject, or re-frame my shot to avoid something unsightly. I've locked focus, but how do I zoom in, while halfway pressing the shutter to keep exposure locked? Is there a way I can assign one of the thousands of buttons on this camera to lock exposure, independent of focus? I appreciate any assistance, Joseph, thank you!

    Dear Joseph…. have bought an epl9 …. beautiful object but when in manual how do you flip between adjusting aperture and speed ….. right now i can only adjust the speed …. am in bright sunlight so despite exposure for highlights i need to adjust the shutter …??
    None of this is in the manual!!
    OK for general info Olympus have mislabeled aperture as exposure compensation in the Dial function menus …. I’ve opted for exp comp and now have Exposure as desired !! thanks :)

    The only downside of em-m1x is slow reaction to exposure changes in movie modes. Just shoot an extended video review, after few hours will be online, half an hour, compared to Nikon Z6, Pana G9 and other cameras. Also dynamic range is weaker.

    Hi Joe, I havent upgraded to the EM1 mkii because I felt there was not a sufficient improvement in image quality over the 16mp sensor (you can correct me on that) and especially since I have capped out my ISO at 1600. I understand the concept of exposing to the right, but I still suffer from the nasty habit of shooting slightly underexposed for fear of blowing highlights but really the normal camera exposure setting is probably going to be correct in most situations especially if shooting in RAW. Since a lot of my portrait work is travel where you dont get a lot of time to take the shot, I do use face detect, its there so why not use it. Its generally good especially when you take in the xtra depth of field with M4/3. That said if Olympus can perfect the eye detect that would be a real game changer and we must see that in the new camera and even better a firmware upgrade on the EM1 mkii. I fear the new camera is going to be too big and too expensive making the SonyA7iii a very attractive option. But it will be very interesting to see what Olympus has built for their 100 year anniversary!

    Thank you, Joeseph. Happy 2019 to you as well. Some of the settings you mention as "gotchas" have got me. The Live View Boost not in "off" most recently. I am working on saving customized settings to the available Custom modes on the mode dial. It is tedious but I hope it is a process I only must do once. For example, switching from shooting landscapes to birds in flight then to portraits. 3 cameras in one. Am I displaying rose-colored optimism or do you think it even practical to attempt? Any general or specific suggestions in utilizing the custom modes would be most welcome.

    Excellent video. Very helpful. I have a question though. When I have the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 mounted on my em-10 II...it gives kind of a WB flicker while it focuses at autofocus. Obviously that usually takes less than a second but it is noticeable and none of my Olympus lens does this. Is is common for all Panasonic lenses OR is it a thing about lack of understanding between the Olympus body and Panasonic lens OR my lens is broken?
    Thank you very much for your time and effort.

    Dear Joseph, I did not succeed in finding You EM1-settings for wedding shooting.
    Though I am 99% shooting manually (an understatement) I would be interested in these settings to compare them to my theoretically used custom settings for aperture priority shooting.

    I hadn’t realized it was the silent shutter causing the banding on my photos taken during ballet performances. Unfortunately I don’t know another solution as I’m trying not to distract the audience or dancers (In a very small theater)

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  4 года назад

      Hi Allie, yes for sure, the silent shutter will cause banding under some artificial lights and it's a bit of a pain. There are a few solutions 1. The EM1x and EM1.3 have the ability to time the shutter to avoid the banding - the computer sees the bands and fires in sync with the lights 2. You can buy a sound proofing cover for your camera - there are some universal ones that aren't too expensive but they reduce usability a bit and are a pain to handle 3. Shoot from further away, attend dress rehearsals and shoot with the mechanical shutter, or change the light in the space. Sorry I don't have any better ideas for you, I'm definitely looking forward to a day when they've solved this problem.

    Please help me out here!!
    I have got new a Olympus omd em1 ii a couple of days before! The camera is on firmware version 1.0.
    Please guide me how can I update my camera with all the firmware that came in last 2 and half years? Or should I just update the latest version? Would that mean I would get all the firmware updates' benefits till latest one?

      Hi Shahzad, you can go directly to the latest firmware. You'll need the free software Olympus Digital Camera Updater (from the Olympus website) and the USB cable that came with your camera. The software will guide you through the process, just make sure you're using a full battery.

    Why is the iso going up while more light is coming in?

  • @WMedl
    @WMedl 5 лет назад

    The only reason for turning ISO on is when shooting in (semi)automatic mode and jpeg to force the camera for a smaller exposure time. ISO does NOT influence the sensor it only amplifies signals AFTER the exposure! If there is nothing received nothing can be amplified. BUT the amplification is done generally over the whole range deteriorating dynamic and tonal range (along with amplifying noise). So it is better to do processing selectively on the computer!
