    Strum from your wrist, not your elbow.

    For someone who nearly seventy it's seems to be harder than it sounds, but will keep trying. My wrists do not seem so flexable as they used to. Good advice though. Thanks.

    Strum from the wrist, not the elbow, demo at 1:00

  • @JeannaB

    Yes. I told my students the elbow may be used to help hold the ukulele if not strap. But that is its job.
    The wrist must twitch to strum. Lol

    Should I be strumming with my index finger or thumb? I feel more comfortable with my thumb but have trouble when I strum up. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

      You should be strumming with your index finger. I actually strum with multiple fingers at the same time. Makes for a nice sound.

    Hi! I‘ve been searching the internet forever and couldn’t really find an answer: can I just strum the uke like I’m used to on the guitar or should I learn this way of strumming? Is there any downside or doesn’t it matter at all?
    What I mean is,
    down = mostly pointer finger and rest of fingers
    up = thumb :)
    Thanks!! 🎸

    As a uke player, I resent the fact that you think you should tell us how we should strum. It is a personal style, and there's NO RIGHT OR WRONG way to strum. So STOP with your ordering people around.

    • @javi_blinkuniverse
      @javi_blinkuniverse 4 года назад +3

      The reason is because many can use their elbow to hold the uke up, but if you find that elbow strumming is more successful and comfortable for you, you do you

      There are many ways to strum and many techniques that improve your playing. Strumming from a relaxed wrist can allow you to strum quicker and makes it easy to keep a rhythm with the strum hand. You can do a fast, smoother tremelo using a relaxed, flexible wrist. I sometimes use a combination of relaxed wrist and a strong down arm strum from the elbow depending on the song or rhythm I'm trying to produce. There's no one single way to strum uke. Many different ways, styles and combinations. I think he was giving a good tip on strumming basics and a relaxed wrist is common knowledge. Even Jake teaches that in some of his early tutorial videos.

    You're still not strumming where it sounds the best - at the soundhole.

    • @richardcogbill6791
      @richardcogbill6791 8 месяцев назад +1

      The sound hole is not the best spot. The sweet spot is the area of the lower fretboard where the neck attaches to the body.
      Many newer ukes can have sound holes on different areas of the body even the sides.
