OH MY GOODNESS do you give us SOOOO much in your tutorials, Marion!!! A pocket “with a nod to history”, how to make our own patterns, how to sew them up and then a beautiful modeling by you-it’s PERFECTION! Your new outfit is just gorgeous on you, Marion-it compliments your great haircut too! Thank you again and again and again for all the joy you bring us!!!

Thank you, Marion. This is what I enjoy most: frugal sewing, living lightly, consuming less. There’s a saying I really like: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Marion, you leave a small footprint on our earth. Bless you for it. I will definitely use these techniques. I really need a pattern for a pinny. Where I’m from we called it a jumper. By you, a jumper is a sweater. Very confusing. When I lived in England back in the 1970’s, my daughter spent work days with a family across the street. They “hoovered” their floors. We vacuumed. In my daughter’s mind it became “bacuum coobering.” So cute! 💜💜💜

A lovely tutorial and I thought your new clothes looked lovely. I don’t think skirts look so good on me but ever since I first saw these tie waisted 18 th century petticoats I ve liked the idea of making one for under a dress. You always inspire me and I ve got a lot of projects all waiting to take shape as a result. Thanks so much for your gentle, informative and confidence-building videos x
Great video Marion, thankyou for showing us your sewing videos, it helps all of us that are visual people and sometimes fine reading patterns hard or confusing.

If I wasn't afraid to fly I would come help tidy the garden. It is beautiful!
Thanks Marion! I'm so thankful to you for learning so many techniques. The skirt and independent pocket are both brilliant ideas!! Thank you so much!!!❤
I've always wanted to have a go at making clothes, but thought that a step too far for me, but thanks to the ease you have demonstrated using existing clothes as a pattern, has stirred an excitement in me. I don't understand how to read patterns. I've said it before and I repeat 'You are an inspiration. ' Thank you 😊
Thanks Denise. I've suggested to others to thrift a mans' extra large long sleeve shirt as practice fabric. If you get it right the first time that's brilliant and you can then buy pretty fabric if you want to and make a second one. It means you're not wasting anything expensive and will probably get a good new t shirt as well 😊
I just love this tutorial. I had never sewn my own clothes, but this looks really good. I love that you showed us the pocket. A few people had said they were making a pocket. I love all the stitching you put on it. They all are fabulous. You are a great teacher.
Dearest Marion, that gorgeous embroidered linen fabric has indeed been honored by becoming such a lovely useful skirt with invisible hem. I like the idea of the hem being able to shift separate from the skirt. Beautiful! 🥀🧵🪡xo
I’ve never seen the independent pocket you wear under your skirt. So cool. That would be good for travelling, to dissuade pick-pocketers. More comfortable than a bulky money belt. ❤️🇨🇦
It is a very secure way of carrying your valuables. When I go out in summer wearing these, I don't need to carry anything else. Everything goes in my pocket and feels very safe. You can't even tell I'm wearing it either! I should really have made another on the same waist tie, but I haven't really felt the need for another one.
What a beautiful gentle and clever lady you are, wow - a fantastic teacher too! Thank you....Not a confident clothing sewer myself, though after watching this, I am considering having an attempt at this skirt you've given the oh so wonderful tuition for. Love your style, your work, presentation and gorgeous voice. Thank you Marion.💖
OMG Marion, skirt making, top making and designing your own pattern, I’m in awe of your talents. I ever realised that’s how you can design a sewing pattern from an existing garment, we will save ££££s now you have shown us. Thank you
Just had a eureka moment from this video. I think I would like to make a pocket/pouch as you illustrated, embellished with stitching, etc. to be worn outside of those annoying garments without pockets.
Great idea! But you’ll have to make it safe from pickpockets if it’s on top. Would it be cool to make a casing at the top so you can thread through a belt or a pretty scarf? That way you can change it up. See, you gave me a eureka moment. Thanks! 💜
I always wear skirts and dresses, and jersey tops with pinafores. This is just the tutorial I need. I have always been afraid to sew with jersey, as I have a basic sewing machine and didn’t know if it would be suitable. Now that I know I can use zig-zag, there’s no stopping me!
Hi! I have an old Singer Futura from the 1980’s. It has a stitch for stretch fabrics. It’s a zig-zag with a parallel line of broken straight stitches. I tell you this because you may have a stitch like that on your machine. Happy stitching. 💜
Zig zag will work perfectly. Just have a practice on a spare piece of fabric to get the stitch length right. It shouldn't be too close. I use the widest I can do, but modern machines will have more settings than I have. My machine is from 1959! You might have a stretch stitch already....🤔
I was just trying to show that you don't actually need much to make good clothes for yourself. I know why patterns seem expensive as there's a lot of work that goes into getting them to market. But there's so many people who might want to make something but the cost makes it prohibitive.
Wow. Just added a split waist skirt to my to do list. And then I'll try the top. Your explanations are so clear they give me confidence to have a go. Thank you!
You remind me of my mother, she could just sit and sew almost anything. Made all of us kids' clothes for school and even made my wedding dress. Love the ease of the skirt and the pocket is something hidden away, hard for a pickpocket to get to that one.
Such a beautiful skirt and wonderful tutorial. The material is so lovely and looks so good in the skirt. I love the hidden pocket. What a very clever idea the ladies of bygone days had. Thank you for showing and modelling your gorgeous creations. xx
I love your skirt and tshirt making ❤. I've made shirts that same way and they are my favorites, because they fit right. Will try to make a skirt like yours. Also, I've been looking on RUclips for a video that gives details for making the tie-on pocket, but they are vague. Good evening Marion, thank you for sharing, love the skirts, you look beautiful in the new outfit. You are such a talented lady. Have a good evening ❤xx
🌼 .....Thank you Marion your new skirt and top look really pretty and suit you so well. About pockets....recently I bought some new trousers with no pockets....ever since I find I have nowhere to put anything...I have lost my keys several times as a result....pockets are perhaps the single most important thing in clothing! Have a lovely week....I am late starting your little stumpwork bee but that is what I will be doing today. 🌼🌼🌼
Thank you, Marion. I enjoyed watching these come together. I have made a few divided waist skirts before and I agree, they are very comfortable. I haven't sewn jersey. I may give it a try. Also, love the herringbone hem. ❤
I just found you! A stitcher after my own heart, and your voice is a lovely northern one, like mine, though I've lived abroad now most of my life. Thanks so much for the skirt. I saw this idea on historical channels and have been meaning to make one for a while, so now I will.
Thank you Marion for your video. Oh my goodness, amazing. What an excellent tutorial, I have watched a few tutorials on how to get a pattern from a top but this beats them all hands down. No jargon ,to the point and full demonstration. Love the simplicity of the skirt and the pocket, with a hope for summer I feel a make coming on and I love the herringbone hem. The fact it has a moving waistband is a huge bonus 😂
I have been experimenting making my own clothes using table linens ,so far making blouses and aprons but you have made me interested to make a skirt using your pattern .I learned a lot from watching your video thankyou so very much for your generosity.
I really do enjoy your enthusiasm for all your projects, it is very inspiring. Love the garments and they look really nice. Thanks for being brave and modelling your creations❤. Excellent tutorial, you should be teaching classes!! I am going to make a pocket for my secateurs, which I keep misplacing everywhere around the garden, because of course my garden clothing either has no pockets, or just teeny tiny ones. Thanks a bunch, Marion!
"Lucy Lockett lost her pocket". This historical rhyme features a tie on pocket because you can't lose a modern insert pocket. Some were simply plain and functional whilst the upper classes wore highly stitched and embroidered ones.
A few months ago I pinned a video on Pinterest, making a skirt the way you show today. I forgot it, untill now. I want to make a skirt like that, they are very easy to make and to wear. I never make a pattern the way you do. Using an old shirt and drawing around it. When I was young I learned how to draw my own patterns, and that it how I still do.
I can draft my own patterns and would really like to be able to do it better than I can, but thought this was a super easy way to show everyone how it doesn't have to be too difficult when you're starting from nothing. Wearing your own made clothes is so lovely.😊
You are so right: this way of making the shirt is perfect, specially for all those people who never make clothes. It is easy and you are not frustrated: it cannot go wrong. I love making my own clothes.
Love this skirt pattern! For a few years I have wanted to make a full long patch work skirt with a large ruffle. Your skirt and pocket design will work so well for this. I am tall so the length and fullness should look well on me. Super excited! Hmmm, if I can find the time to sew it up I can wear it to my son's wedding! 😊Thank you! ❤
I like mine long enough that I'm not forever having to tuck them in.... It's from years of bending down weeding as a gardener. You need your back to stay warm whilst you work 😅
Love the history of the pocket idea so cool thank you so much for the video I can’t wait to see the top you make from the vintage white table top you found
Oh my! The only time I’ve ever tried to make clothing was at school, and I put the arm in upside down so that it looked like It was waving! 😂 Maybe after watching this I’ll be brave enough to give it another go. That skirt looks a joy to wear. I especially love the pocket Thank you
There’s a book about the history of the detached pocket. It’s called “The Pocket” - A Hidden History of Women’s Lives. Written by Barbara Burman & Ariane Fennetaux. Quite interesting with lots of historical photos too!
Your videos are absolutely brilliant! I'm not a big sewer but have made a hussif, book/thingy, inspired by a previous video, also very interested in the handsewn dress you made,. But the skirt from this video i will definitely have a go at, never seen anything like it, thanks so much, you really inspire me I'm a knitter normally.
It's such a quick and easy make. If you don't want it as full as mine is you just have to decide on how much gathering or pleating you want. There's no wrong way 😊
What a lovely video - so easy to follow your instructions - and such a pretty skirt and jersey 🫶🏻. I havn’t worn a skirt for as long as I can remember, but having bought a lot of material while thrifting, I will try to make a skirt like yours. It looks so comfortable🤗. I’m so, so happy that I found your channel, and you are so good at explaining what you are doing, so I feel inspired by your example. Thank you so much🌸🌺🍀🌷💗🥰
I love wearing my skirts.. After years of trouser wearing I just started wearing dresses and skirts more. They're so comfy and you can use pretty fabric for them 👍☺️
I've never made my own clothes because I didn't know how to read a pattern. After this video I think I'm going to give it a go, if I can accomplish it I know I'll have a better fit. Your outfit turned out beautiful, that green looks so good on you and I love it with that skirt. Perfect necklace too! Love to see videos like this and look forward to that green coat you've been meaning to make. Thank you!
Now that is a bonnie skirt!! What a magnificent tutorial on making a complete outfit -- and with a pocket!! I have gotten to the age I do not like a skirt or dress without pockets!! THANKS.

Thank you yet again Marion for being such an inspiration to those of us who may shy away from sewing our own clothes! I now feel enboldened to try and make the skirt! Also I feel like I could now attempt a pair of summer trousers as well using the method you demonstrated with the T shirt. 😊
Simple trousers are easy to get the pattern from. Just make sure you accurately draw round the shape of the crotch curve. After that you can slim the legs or make them wider... it's up to you 👍

I just found you! A stitcher after my own heart, and your voice is a lovely northern one, like mine, though I've lived abroad now most of my life. Thanks so much for the skirt. I saw this idea on historical channels and have been meaning to make one for a while, so now I will.
Brilliant... I think it's an easy to wear skirt for our modern times too...
Where in the North East are you from Liz?
I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales then Middlesbrough. Been in the US since I was a young bride.
Thank you. I learn so much watching you. You explain well.
You look lovely! Great video, thank you so much!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Carol.
I have been experimenting making my own clothes using table linens ,so far making blouses and aprons but you have made me interested to make a skirt using your pattern .I learned a lot from watching your video thankyou so very much for your generosity.
Thank you for watching. I also have made clothes from old tablecloths. It's lovely that they get used 👍🧵🪡
I really do enjoy your enthusiasm for all your projects, it is very inspiring.
Oh you'll have to use some heavyweight fabric for your secateurs.....
Awesome as always! You Rock! Thank you!
"Lucy Lockett lost her pocket". This historical rhyme features a tie on pocket because you can't lose a modern insert pocket. Some were simply plain and functional whilst the upper classes wore highly stitched and embroidered ones.
I'm making an embroidered one 👍💐
😊Thank you! ❤
Now that sounds like you've challenged yourself 👍😅
@@marionsworld24 😆 Yup, I think your right he is getting married May 18th! 😆 🤣 😂
This skirt is a great idea for hot summer days and I like long t shirts..thanks
I like mine long enough that I'm not forever having to tuck them in.... It's from years of bending down weeding as a gardener. You need your back to stay warm whilst you work 😅
Thank you for this video. I struggle with sewing knit but you made it look so easy. I’m going to just jump in and do it!😊
Absolutely.. just dive right in. How about thrifting an extra large man's jersey tee to cut up. You'll get enough usable fabric to practice on. .🤔
@@marionsworld24 that’s a great idea. I will do it and let you know how it turns out. Thank you Marion😊
Love the history of the pocket idea so cool thank you so much for the video I can’t wait to see the top you make from the vintage white table top you found
I have a new pocket project to make... When I can find the time to stitch it 😅
Thank you so much Marion. I am going to attempt making the skirt.
Brilliant...
Thank you
Wow, thank you! Looks great xxx
Love that skirt!❤
The green looks wonderful on you!!
Just can’t wait to make that skirt! Thanks so much 😊
👍
Oh my! The only time I’ve ever tried to make clothing was at school, and I put the arm in upside down so that it looked like It was waving! 😂 Maybe after watching this I’ll be brave enough to give it another go. That skirt looks a joy to wear. I especially love the pocket Thank you
You should definitely give it another go... Put the ghost of the upside down arm to rest!😂
There’s a book about the history of the detached pocket. It’s called “The Pocket” - A Hidden History of Women’s Lives. Written by Barbara Burman & Ariane Fennetaux. Quite interesting with lots of historical photos too!
I saw that k3n had just got that book when I saw her video. I hadn't known about the book before.... I'll have to see if I can get hold of a copy 😊
There's no wrong way 😊
Marion, you are amazing!
They're so comfy and you can use pretty fabric for them 👍☺️
Wonderful! I’ll be making the skirt for sure.
Great ideas !!! Thanks x
You never cease to amaze me!
💐
I love watching your videos. You explain things so well. I'm going to try the skirt. Thank you!
You're very welcome 👍
Really enjoyed your video great skirt and just loved the separate pocket thank you for sharing, ❤❤

Looking good. Enjoyed watching.
Thank you!
Green coat....half done...😏
@@marionsworld24 I forgot to mention yesterday but I love that bird fabric dress you had on!
Thank you great tutorial and your new hair cut looks lovely ❤
💐
Now that is a bonnie skirt!! What a magnificent tutorial on making a complete outfit -- and with a pocket!! I have gotten to the age I do not like a skirt or dress without pockets!!
THANKS.
Pockets are mandatory!
Thank you Marion, that was amazing. I love them both. Definately doing both if these. Beautiful colours on you
Thank you for sharing the "extra pocket" I will be making the skirt and the pocket. Your skirt is beautiful.❤
Separate pockets are great! You get so much in them.. I really should do a pretty stitched one, but the one I made already works perfectly fine...
This is a very sweet little channel. I cannot wait to browse all of the videos :)
Oh Thank you so much. Welcome to my channel and I hope you enjoy watching what I've been doing... :)
@@marionsworld24 My new friend Julie shred your channel with me. My family is originally from Northumberland several generation ago :) Julie and I are going to start a stitchery book. I am very excited :) Much love from across the pond :)
Marion, thank you for a wonderful tutorial! Absolutely love the skirt and the pocket underneath is really such a great idea!
It's a very old idea from when ladies didn't have pockets at all....
Going to try making a t shirt now...thank you.
I'm glad you're going to have a go Colin.... Thanks so much for watching.
That was so nice the way you make your clothes. You are definitely an experienced seamstress. It makes me feel like I could attempt it also! Thank You! Plus it looks very lovely on you & the pocket would be so fun to do too!!!!❤😊
I'm sure you can do it too. Try using some thrifted fabric as a practice maybe...
That FABRIC is devine! Thanks for your lovely video. K3N sent me over, in her pocket video. Im fond of long skirts.
It's a dream to wear too. I love wearing dresses and skirts... I always have my pocket underneath. It holds everything I need when I'm out and about 😊
Brilliant teaching your amazing ❤️
Great tutorial and love your new outfit!!❤
Wonderful, I am inspired to have a go at that style of skirt. And I love your pocket, I am working on mine now and should hopefully have it ready to share on Friday. I will tell everyone to come and look at yours, and how to make a skirt to go with it. 😁❤️
That's so funny Kathryn. I've had so many comments asking for a tutorial I've been saying I'll make one to show how to do it...😊 I'm behind on watching your videos but I'll make sure I have a look on Friday 👍🧵🪡
We definitely need to get together somehow. ....🤔
I sent you an email on the subject 😁❤️
Such an excellent tutorial for making some nice clothing items to wear. They will be unique to the individual sewist ❤❤
Absolutely!
After that you can slim the legs or make them wider... it's up to you 👍
Thanks Marion, I will take your kind advice and gather up my courage! 😘
Well, I love the tee that you made, the neckline is perfect & the way I love them ! Your skirts are lovely too ! You are a great seamstress Marion ! 🪡🩵🧵
