Description:
In all my videos it’s my goal to help you Maximize Your Shop! In this video I build a mobile storage shelf for my garage to help me organize my tools. This storage shelf is made with 2x4 dimensional lumber and a single sheet of plywood. I also used 3" casters. I drew a set of plans for this build that you can find on my Etsy page if you like. This large shelf provides 32 sq-ft of storage space that makes storing and moving 100's of lbs of gear simple and easy.

Old video I know... You mention you put the weight on the casters but then you screw your main supports to the SIDE of the caster base and not resting them on top of the base. Aren't you now putting all the weight and stress on the screws instead of resting it on top of the casters? Not to say this won't hold up just fine the way it is constructed, I just don't think the casters are holding the brunt of the direct weight. Obviously weight will get distributed throughout the base, but if you loaded up that cabinet with some insane weight, the weak point are now those screws along the perimeter of the base and not the base/casters themselves, right?
at 2:40 he said if building again, he would place the casters under the columns.
What program/software did you use? The name of it.

I ordered your plans from Etsy yesterday. While reviewing the plan consumable list I noticed the 1 1/2” wood screws. I’ve read the build instructions but cannot find the use for the 1 1/2 “ screws. Am I correct in assuming that they are optional for attaching the plywood instead of using brad nails?

Thanks for the video. Two questions for a novice. 1)could I put the long supports on the side instead of front and back? 2)with wood prices. What about 1/2" plywood with a midspan 2x4
David, you could switch the direction of the supports, I'm struggling too visualize exactly what you're describing. My goal was to minimize material use. 2. 1/2" ply would be extremely strong. A mid support would help prevent some bow. I used OSB over plywood to save some money. 2x3s or other smaller lumber could also be used to save some cost. Many commercial shelves use 1/2" or thinner particle board with no support which is much weaker than both OSB and ply.
@@benchtopwoodworks thank you. Hopefully this helps. Long support legs on left and right, instead of front and back. As for 1/2 with a 2x4 in middle of shelf (front to back about 24 inches)
Ahh I got it, yes that would work. Just adjust accordingly on plywood sizing or lengths of the stringers. My design intent was maximizing surface area for the lap joints of the long shelf supports vs the short sides. I don't think there's much of a strength tradeoff
Great video I'm not a carpenter but will try and build these shelves myself. My question is did Home Depot cut the plywood to 24" sections for the shelves? And how long are the boards (deep) 24"inches or 27" for the sides?
Thanks for watching and the comment. The home depot did cut the plywood sheet into 4x 24" x 48" shelves. The shelves are 24" deep. The braces underneath are around 21" if my memory serves correct. The long shelf-supports are 48".

Best of luck with the build! I definitely recommend woodglue and screws if you have the capability. Glue for certain.
What kind of apron do you use, and what are your thoughts on recessed t-tracks on a work bench?
Jack, first off... is this who I think it is? I hope you are well!
I've been wearing generic waxed cotton apron from Amazon. I can't recall the brand.
I like the idea of recessed T-slots. I designed them into the latest digital model of my bench for router fence/miter saw stop block. I recommend you ensure the top of your bench is thick enough to still be strong when removing that material. Some of the track profiles range from 3/8" to 5/8" tall.
For clamping, I prefer dog-hole style clamps, but I've never used a work table with T-slot or clamping grooves, so I've got no experience there to compare them by.
@@benchtopwoodworks I am he. I recently finished my own work bench I laid 4 48" tracks into the bench itself. The top deck is 2 sheets of stacked 3/4" plywood. I routered into the top one, then drilled holes (through both sheets) for some #8-32 machine screws. 12 per track. Fender washers, and nylon lock nuts ont the bottom to clamp it all together. The wife was PISSED about the wood chips all over the carafe.
I also flooded the entire recess with locktite adhesive to fill in the woopsie marks from the router. I've never done anything like that, so I tried to go for over-built.

@@benchtopwoodworks I currently live in a new housing development. With all of the new houses going up, there are 4x12s laying all over the place. I got permission to take the cutoffs, and I am going to reinforce the bottom shelf with them. It's only a 3x8. I sent you some pics.
What size where the wheels
I used 3" I don't recommend any smaller
