"Lay your focus on where you want to go... not where you're trying to avoid" YES to this. It is so good to hear another mountain biker describe this. I feel like I learned this after my third season of mountain biking, and I would say this mantra is what took me from beginner to intermediate!
I would return to mtb racing if we had courses like this in my region. Instead, lines are way more ‘micro’, between pointy rocks.... This looks super fun, so many lines to work with! Great video, gents!
Same here. I'm from New England where there's almost no trails with flow like this, and almost every trail system has numerous rocky, rooty sections, with many trees with lines in and out of them.
Great video... I spent years cherry picking a race here or there, and just last year raced an 11 race series in Cat 2 and learned a lot mostly trial and error. Back at it this year in the series and a video like this is so helpful. I had a bit of a bad performance yesterday with a lot of dabs on a rocky course.. slick from rain and tire pressure a bit too high made for a tricky day. It was comforting to see Cat 1's dabbing and the pros mentioning running sections or 'flint-stoning' too... so now not beating myself up so bad for having a sub par performance.. I guess riding clean can be tough for everyone!
At 8:20 that rock/root, instead of zig zagging around it, get your front end light (manual) over that rock straight on and you'll go into that next boulder with about 2mph more speed and it literally carries you right over it
Did the 50 miler team ride there is 2013 at Folsom lake, we came in 3rd place. Hot and dry, and challenging course. Great video. I need to do it again and post better personal times.
I think the key thing here is doing a track walk before and really thinking about where you want to carry speed. For example if you have a tight right followed by a tight left followed by a straight, you don't really care how much speed you carry out of the first corner, it's all about the exit of the second. Also general rule is obviously start wide, clip apex, exit wide. However in mountain biking there are often opportunities to cut corners or use supportive berms to ignore the corner.
i dont race, but this was really helpful just for riding better, thx! some of these things i do (like i drop my dropper all the time to whip the bike around flat twisty sections at speed) so very validating as well.
These are my home trails. They run these races in the opposite direction than most of us ride them. It makes for a totally different ride, really cool perspective.
The tyre should be something more toward speed XCO like Racing Ralph (lower and tighten knobs in the centre), that could help you on climbing rocks, and allows you more speed. This is the second video I fully watch, great advice!!! Keep doing it
This is very different from anything I've seen so far on RUclips. I'm subscribing. I look forward to see more content like this. It would be awesome to be able to draw lines vs. the arrows. Not sure how to do that though.
around 15 min there appears to be a really wide left line. Not sure what the entry was like but looks like you could carry a lot more speed around there.
OK, I have watched it all and have some follow ups ;) why did You run so big nobs tires when terrain looks to be dry and hard as well. 2nd is This type of analyze is fun to watch but very hard to apply in real life. You would have to run the course several times to know all the best lines, don't You think?
With experience, you start to identify the best lines more easily so that it becomes instinct rather than concentrated thought. By understanding the pricipals, you can take that knowledge and apply them to your home trails.
If you haven't seen these already, we have a few videos of Jonathan racing EWS with advice from Richie Rude! You can check them out here: ruclips.net/p/PLrKJ0zeMQrI7Lj7l2RfNJIic1V5KTrzpH
Maybe rotate in some gnarly enduro and DH training, the more roots and rocks the better. After a few months of that anything in this video will feel like a stroll in the park and you'll be faster and better at reading situations too I bet.

I’m just getting into XC racing. This video is an awesome learning tool.
So glad we could help you on your journey! Keep it up :)
Sick video. Love all the tips you guys are giving out. You should do more of these for sure!!

Please keep the XC content coming. Maybe some gravel races too? Really fun and insightful content. Thanks!
We'll keep em coming!
XCellent video, thank you! Keep these tips coming.
Super helpful!!! More detail thought process on technical terrain projects please!
love the walk throughs like this
This is extremely helpful because this is one for the venues for the NICA racing, can’t wait to use some of these lines.
It is!! This is the Granite Bay course :)
Excellent! Keep these coming. Also, another Keegan on board race video analysis from one of his races would be awesome.
Some pumping when available can help in tight spots (corners or dips)
All good stuff. I live in Chico, so we ride Bidwell Park a lot.
Which is rocks on rocks with lava cap underneath, its a wonder land.
Very cool video. i am a novice rider and these videos are very informative. Thanks!!!
Ryan Alice Springs fella riding rocks since forever

4 years later and this rock garden is still a pain in the ass 😂😂😂
Just watched three of these XC videos...and.,. subscribed
Thanks so much for watching! We'll keep the XC content coming :)

Great video, love the MTB content!!!
This content is gold!
Could you guys do an Xc bike setup video with the pros. Also nutrition/bottled for a race of this length

This is fantastic! Thanks!
Awesome education - thanks!
Great advices, very good video
Where is the rock garden?
Couldn't find one, even in the part where you refered to it as a rock garden
Obviously you don't know what's a Rock Garden...
great vid, really helps reinforce the pre race recon (if you can).
I thought Jonathan wasn't going to talk!!!! We love you but let 'dem pros go!
Jonathan always has so much to say! He doesn't really waste words either
Great video. Just wandering, what is the size of your chainring?
Nate has a 32 tooth chainring for this race!
@@TrainerRoad thank you for replying 🙂
How can you be faster and smoother when coming into turns when this is your first time riding the turn. also (tight turns)
love the tips
I gave a thumbs up. Great video. Only comment is that I would like to know how you finished?
Nate took 35th in the Pro/Expert category :)
What bike is Nate on
Nate is on a Pivot Mach 4 :)
What tires are you using on this? Is that CST rockhawk?
Nate's running the Schwalbe Nobby Nic/Rocket Ron combo
Just asking how long is the stem and handlebar?
90mm stem, 760mm bars :)

More Keegan!!!!
For XC racing when is the beat time to break from the lead group?
Whenever you're able to
forget the dopper!!! it turns more complicated on races, more things to deal with 👌😉
More of these lines analysis
I thought we were going to see pros ride. This appears to be a cat 3 rider
Nate is an amateur rider, but the commentators are pro level riders critiquing his choices and giving advice on how he could improve :)
@@TrainerRoad it'd be cool to see if Jonathon and Nate rode the same race see side by side of what Nate did wrong and Jonathon did right
Yeaaa
Granite Bay🤘
You should do these videos but with someone that's actually skilled/fast

just another reason to train on a singlespeed- full bore into pinches, in the wrong gear. a season on SS and you won’t choke this badly
That dude off the bike blocking the race line tho 😑
More MTB videos.
More to come!
Thousandth like
not seeing a single xc pro here
Hair 2day - Hair 2moro..
that guy sounds like Elon Musk
I think this is pointless, unless you're there you can't relate
TBF is not a ‘pro’ race.
Keegan and Ryan are Pros, they are the ones commenting. Keegan Swenson is the US Pro National champ in XC.
TrainerRoad ok saved by a hair 🤣
TrainerRoad @Nate hope you had a good race out there. Lots of Reno peeps. Perfect day out 👌🏼
