The main thing to know when you do it for the first time - it's not sticky, you can wrap/unwrap it as many times as you want, so just try it and redo if needed.
If you don't overlap enough, the grip will separate. Also, if you have a two handed BH, you can wrap it higher up toward the throat. This will give you plenty of cushioning for your second hand.
I feel like I've watched a lot of these and this was the most helpful. The close-up angle when you initially put the grip on, and going slow through the process really helped. I feel like I finally did a good job on my racquet. Thank you guys!!
I would add that if you use the finishing tape that comes with the overgrip, remove the backing before you begin wrapping as its tricky to remove while maintaining pressure/tension on the overgrip.
The tapered end is supposed to be at the top, not the bottom like he shows. That's why the sticky end of the tape on the narrow end is there so it will hold the overgrip in place as you finish off with the included tape. Why do you think the finish tape is so narrow? It's because it's supposed to be used on the narrow end at the TOP of the racquet.
I’ve been wrapping my racquet for 41 years. I do it the way he shows it here (tapered end at the heel). I do overlap it more. I don’t have any extra at the end.
The big tip I got, was starting up the racquet as soon as you come to your start point. I usually go further and always ended up with some small wrinkles the first couple of wraps. Well done, thanks
alternate idea...I start with the non tapered end and pull it really tight. It doesn't bunch up and create a seam. I overlap a bit more and it doesn't bother me because I use a 4 1/8 grip size. I use the whole wrap and wind up sticking the end with the adhesive and taper right at the very top of the grip. Works fine for me. And honestly with the Babolat with that elastic band it eliminates the need for the tape. YMMV.
I start with the non tapered end too, so no need for the scissors. And I will use all of over grip. His method use very little overlap. I prefer wider overlap that will give extra cushioning and ergonomics feel.
Thanks for the video. 3 things that work for me... I apply the square end of the over grip to the butt. That way, there is no cutting of the other end. I also overlap about 1/4 inch. then there is nothing to throw away at the end, it also provided more cushion as some have mentioned. The tape that comes with the over grips is usually crap, so I use electrical tape.
Thanks for the video. I’m new to the whole tennis thing and accidentally bought over grip instead of replacement grip. I ended up using electrical tape for the replacement grip and used this video for the over grip. Not bad for my first time.
With many of the overgrip tapes overlapping by 1/4 to 1/3 of the width allows the entire tape to be used and the end is already tapered so no need for scissors. Once you figure out what works for your brand of tape and grip diameter focus on consistently overlapping that much. At the start the hardest part is transitioning from the base wrap to the desired overlap in the second turn, but after a few tries you get the right spiral and tension to avoid wrinkles and get a good looking job.
I thought I had enough grip but it got finished 3/4 way up the handle so I taped it up and took another grip, cut it into the shape he showed at the end and finished it off to the end and taped it off. I've been playing with this for a week and so far so good.
I’ve re-wrapped baseball bats before, but never a tennis racket. Similar, but just to know how to start it and end it is key. I followed your instructions and it came out great! Thanks for the video!
Thanks! I just took an old racket who’s grip was deteriorating, and made it playable for a bit longer. I’m going to invest in a new racket soon as I haven’t played in years and have an old 40 or 50 dollar racket.
I go consistently 1/3rd coverage and never have extra to cut off and discard. My advice: do it a few times and get a feel of how much overlap you need. It does not have to be as little as 2mm, get a feel of your racquet. In 30+ years of wrapping racquets I've never done nor have I seen anyone cut off excess grip. Also, someone else said it, do unstick your sticky tape and tack it to something. Holding the top of your gripped racquet and trying to unstick the finishing tape is difficult.
@@Cmi1267 ok. I live in the Caribbean and Toronto. I've played for over 30 years, never seen it done. Honestly. I wrap so there is a consistent overlap and it ends at the top. To each it's own. Happy hitting.
Likewise, been playing for 25 years and haven't seen cutting, although I do have pretty big hands so I use 2 overgrips on my L3. I overlap 1/3rd as well although I'm very bad at it.
Easy to understand explanation. Don't know if it's the perfect overgrip though. Each to their own, I guess. Personally, I do it the other way around and ignore that little sticky tap at the end (your start) but fold the grip tape in on itself when I start on the bottom of the racket.
I always thought the sticky part goes last as it tapers for you. And it allows you to wrap as much as you want on the racquet without having to cut anything. He essentially tapered it himself when the other end is made like that
Thank you so much so clear just did mine, as applies my last one 30 years ago and saw what I did wrong! The beauty of RUclips and you guys for putting this on here! So grateful and will give it a rest run tonight. Amazing video 🙏

I like to build up the butt capp with training tape to 33% of Gasquet style. I put several wraps of foam Pro tape on the handle shaft. I finish with Overgrip. Thanks!
I just wrapped my squash racket and THEN watched this video...and I did EVERYTHING wrong.... But you learn more when you make mistakes. Will never forget. THANKS.
I was wrapping my over grip like that for a long time until one day a guy saw me and he told me that I am starting with wrong side of the wrap. He actually says that I need to start with the thicker side of the over grip wrap from the bottom so at the end I can stick it small part of the over grip wrap to the racquet with out holding it until I use the tape that comes with for the end of it and it makes sense to me.
Its unconventional but I start with the untapered end at the bottom and use the tapered end at the top to create a clean finish without scissors. Works for me.
Personally tasks like this or when I work on computers I like to wear silicon gloves. Don't want finger oils on the underside of your tennis grip. His hands looked really dry but last thing you under under your over grip is any oils / sweat etc.

A much better method is to start with the non-tapered end; just overlap the square end with the first wrap and then your're at exactly the same point as you would be if you had started with the tapered end. This way when you get to the top of the grip you will have the tapered end (no scissors required) and the little sticky part will lay right on the existing tape from the original grip (comes right off with a rub of the finger) and you don't end up with all that sticky build up on the grip around the butt end. Cheers.
