    I have been using some overgrips also as a replacement grip, there are actually thicker ones out there, they don't cause blisters, and I like little bit sharper edges that way I can find my grips easier during actual play. different strokes for different folks I guess.

    Replacement grips are also called base grips. I normally use a "feather thin" replacement grip with an overgrip. My favorite overgrip is the Dunlop Super Tac, hands down. It has got a great feel and above average durability.

      Do you have to use an over grip? And what are the benefits of using an over grip?

    • @abokickel
      @abokickel 2 месяца назад

      @@alexha2884 I like tacky grips with really good grasp. Base grips don't stay like that for a long time. A new fresh over grip solves that problem. I often use a leather base grip and they are slippery so an over grip is a must. Nadal doesn't use a base grip at all but rolls on two over grips in stead.

      I got sold an overgrip when I asked for a replacement grip and I've already installed it. Do you think I should add another overgrip on top of the other one as a substitute for the replacement grip? There there a two overgrips left in the package (Yonex Wet Super Grap).

  • @Sandysand701

    If you want save a little money or not waste plastic, you can swop the worn bottom part of the grip for the top part, as it usally doesn't get so worn out, but you have to re-wrap in the opposite direction.
    I've found Tecnifibre (in white) overgrips to be the best for staying tacky for along time.

    Replacement grips average 1.65mm in thickness, and the average overgrip is 0.55mm in thickness, so you can use 3 overgrips instead of 1 replacement grip if you wanted. As well as the fact Nick mentioned about there being slightly thinner replacement grips on the market, there are also slightly thinner overgrips. In particular, Wilson Pro Overgrip Sensation is 0.4mm thick, and it has a wonderful soft feel. However, it is very fragile so really only lasts one match.

    Oh, wow! I thought it was one of your old videos... Comments made me realize that you posted it on Nov 28th. I was very happily surprised to watch this particular video because today my coach replaced an overgrip where I asked him why he didn't remove the initial overgrip and continued putting it on top. And now I understand that the 1st layer grip, in my case, was the original one and I just added the overgrip (not the replacement grip)

    I used an overgrip for a little while, but over time I felt like I really didn't need it. I found a lot of them were too bulky, and even though that offers great comfort and sweat absorption, they can interfere with certain aspects of my game.
    Best example of this is on the serve, I remember I was practicing my serve one afternoon, and I wasn't having much luck at all. After a while, I was getting frustrated and was ready to call it a day, I decided to rip off my overgrip because it was getting dirty and I wanted to replace it later at home. So I took it off and for some reason I decided to give my serve one last try, to my surprise I hit three perfect serves in a row.
    I haven't given up entirely on overgrips because now I've run into a new problem, which is that it hurts my hand to play with just a replacement grip. I think I can counter his by simply buying a more padded replacement grip, but if I do go back to an overgrip, I need to find a very specific one. One that will offer good comfort and sweat absorption, but isn't too thick that it interferes.

    Over the years, I have been pretty dissatisfied with overgrips because they don't feel the same as replacement/base grips nor do they last as long. I used overgrips mainly for economic reasons, but nowadays their prices have gone up so much that you are not really saving that much money. I take an unconventional approach. I buy the smallest grip size (4 1/4" or size 2) and add a base grip on top of the original. I just wind this second grip a bit tighter to thin it out and to also preserve the edges of the handle. In addition, the second grip I use is a contour type, which ignores sweat and is extremely durable. It lasts so long and stays effective for so long that it saves me money in the long run vs overgrips. It just increases the grip size by 1, which I am okay with. Another benefit for me is that it adds weight to the racquet, about 20 grams. Because this added weight is at the handle, it will increase the swingweight, but not by a crazy amount. In fact, it is desired. Overall, my racquet still weighs less than the pro staff RF, but has similar plow through and stability. Your mileage may vary, but it has been a game changer for me.

      I think you need about 4 extra overgrips to achieve 1 size up. Replacement grips are about 3 times thicker than overgrips. In either cases you also mess up the raquet's original balance a bit. If you have head or technifibre you can buy for less than 10€ replacement pallets but you need a staple gun to properly install it. I did it with perfect result btw.

    Atheistic tape = game changer. Been doing this for years with just the crappy tape that comes with it. For the overgrip, who cares? I replace it so often I sometimes don’t even bother taping it at all, I use the rubber band thing on the handle. For the grip, it is so much raiser to get overgrip on/off if the tape below isn’t falling apart

    • @abokickel
      @abokickel 2 года назад

      Well they feel harder and you can feel the bevels better, even through and overgrip, which is a must with a leather grip. Leather grips also usually weight more so your racquet will become heavier and more head light.

  • @BorisBecker1872
    @BorisBecker1872 2 года назад

    You say that it’s absolutely necessary that one puts a replacement grip and not an overgrip on top of the pallet. Yet you also stated that some players do put just overgrips on top of the pallet to get that extreme edgy feel of the pallet. So which is it? Is it okay to just use an overgrip if one wants that “extreme edgy” feel of the pallet?

    • @IntuitiveTennis
      @IntuitiveTennis  2 года назад +2

      As I said in the video there’s a risk of getting blisters. Some players (minority) like the feel and build a tolerance (calluses). I don’t recommend.

    • @transamination
      @transamination 2 года назад +2

      One over-grip straight over the bare plastic handle will result in a small overall grip size (because there's no base replacement grip providing extra thickness). If you want that extreme edgy feel, either replace the original grip with a leather replacement grip (leather provides edgy shape) or buy a racquet one grip size larger than you need, remove the base grip, then apply over-grip directly to the handle. One grip-size bigger with grip removed and one over-grip applied will be same overall size as one grip size lower with original grip and over-grip.

    • @abokickel
      @abokickel 2 года назад +1

      They often use double overgrips. I do that too on some of my racquets. And if the bevel edges still feel too sharp, I just sandpaper them a bit. By doing this you can make the handle a bit smaller. But remember, if you replace your base grip + overgrip with two overgrips, the weight of the racquet will decrease quite a bit and the balance will change to less head light. It won't have such a drastic effect on the swing weight though.
