Legend has it that Phil Edwards always had control of his surfboard. Paddling out in big surf he goes slow. Then he is not tired when he gets to the wave impact zone so he can get through big surf. He had great wave instinct and he never lost his surfboard. No leashes or leg ropes those days.

I met Phil in Manhattan beach in the early seventies he very nice to me. He asked me about my surfing. I’ve met a lot of famous people that I don’t remember but I remember Phil Edwards
