Drag Race Italia Season 1 occupies a weird space in the World of Wonder lexicon. It's no one's least favorite season, by all means, but it's still ill-remembered (if it's remembered at all, that is) as one of the weirdest viewing experiences in the entire RuPaul Cinematic Universe.
From having multiple double shantays, to unprecedented disqualifications, to crowning a winner that never won a challenge, many people look back at this season and only recall chaos, surrealism and, in some cases frustration.
In this video, we'll discuss all those things: the winner Elecktra Bionic, the disqualification of Enorma Jean, that legendary untucked and, of course, that infamous host. With these details, I'll try my best to explain to you why I think this season, compared to all other seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race, is World of Wonder's biggest fever dream.

I really respect that ava not only stood up for herself, (which she was perfectly right to do especially since Priscilla isn’t the most beautiful drag queen ever herself) but also pointed out that it was disrespectful to truck drivers like she didn’t need to do that but she did and I really appreciate that

I remember when Elecktra did an interview, last year in... august?, about her future in drag, and she went candidly "Yeah, i was called for Canada Vs The World, but i still didn't evolve enough yet, and my english could use some polish too...", and CANvsTW's announcement happened 3-4 months later ☠☠☠

Right? I love all the seasons. I speak Spanish and love the Mexico and España franchises. In fact, Mexico as a country arguably has some of the most visually creative queens I’ve ever seen. Beyond just WOW and Drag Race, "La Más Draga" on RUclips is everything. The queens, the hosts, the judges, Yari Mejía… she’s everything! ❤️ Plus it has very long episodes because it’s on RUclips, and there aren’t the same limitations. Very long runways, judges’ critiques, etc. And extremely ornate looks. More intricate fashions than I’ve ever seen on any Drag Race season, anywhere.
I just need someone to validate me and point out how they destroyed Ivana Vamp on the stage because she wasn't funny in the branding challenge and she was supposed to be funny because she was fat and hence she was cast to have self-deprecating humor and excel at comedy challenges. Meanwhile Ivana was like "I'm not a comedy queen, my drag character is a rich, sexy woman always surrounded by men". This was on episode 2! Each episode kept blowing my mind in the worst ways possible.

As an italian speaker, it was very exciting to watch S1 of DRIT, even with it being the fever dream that you described in this video. S2 was, IMO, a very good season; actually, one of the best of 2022. And, if the alleged cast of S3 is true, I believe we’re in for one of the best international Drag Race seasons ever (unless production fucks it up, of course).

Can you please talk about the craziness of Drag Race Thailand’s format. I think the most important context for that season is that the episodes came out as it aired and the episodes actually did takes weeks to film, which is relevant for the disqualification of Miss Gimhuay, the returns of Kana Warrior & Kandy Zyanide. There’s also the queens who win and get eliminated in the same episode. Loved this video specifically bc I feel like no one else in my life watched this season so I was silently going crazy watching it back in 2021.
Ava had every right to be upset. "Camionista" is an outright insult, that often gets thrown around in Italy especially at women who are perceived to be 'too masculine' by being 'too big/muscly/having too many tattoos'. Drag Race should not endorse that sort of behaviour.
Also Enorma's altercation with production 100% happened
Honestly, Italia S1 is a camp masterpiece only few can appreciate :))
I unironically like it because of the talents those queens shown. Rafaella Carra's rusical was everything. I liked that the queens were expressive and willing to fight. The drama was explosive. It was said online that they disqualified Enorma because she said "porco dio" to one of the producers, which is a very offensive thing in Italy. Farida was shown as really bitchy and she had no support of the public. Everyone wanted Elecktra to win then. I think Elecktra is so talented and definitely was robbed of the challenge win.
Drag Race Italia is really important because political situation there is bad. The right wing government is taking the rights from LGBTQ people there and Drag Race Italia is one of the only shows there that supports them. I'm super exited for Season 3!!!

I get so happy when anyone online talks about either Drag Race Italia season because it reassures me that I didn't just dream up the whole thing after eating too much cheese before bedtime.
enorma's whole arc during the season was bizarre because it was clear that everyone on set more or less already hated her from the get go, then she proceeded to perform very well, and then... that whole thing. it was a whole weirdly entertaining rolleroaster but i did come out of it with her still being a favorite.
elecktra winning with no challenge wins is very iconic to me though. and about that, this may be a bit too speculative but i think the reason Farida lost is because production really, really didnt like her.

The thing i honestly loved was at the end, when all and i mean, all the people (chameras, etc) walking down the runway.

Also, gotta say regarding Enorma... What physical altercation? A producer got in her boundries while she was clearly upset and she took back her personal space... It does not take a rocket scientist to understand she does not want to be touched, especially by the people she attributed her blame to for her discomfort..
Exactly - that’s why I can only ~maybe~ understand her getting that lecture. It overall was just a disgusting and immature display from the producers and the judges.
One of the things you are missing about this episode is that Enorma Jean blasphemed. She said “dio porco”, god is a pig. In Italy, you’re legally not allowed to blaspheme. So they had to jettison her.
I think it's also worth talking about the positives of this season: the iconic vampire reveal of Farida on the makeover challange runway. Something never seen before. And she should have won the whole season just for that.

What would have made Season 1 better is if they had cast Obama and eliminated her on the first episode. Then the whole season would've been about Obama refusing to leave and trying to have her revenge against the judges. The finale is a lipsync for the crown to O Fortuna while Obama burst out of the ground while the judges scream in terror. Obama then proceed to crawl over the judges table and choke them with her 40 inch wig and becomes the new host of Drag Race Italia and also the winner of every season of Italia.

I'd argue that track record never truly mattered since season 1 when Nina lost to Bebe.
Well it has been said more than once why Electra won. There was no money for the winner. The big prize was a contract with MAC cosmetics for a line featuring the winner. Having Electra was the obvious choice for that. Apparently MAC pushed for Electra
I LOOOOVED this season when I watched it. Do I think it’s good? Absolutely not 💀 But it is just so FUNNY to experience. From only one person being eliminated until the fourth episode, to the LS for your behavior, to Elecktra winning, it’s just HILARIOUS. Stan Luquisha Lubamba 🧔🏻♀️

Being Italo-Canadese, I was so excited for this series. Season 1 of DRIt is one of my faves, mainly for the sheer CHAOS. It is so entertaining, and Italian drag is absolutely incredible. DRIt 1 & 2 are in my top fave seasons, and I'm looking forward to Season 3!
I personally have a soft spot for the first season and love the queens we had on Drag Race Italia in both seasons, I live in Italy and the production is kinda wild so I agree that it was chaotic asf but they gave us a little bit of queer media that this country desperately needs

I remember thinking that Priscilla just got mad that Ava didn't agree with her opinion, because there really wasn't any other reason, based on what we saw, for her to do that with Ava, and that made me look at her sideways. I went from being annoyed that Italia was lackluster and the episodes were unnecessarily huge, to being mad and dropping the show.
But the lipsync songs tho. They are incredible! I had very little information about Italian pop culture, and now I have Raffaella Carrá and Donatella Rettore on my playlists. The Kobra lipsync was everything!

As an Italian I am a bit disappointed that most of the references were of decades ago.
The second season is much better, with still a bit of questionable judging but a lot more enjoyable.
As an Italian and long-time Drag Race fan the only thing I can say about DR Italia is that it seems made by people who have heard about Drag Race but never actually watched it.
Thanks for this! I watched Italia 1 in real time and I remember the fight episode and all the crazy stuff you remember. I also remember being baffled about why Lakisha kept getting saved, and why Farida was ultimately denied the win. It made no sense to me at the time at all. I too think Electra is gorgeous and makes a beautiful winner but I remember thinking that they passed Farida over because she isn’t as classically beautiful as Electra, and they wanted their first winner to be the most beautiful contestant they had. Still, I have recommended that folks watch Italia 2 because you’re right. They turned the ship around and the second season was much better. I’d love to hear your views on drag race Belgium. They had a front runner I thought they dumped too early. Anyway, keep them coming!
I personally enjoyed watching this season. I paid no mind to the mistakes made and questionable judging but focused on the talent of the cast. Farida Kant runways were the best of any season.

Italia Season 1 was really the girl of delusion land. At the time i was super into intl seasons and was trying to understand the cultural references etc so i was in a lot of the country specific drag race Twitter. Some of the fights in untucked were so wacky and not at all understandable that i asked a lot of Italians in case i missed sth, and even they were like "girl the edit was crazy even we didn't understand where this fight came from, how it started and why they're doing the things they're doing" 😅 to me that's camp

I'm Italian and I was so excited when they announced DR for my country. I already went into it not liking one of the judges on the panel ( the ex big brother winner, a gay man who was seen being friendly with our toxic prime minister who is anti abortion and homophobic), I still got the streaming service just to see it. The way the cast was treated so poorly and the biggest mental breakdown I think I've ever seen on TV from a reality tv contestant, I could go on.
Unfortunately I still don't think DR has had a mainstream impact in Italy outside the gay community like US drag race has had. It won't until DR Italia is showed on TV instead of just the discovery + streaming service, which nobody has.
The producers must have been on shrooms the entire time, there’s no other explanation to the CHOICES that were made.
Still, the only thing that makes the season hard to watch is the length of the episodes imo, the chaos was kinda entertaining.
Season 2 was a very good season, I really hope S3 will keep the momentum going

I loved so much that Electra Bionic won, because she did really good in every episode and killed the finale, I like the finale to be a fair opportunity to every queen and not just a ceremony to crown the queen with the best track record.

As an italian, I'm weirdly proud of this season. The chaos, the drama, it all felt very authentic to our scene, and seeing performers I watched in my local scene as a recently out gay boy competing on RPDR really resonated with me.
and what I like about Drag Race Italia is that they invite queens from surrounding country’s to. Next season has a queen from Bosnia allegedly

Elektra Bionic was a Wallet-Winner, a winner that won because of runways she only paid and didnt even design. Same as Krystal Versace in the same era. No bigger merits than looking good on the runway, in demerit to talented queens who couldn't afford the flashy, blingy stuff and got left behind. She's also a very generic winner from the Drag Race era: I don't see how Italia's Drag is represented on her more than on Krystal Versace let's say. There are other unique queens with unique points of view that add something new to the Drag Race lanscape, and while Elektra was always impecable she didnt tell a new story or brought a new point of view. She just looked good in Drag Race standars, according to outside designers that know how to design for that runway.

Season 1 is still my least favourite season of all franchises. It DID feel like a fever dream, and the episodes being 1.5h made it worst. However, Season 2 is one of my favourites. I did not expect that at all!

With a personal interview with both Ava and Farida (ciao ame ❤) in a podcast (which is a public source) - Non È La Race - that me and two other persons held a while back, it has to be said that the whole situation was poorly handled and there is huuuge gaps on storytelling and editing.
By the interviews, we know that Ava was upset and that the footage shown is just an extract of the conversation, which was kinda more heated in full.
When it comes to Enorma, what we know is that compared to the rest of the cast, she had been the most "competitive" of the bunch in multiple ways, something that in certain moments has rubbed all the other girls in the wrong way. This partially lead Enorma to have her reaction to the whole situation.
Farida, instead, told in our interview that she was upset by the critiques given by Priscilla, defining her as cocky. This was not (obviously) taken very well by Farida (which in conversation we definitely agreed being the absolute opposite of cocky!), hence her part of the conversation with Enorma.
So yeah, this whole moment made no sense even for italian speakers cuz it is a cut and paste of a lot of things with very little to almost no logic sense 😅

I actually really hated this season. Happy tho Elektra is not the only non maxi challenge winner thanks to Rajah. But Avas treatment is sooooooo dumb.
Enorma and Ava were made to lipsync to avoid disqualification because they both swore by "cursing God" while arguing, which is illegal to do on TV in Italy.
Enorma spilled this after the season from memory; she was posting on places such as Instagram and Reddit about her experience.
I watched this season in the past few weeks, and I remember that scene was there, I don't know if I can see it because of where I live, but it was pretty intense, didn't know it was considered lost media
20:37 While I very much don’t agree with Ava’s first lipsync in episode 4, I believe she’s gone on record and said it was because she called god a pig on camera 💀 Blasphemies to my knowledge are illegal to air on television in Italy, and contestants getting disqualified for them is a fairly common occurrence over there, so it’s less the anger towards the critique being the reason, moreso the blasphemy comment. Because they have the liberty of not being live, she didn’t need to be disqualified, but that seems to be the real reason for the lipsync there

The irony... Priscilla calling Ava a truck driver for being too masculine and butch, yet Priscilla herself is a brick. And then when she was called out on instagram, she blocked everyone who had a negative comment. But to be fair, this season had potential.

As someone who didn't watch this as it aired and still hasn't (but will at some point) this season sounded like a fever dream. The only upside I guess is this season definitely had people talking about the show.

Another example to support this argument about this "lipsync for disqualification" dilutes the consequences is Holland season 2, which also to my opinion was the nail on the coffin of that franchise. They should've disqualified Vivaldi but instead made her lipsync and then saved her, even when all the contestants said she should be punished!!!! The franchises really should take this disqualification discussion seriously and either do it or not talk about it at all
Thank for this video. "Drag Race Italia" was unhinged. Mera Mangle refused to watch the second season (which was slightly better but still messy in some ways, including one of the worst main challenges ever).
I thought the Snatch Game was yet another element that made Italia S1 super chaotic, when they had the celebrity guest impersonator come on and proceeded to take up half the screen time. I did not get the humour and found it completely unnecessary as it took so much of the focus away from the queens.

Honestly the thing with Elektra was that she could’ve won so many of the challenges she was safe in but they didn’t give the wins to her they gave em to Enorma or Divinity who they both sent home anyway, on the flip side of things, the finale fully won her the season
