Hmm why US as it is basically the weopon of choice for the police force. Ok they are known as police batons...but it is actually a tonfa. I remember ordering us police style batons for my policemen buddy here in Germany who trained back then in our dojo alther back then in the 90s they where against the law here in Germany
Yes it was adopted by many police forces. I was thinking specifically within martial arts competition. It is not performed as often as the Bo, nunchaku, and Kama.
I kinda doubt it would be that deadly but it would hurt a lot to get smacked around with them tho the police model is designed to not be deadly it’s a little flexible to have more give (so you don’t go around obliterating jay walkers)
You are like one of the highest quality martial art channels, you teach a balance of techniques, philosophy and history of Karate. I’m so glad I got to find this channel
This is a great video, thanks for uploading! I got my black belt in Tonfa a number of years back and it's awesome to revisit Hamahiga No Tonfa and see it in actual practice! The only thing that disappointed me about my study of Tonfa is that there were literally only two katas I was taught. I hope I can get back in and discover new ones some day!
Many years ago I played a game that had the main Hero of the story use these exact weapons. I was in awe of how unique and cool they looked. Thank you for helping me revisit this memory.
These have always been my favorite weapon. I actually made lightsaber tonfa, because I am also a star wars need, out of PVC. Thank you again for your help
My favorite Enkamp video! The Hama Higa I learned has identical kihon but different sequence, and a few moves are also in Geksai, another tonfa kata.. I will suggest to my sensei that we get those pads to practice the bunkai. One kihon you missed: You can grip the tonfa by its long end and use the handle as a hook for groin, neck, limb, or opponent’s weapon (as with sai).
I leared tonfa in police training befote i started karate still my favorite weapon blocks hookes pins is a amazong wrapon... Thank you for this you are indeed a inspiration
I’m so glad you posted this! I’m researching how to size and select my tonfa. I’m able to start learning how to use them this summer after I get my Red Belt in Tang Soo Do! I’m excited, but my master told me they hurt and I’m probably not going to like them. I’m just hoping to learn as many weapons as possible. I don’t want to have the knowledge die. My master might be one of the few traditional teachers left in this generation. Soaking up as much as possible! Tang Soo! ( bowing 🥋❤️ )
Jesse Enkamp really is just a martial arts genius. The fact he can perform near flawlessly and remember all of these unique katas with and without different weapons is just incredible. My previous little karate dojo only had us focus on 10 primary kata and today I can only remember about 4 all the way through! I did shift to mma for a few years so kata was of course not in the training so some my form has gone a bit.
Unfortunately i stopped going to karate training here in south africa teachers are not humble only after money dont care about students its sad you sir keep my hopes up for maybe to find a sensei like you one day you are indeed a model how a sensei should be
i am searching how to train with a tonfa since i bought one for the police from second hand....and i found the karate nerd already teaching people how to use it...now i see i need 2 of them....
Hi I have been doing this kata since the early 1980 so about 40 years and liked you form, although I pause in different places. Very nice and great location. Was in Okinawa last year and visited Kumojima to visit Taura Sensei ' birth place and memorial.
Enkamp Sensei, you are a bad ass with those Tonfa. I have made 5 sets of these for black belts in our dojo and working on my set now. Very excited about putting these drills into practice. Keep up the good work! Brian
I actually commented on one of your previous videos to make a video on how to use a Tonfa, and I didn't expect to see this video uploaded. Thank you very much 🤣😁🥋
Thank you for this video! トンファー (Tonfa) is one of my favorite Kobudo weapons! A while back When you made how to use the Sai, I asked if you would make a video on the Tonfa, thank you so much for coming through!
Outstanding video. Great explanation of the moves and its nice how you take the kata slowly and step by step then repeat it from the beginning. That is how I learned the upper katas as they became more involved. Once again, Good job.
This was awesome!!! I always thought of tonfas as an ordinary mall security stuff 😂. I was wrong at all, and this video showed so much more about tonfas that I couldn't imagine ✨️👏🥋⛩️❤ Thanks Jesse for this
Hmm, interesting kihon exercise. The same drill is also used with the sword. Eight direction cut, ending with "tsuki". The same is also done with nunchaku.
Hi Jesse, I'm happy that you made this video ! I'm still having fun witch the zaï since your lost video ! BTW I received my Seichin gi today... Can't wait to use it very soon !
Watching these videos makes me wish there was someone who would do similar but to Taekwondo. The more I watch your videos the more I want to switch to Karate.
Tonfa gets my vote as the most effective blunt personal weapon. Hits like a truck, versatile attacks, solid protection, high retention. If only it were convenient to carry!
This video came in perfect time since today I signed up for karate lessons at my local dojo that also teaches kobudo. Super interested about starting kobudo too at some point! Next I wanna see videos about sai or bo!

can I ask what the name of the book will be? Or if you've published it, I've been looking for a book with a tonfa user
