  • Summer, around 1905:
    A Swansea photographer takes his camera out onto the streets to record his town.
    This is what he saw.

    Mistake the ever made was closing the Swansea and Mumbles railway. It would have made a brilliant tourist attraction today, and perhaps even expanded.

    Looks way better over 100 years ago than it does now, looks absolutely beautiful and sometimes I'm sure I was born in the wrong era.

      I walked through there today, it’s dirty and looks desperate.
      A shadow of its former self.
      Swansea City Council should hold there heads in shame.

      It's sadly true. I lived there for 33 years and saw it change from 'an ugly lovely town into a pretty shitty city'. Its nice to frequent from time to time but only to see loved ones and go to the Gower

    • @rehabwales
      @rehabwales 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@TS-bn7zt It looks dirty in these pictures too. I'm pretty sure the air was toxic back then as well. The rose tinted glasses can't change the fact that there was so much heavy industry in the lower swansea valley that life expecancy was very much lower than now.

    A wonderful compilation. The only disappointment is the fact that there are no images of Ben Evans store. It is advertised on several shots of trams but not shown in all its glory. However, overall, a great compilation. Sadly, the architects from the German Luftwaffe redesigned Swansea during the 3 night blitz and now we are left with too many 4 storey Corbussian rectangles. In or near the town centre, the Mond Building, the old Carlton Cinema building and Mount Pleasant Baptist chapel, and the old police station are still extant. They give us some indication of how grand Swansea was in the late Victorian and Edwardian era.

      try to find some of those old post-cards from the 60s and 70s (I used to collect them as a kid) and you will see Swansea in a whole new light: it WAS a very, very pretty town, especially around the Castle in the town centre. While I try not to indulge in Council-bashing too much, it has to be said, Swansea has had a lot of bad luck with the decisions made by its councils over the last 50 odd years. Remember however: Swansea Council is Elected by its populace...so...you know...a society gets the government it deserves...!
