Nurses at Swansea General and Eye Hospital in the 1920s
At West Glamorgan Archives we found a box of glass slides: they were taken in the 1920s to show the work of the Swansea General and Eye Hospital. Beautifully shot, they showcase the working lives of the nurses and auxiliary staff. We made this film using them.

1908 Olympics - how the torch relay through Swansea might have been
Просмотров 5 тыс.12 лет назад
There was no torch relay in the build-up to the first London Olympics in 1908, but if there had been, this is how today's route through Swansea and Mumbles would have looked.

The sound of the Police Station clock at the beginning….
Thankyou for this. I grew up in the 60s and knew that Swansea had been bombed and much of it was new but its quite sobering and very interesting to see what went before .
I know that boy with the bike, Owen his name was Owen Williams, I used to be in school with him.
The promised land Top of the World ❤️❤️
So called home's built for hero's . Whilst the rich and their familie's lived in luxury. And didn't realise the war war was going on .
One of my friends told me how he lost his dad and brother in this blitz of Swansea 😢
That is absolutely brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing this.
This brings so much sadness. I was in Swansea recently. What a shithole. I won’t say why as I’ll get cancelled and arrested by the CPS.
What staggers me most is how busy it was! Now its like a ghost town!
You'll be hard pressed to find an 'asbestos depot' these days!
Ceri foxy Farrel top man
Brilliant thank you
Who built all these amazing buildings ?
.
Let there be white. The shining light, of Swansea.
looked so clean.
My late mother would tell us kids all about the blitz , she was only 12. With 5 brothers to take care of.
My mother was 11 yrs old during the blitz...she passed away in 2014.
It's weird to think but everyone in the world then are all dead that's mad the whole planet died
Lol and they all wore silly hats !
Yep we have gone backwards Swansea shops boarded up
From my time in Swansea 1982-1994 two memories of Townhill stand out: 1. driving lessons. It was ideal for practising hill-starts 2. Playing football at Paradise Park on a windy day
Looks way better over 100 years ago than it does now, looks absolutely beautiful and sometimes I'm sure I was born in the wrong era.
You might not have lived to the age you are now if you were.......think yourself lucky you didn't die of an infected tooth or something! lol
@Dave Parvin I've nearly died of an infected tooth recently so not much difference 😆
@@thomasbrannigan9319 hahahaha, Jesus. Firstly, I'm glad you're ok! Secondly, thats some bloody coincidence isn't it?? Damn lol Finally, I think you got my gist!
@@thomasbrannigan9319Thats being said. I would give anything to spend a few days walking around Swansea as it was back then!
@Dave Parvin what are the odds? 😆 and thanks buddy I'm all good now 👍
A wonderful compilation. The only disappointment is the fact that there are no images of Ben Evans store. It is advertised on several shots of trams but not shown in all its glory. However, overall, a great compilation. Sadly, the architects from the German Luftwaffe redesigned Swansea during the 3 night blitz and now we are left with too many 4 storey Corbussian rectangles. In or near the town centre, the Mond Building, the old Carlton Cinema building and Mount Pleasant Baptist chapel, and the old police station are still extant. They give us some indication of how grand Swansea was in the late Victorian and Edwardian era.
Looking at these makes me a bit sad :/
Looked so much better then, it’s like Syria here now, thanks Swansea council 🖕
Hahaha. You have clearly never been to such a country!
Don't you think the Luftwaffe had a lot to do with it.
wish i could see how my street locked back in the days. the closets picture i saw was st helens road only
Brought back many memories. I lived in Powys Gardens from Nov 1956 to Feb 1965 when I joined the Army aged 17.
Mistake the ever made was closing the Swansea and Mumbles railway. It would have made a brilliant tourist attraction today, and perhaps even expanded.
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing photos of our past in Swansea, recognise their modern areas,
I have lived in Swansea my whole life it was so pretty in these pictures not anymore we must have the worst council in Britain they really are rubbish
these are just a few snapshots and don't provide the full picture whatsoever
try to find some of those old post-cards from the 60s and 70s (I used to collect them as a kid) and you will see Swansea in a whole new light: it WAS a very, very pretty town, especially around the Castle in the town centre. While I try not to indulge in Council-bashing too much, it has to be said, Swansea has had a lot of bad luck with the decisions made by its councils over the last 50 odd years. Remember however: Swansea Council is Elected by its populace...so...you know...a society gets the government it deserves...!
Utter nonsense. All your comment tells me is that you haven't traveled much
I think people then were hard has nails..
Looks like an absolute shithole now.,.
Some very recognisable places here and it's the 80th anniversary in a few days, in fact. But we are still living with some of that awful 1950s architecture, sadly.
Amazing
Fyi that's not just Townhill its Mayhill as well !
Swansea looked a lovely place some lovely buildings. Not no more.
Oddly most of the main building depicted are still here.
We lost a lot of nice buildings in ww2
I walked through there today, it’s dirty and looks desperate. A shadow of its former self. Swansea City Council should hold there heads in shame.
It's sadly true. I lived there for 33 years and saw it change from 'an ugly lovely town into a pretty shitty city'. Its nice to frequent from time to time but only to see loved ones and go to the Gower
@@TS-bn7zt It looks dirty in these pictures too. I'm pretty sure the air was toxic back then as well. The rose tinted glasses can't change the fact that there was so much heavy industry in the lower swansea valley that life expecancy was very much lower than now.
As a local I can still recognise these places. Some changed beyond recognition but others hardly at all.
My grandfather had a shop in Townhill - he was offered to buy houses on Graiglwyd Rd for £400 each when they first went up
Can't get a door for that kind of money these days
Lovely glimpse into the past.
Wow, I didn't realise the houses at Townhill were so old. Thought they were built in the 50's or 60's for some reason. Great film.
i was born in june 2011 2 but my school was here in 1924
I went to The Gregg in townhill
@@charlie27203 my schools name is townhill community school
I enjoyed the video very much. Had to turn the volume off as the piano was quite annoying. The music was to powerful for the video. Many thanks .
That was great, thanks. I live on Pantycelyn road, right by the college (training center). Ive noticed many of the houses have a carved stone, on the gable, or between the top windows. Mainly celtic knots that seem to be coiled snakes, and weird columns with a rising sun on top. Freemason symbols I think
A great film - very well put together. Do you have any photo's of Cockett/Cockett Wood park and the surrounding estate?
If only Swansea looked like that today :(
