- I love the dismount 😂
This was one of the craziest things to happen to me during a meet.
Cramping during my routine potentially cost me $11,000 of national team stipend money.

$22k/year to be on the National men’s gymnastics team? Did I hear that right
A lot of Olympians (mostly in other sports where you train a bit less) work multiple jobs or are on welfare.
The USA does not really financially support athletes, nor does it pay well for Olympic medals like many other countries do.
Gymnastics is an extremely expensive sport, so it's extra hard on athletes.
@@2755_Ishycakesmy aunt played on the US Olympic volleyball team for nearly 10 years and I remember the sacrifices her and her husband made. Financially, it was hard on them but the biggest sacrifice IMO was sweets. At family gatherings, they would smell the desserts to satisfy their cravings but didn’t eat any. Her first year after retiring from the Olympic team, she was so happy to be able to eat sweets again. Lol. They both still talk about how amazing the experience was and how they’d do it again if they had the choice.
@@2755_Ishycakesteam USA doesn’t pays as well as other countries bc they win a lot of medals, countries like Estonia, Malaysia or Latvia who barely win any medals pay more but still a gold medal for the US pays around 37K
Luckily bro has 800k followers so hes probably not hurting for money
My dad was on the Canadian national rowing team and made nothing. We essentially had nothing at the time lol
That's so disappointing and frustrating. I have a bacterial throat infection which is causing me to miss my peak swim meet of the season. I love hearing your stories in this format!
I'm glad you mentioned your compensation on national team. It's not highlighted enough in my option. As a high level gymnast noone really talked about the career path and sacrifice. Would be cool to add finances to this blog for folks to learn about what they are pursuing
Thankyou for being so transparent about your sport career
This basically happened to me at a nationals too, for a different sport. This made me feel so much better about it. Thanks for making this video.
That's sounds horrible. Sorry you had to go through that.
Out of curiosity, now that you've graduated from Stanford, do you still compete with them for a bit in the summer? I see you still hang out with your college teammates so I'm not sure. Or maybe you just post shorts in random order?
Still impressive as hell, and something you just can't win. Thanks for sharing this video, because the perseverance to finish a routine is incredible even tho you didn't make the team
Please post your workout (not gymnastic routines, though) regimen. Thank you and good luck with your future endeavors.
That is a really good score
It is heart breaking when your body betrays you 😢
You guys should be paid much more. What you do it's amazing and so hard
Never knew that watching something like that would be so interesting 😂
Ouch! Tough to hear that but congratulations. You would not have made it that far if you were one of the best in the country.
so question i just saw a video you made about why the bar is made of steel and in it you mention womens bar is made from wood and fiberglass because the on average dont do as strenuios bends a nd grabs as men do but that implies that they do on occasion what happend if a women or men break the bar bmid perfomance ?
They replace it and they finish there set or whatever they call it
*strenuous
OOf, hope you'll get back on the team and your arms get better again
2:48 All you need is calcium gluconate... One vial to drink 35 to 45 min before your routine and you are safe... Was just a lack of calcium in your muscles.
Hydrate yourself correctly man, and drink a glass of water with apple cider vinegar
Isn’t this the guy that breaks the equipment after ever set?
ian, i am just some idiot on internet, so take this with grain of salt and disregard if must, but my idea is that this was caused by a imbalance in forearm muscles, leading to a lack in wrist stability in certain ranges of motion.
basically, in men's gymanstic there are apparatus where pretty much everyone these days trains with grips, which mess up your hands ability to feel the apparatus, and thus reduces the forearm engagement a lot.
i am not a doctor or a physio or sports med or anything as such, but i am guessing by the way your forearm cramp presented on the salute, with an extreme involuntary pronated flexion, that it was a hypercontraction on the forearm wrist flexion muscles.
the reason for cramps like these is usually a muscle being overworked and overextended beyond its ability to stabilize the joint, and this overexertion leads to an involuntary hypercontraction which feels painful, particularly common in strength based sports.
when men's gymnasts do parallel bars and pommel horse, they don't use grips, and thus get the full level of training in their hands when it comes to side to side deviations (pbar) and rotations from pronate to supinate (pommel horse).
but, and here's where my thoughts can get controversial, on the high bar and especially on the rings, the fact that pretty much all modern male gymanst use leather grips, means that the flexion and extension ability of the wrist joint is simply not trained, and this lack of ability really can hamper your efforts on the other apparatus such as pbars, because now you have a wrist which is weak in certain ranges of motion and stronger in others, leading to instability, leading to the weak muscle overexerting and cramping up.
not only that, but the hands and fingers themselves have muscles in them that are completely taken out of the equation and left untrained when we use grips on these apparatus which train the hands the most, specifically high bar, and especially the rings.
i am not going to say just ditch grips, instead an easy solution would just be to do a lot of wrist mobility and strengthening work, especially in the ranges of motion in which you are weak.
remember, to stabilize a joint during our work, essentially all of the muscles which have action at that joint will be working simultaneously.
if you have a weak link in there, joint stability is simply not possible.
good luck man, god bless you, and god bless gymanstics.
You didn't lose it, you missed out on it.
Hey, I love your videos. I would love to see your reaction to Epke Zonderland‘s high bar routine in the Olympic Games 2012. You know from a gymnast‘s perspective
Now I'm wondering how someone can get such cramp on this level... Don't you get nutritionist in the team 😱😶
Cramp can happen for many reasons... Even with the greatest nutritionist in the world NBA players get cramps. LeBron has gotten cramp in finals games it can happen to anyone
Watching you doing that first routine I would not try again ,imagine if you failed handstand and lands on your head 😮
Ahhhh so unlucky for that to happen on comp day!
Such is life.
EAT A BANANA YOU NEED POTASSIUM WHENEVER YOU GET CRAMPS
I feel so bad
Oh god GUNTHY!
What-
The GUNTHY lost 11K on a cramp. Ugh Can’t you read
tf🤣
well, you looked good doin it
Low electrolytes can cause muscle cramping, something to keep in mind in the future just in case!
I'm a gymnast too. I also made to state championships and on my way to 2024 Olympics!!
That must’ve been so disappointing! Maybe all you need was to hang from a bar for a few minutes and just stretch it out
Ouch! Must of hurt
Are you still able to try for Olympic trials next year even though you aren't on the national team currently?
Aww man! That sucks
Good job at core meet
So frustrating! I'm glad you were able to finish the meet on a high note.
How did you get rid of the cramp?
He explained how he got rid of it.
Hmmm. My muscle cramps last a long time so I thought maybe he had some trick to help him that might help me besides continuing on...
Omg slay so amazing how you powered threw
Wait what? Paid to be on a gymnastics team?
NATIONAL gymnastic team, underpaid af tbh
@@vollkornkeks9177 And you're not even paid - you're compensated with a stipend worth that money.
13.85 is a point over my start value
Still did great
omg so slay😱😱

How would you rank your events from favorite to least? If you've done a video on it, my bad! 😅

Awh man
Somebody skipped his stretching sessions… (joke)
is this american medical bills?! What the fuck
pretty much. i'm dealing with a 1600$ bill from the ER for some antibiotics for a back cyst that ruptered the night before i went to the ER. bitches didnt even have to clean it out, this is what they charged me for walking in, waiting 2 hours to be seen, and getting some antibiotics.

No, it's a lost stipend. Watch the video.

You’ll get the 11000 back many times.
why is it atheltes today just keep ignoring nutrition, especially when it comes to homeostasis maintainence?
what did you eat or drink the night before or an hour before your routine ? did you have a coffee or anything highly processed?
Did you not figure out that you'd need to balance your magnesium and electrolytes, even in your resting phase and try and flush yourself full of it?
Yoo i am pretty shure non of the national team coaches thought of Magnesium before! Maybe apply as a nutrition coach! You seem super knowkedgeable!!
@@Magienionar thanks for the kind words, but i am happy and well paid enough in my current profession in research -- as an aside, the nutritionists or coach may or may not have taught and/or reminded tje athlètes to mind their body chemistry, it is still up to the athletes to keep to it-- even water or lack thereof can be an issue, where the water is stored across your physiology is also of different composition, and so to be mindful for the sake of optimum performance is essential.
why are you so presumptuous?
@@orpheus1667 my presumptions are not baseless, he stipulated his cramps which could have been avoided -- with alittle bit of oversight and prepped. it is in no way derisive nor mean, rather i am frustrated by his loss because that sponsored position that he has lost is hard to get. why are you being so reactively judgemental?
@@kw271 You're assuming a lot of professional care and detailed nutrition in a sport where being the best in America nets you slightly less than full-time entry-level janitorial work.
You uhh....didn't make the National team this past summer at Nationals either. Maybe lay off the social media all the time?? I dunno🤷♂️🤷♂️
Wow im sure you know all about how much he has been slacking behind the camera
@@lovefrequency1111 meh not really. Social media is a massive distraction in any area of life. Whether it's a career, school, training for the Olympics like he is ^^^. Trying to create content as often as he does has got to get in the way of things after a while. I stayed off social media when I was a competitive gymnast/college gymnast but everyone is different I guess🤷♂️🤷♂️
@@mattr3922 the stuff he creates is definitely not affecting his career. There are limits to what the human body can do and it needs breaks, so he’s likely editing these clips during his down time. If anything, it might push him to do more complex and creative stuff because, let’s be honest, RUclips and social media at large is incredibly critical and is insatiable for unique things, so he needs to come up with a lot of new stuff
This is the dumbest comment I've seen, how is social media, something that he does in his own time, affecting his training and performance?
The RUclips money probably means he's in a better position to train in gymnastics than if he was, for example, working in Amazon or as an Uber driver.
