Having constructed the Trojan Horse, Odysseus had ensured victory against all odds and proved his reputation as the most cunning of the Greeks. But throughout it all, Odysseus only longed for one thing, to finally return to his homeland of Ithaca where he could be reunited with his wife and son. However, while his family awaited his return, Odysseus’ journey home would take 10 long years, during which he and his crew would have to face the most terrifying creatures known to man. A journey so epic, its tale would be told for thousands of years. This is his story.

@@anniemes20 BECAUSE ITS FUCKING CRIMINAL NOT TO MENTION ARGOS
Thank you, my unknown friend! This was my dearest missing piece! As for me, in history class last week, when my classmates showed images of the sirens and Circe, I was the only one coming up with a depiction of Odysseus and that old loyal dog, looking eachother in the eye with love.
Argos, the goodest boy.
In the old story that my Yia Yia (grandmother) gave me Argos never dies and he lives happily with Odysseus and his family

Love how this entire story is basically “dude i just wanna go home”
The Odyssey" is an epic poem that tells the story of a legendary Greek hero named Odysseus, who goes on a crazy adventure to get back home after fighting in the Trojan War. On his way back, he faces all sorts of challenges, including fighting monsters, dealing with angry gods, and navigating treacherous seas. Along the way, he meets all kinds of interesting characters and makes some loyal friends, like the beautiful sorceress Circe and the Cyclops Polyphemus. Meanwhile, back at home, his wife Penelope is trying to hold things together and ward off a group of suitors who want to marry her and take over Odysseus' kingdom. It's a story about bravery, perseverance, loyalty, and the power of cleverness and wit to overcome even the toughest obstacles.amonus
@@idontknow4160 i know that? Ive watched tha video and read the book. Whats the point of this comment?
@@lunarking29 well it's a written summarisation of the video, not totally pointless but at the same time without direction indeed. Funny
@Lunar king how rude bra, who cares you read and listen... hell it's a million others didnt...selfish ass statement...
😂😂😂😂😂
I need to add that Circe only turned Odysseus's men into pigs because they had their eyes on her gold and body, so Circe added a spell to their wine turn them into their true form. Also Hermes is Odysseus's grandfather or great grandfather I believe.
good to know the context
It’s crazy how Hermes just let that happen.
25 minutes is not nearly enough time to summarize the Odyssey. As a Greek who grew up with this story and its brother (the Iliad) as bedtime stories, you forgot to mention one of my favourite moments in the epic.
When all the suitors are dead, Penelope is still not convinced that the man before her is her husband. Can you blame her? The man had freakin Athene by his side, a literal goddess, disguising him with her divine powers. So, intelligent and crafty as Penelope was, she asked Odysseus a trick question, to see if he was truly who he claimed to be.
She asked him if he could move their bed. Hearing this, Odysseus started weeping. You see, the bed of the King & Queen of Ithaca was a bed that Odysseus himself made as a wedding gift to his wife when they got married. This bed is unmovable, because the top right bedpost is not actually a bedpost - it is a whole freaking olive tree. He fashioned and crafted the bed as an extension of that tree, making the Royal Chambers a true sight to behold, what with having a full grown olive tree slap-bang in the middle of the room.
He tells her "My wife, how can you possibly ask me to do that? I cannot, that would destroy our bed." And that's when she believed he was who he was claiming to be. Only Odysseus himself would know the history behind that bed.
damn. Thank you for reminding me of that scene. I read that book a hundred times and more as a child.
I guess it's time to read it once again. Thank you
The videos were not meant for people who the story inside out, simple as that…
The Odyssey is in essence a theological text featuring a soul looking its way back "home", meaning its destination of knowing itself. The adventures on this way back, are the temptations and hubris the soul can fall victim of.
Odysseus: I love my wife
Also Odysseus: *has a child with Circe*
Which eventually killed him

Amazing job. I really wish you would have also added the part where Odysseus is recognized by his old maid and, of course, his dog Argos, who died right after meeting him.
yes, argos dying is the only part of this story that makes me cry
@@funkychild550 he fulfilled his dogish destiny. He saw his master one last time.
Argos lived an insanely long life. The Trojan War lasted 10 years, Odysseus' travels lasted another 10. Argos was an adult dog before Odysseus left to fight with Agamemnon, Achilles, Ajax and the rest of the boys in Troy. That would make Argos at least 25 years old.
It has been theorized that some divine intervention took place to allow Argos to live till 25+ years old. Probably Artemis, goddess of the hunt and protector of nature and wildlife took pity on the lone dog and blessed it with enough life force to see his master one last time. As soon as Argos set eyes on Odysseus, the blessing wore off, his destiny being fulfilled.
Argos? Is that name of man who built ship for Jason, and Argonauts
I gotta give Athena respect for helping Odysseus get his happy-ever-after story
The wise always respect Athene...
@@RichWoods23 even after what she did to medusa ?
@@_marshy1899 you don't understand the story very well didn't you? She transformed medusa into a horrible creature in order to protect herself she can't fight her brother Poseidon and instead she chooses to sacrifice Medusa's beauty into a killing machine. Then he let Perseus to slay medusa to freed her from loneliness and suffering, Perseus then put her head to the shield and return it to athena to honor the priestess.
@@segebergbarchewitz6362 also that part of the myth was created by Ovid ( a Roman) who hated authority and took it out on the myth of the gods. Medusa was born of monster parents… the only mortal out of her sisters the Gorgons. So this story you speak of “never” happened.
At least his story didn't end up like Jason lol.
I really enjoy these vids the channel puts out. My only criticism is they shouldn't limit themselves to certain time constraints, such as "(Subject) in 30 Minutes". Take as much time as needed to cover all the necessary details and I'll watch every second of it!
Yes!
I understand BUT I only watched this vid because it was under 30mins
I think he creates the video, and then titles it based on how long it ended up being. Not the other way around
But you are a Rare Case, Most People on RUclips have the Attention Span of a May Fly.
Meh. Im not gonna watch a 2 hour vid on the odyssey. If u want that then watch a university lecture
I’m pretty sure he doesn’t really constraint himself in the time length he wrote in his title, pretty sure he wrote the title after the video was finished :) like, every title has a different time length lol
For a guy that sits around eating donuts this Homer guy could really cook up a story or two
doh
The effort in these videos do not go unnoticed. Easily my favorite history channel on RUclips. So so good
I remember reading this in 8th grade and thinking how badass Odysseus. Especially at the end when he re-strings the bow and kill everyone. They Odyssey will forever be in my top five stories ive ever read.
I hate homer
Simpson? 🤭😋
Thank you for your video. Regarding 10:14, for those who are unfamiliar, Circe was the sister of Pasiphae who was the wife of Minos, the King of Crete. Queen Pasiphae copulated coitus more ferarum with the Cretan Bull that was sent by Poseidon to Minos as a sacrificial gift. Thus Pasiphae became the mother of the infamous Minotaur. Furthermore Circle and Pasiphae were the aunts of Medea who was Princess of Colchis. Medea eloped with Jason who absconded with the Golden Fleece and fled with his Argonauts from Medea's father Aeetes, the King of Colchis who was the brother of Circle and Pasiphae.
Sorcery runs in the family
@@nunyabiznes33 Noses run in my family.
Great job on the video. It was more of a summary rather than an explanation of Odyssey, but it served its purpose of telling this immortal story to people who are probably not aware of it. The explanation of it is mind blowing, deeply philosophical and some would say it is the first guide for how one should live life according to ancient Greeks.
Got any interesting videos or books on this?
@@helafed Unfortunately nothing translated in English. But I can give you an example with one of the events Odysseus went through and its philosophical meaning. On the event with the cyclops Polyphemus, the actual meaning of the name Polyphemus in Greek is the one who is famous or the one who has stature. As a cyclops obviously he had only one eye. So if you have someone who believe a lot in himself due to his fame and that someone has only one eye i.e. one perspective of looking at things, it would make him selfish. And in order for Odysseus to escape his doom, he had to blind that one eye. Now if you take this whole event and translate it to a philosophical guide for one's life, In order for anyone to continue the journey to wisdom, one must blind the eye of selfishness and proceed humble or else he will be lost. This method can be used with all the events mentioned in Odyssey and every time they lead to different philosophical guidelines towards wisdom, which I think is remarkable.
I've seen movies that covered the Odyssey, but never with map locations. I found that very interesting.
Glad you liked it 😊
Here in Greece, all books of the Odyssey contain a map of Europe and the Mediterannean Sea, with a thick red line and big red dots on it showing the journey and the stops Odysseus made on his way back to Ithaca.
Agreed! Map was so cool! But don't know what to think about knowing where hades is located now
I can’t believe it 😢 a Greek mythology story that doesn’t end in tragedy and dispare
Nope. Just started with it lol
One of the most beautiful (if not the most beautiful) stories portraying strengths and weaknesses we all humans share in common…..
So good, I love the fact you guys can condense these great stories into 30 minutes or so.
I’ve spent these 30 minutes with great pleasure, thank you for your work!
The art is the best part. Wish you would do it on biblical stories
The moral of the story is "Don't piss off the gods."
To be fair, that's most stories about Greek mythology. Lol
@@FantabulousFail indeed, and not just that - the concept of Hubris (being snarky and sassy VS the Olympian Gods) is the backbone of classical tragedy.
The moral is don't gloat when you gain a victory.
This channel really is one of a kind, indispensable. There are many history channels but I fail to find quality like this.
The odyssey is one of my favorite stories. Wonderfully done
Thank you for this great summary (along with that of the “Iliad”) of two classics I have wanted to read, but found too long and complicated, for over 60 years! I love the art (whose painters would be nice to know), the maps, and the simple but elegant language used to narrate the stories (nice reader, as well)!
Thank you for allowing me to get to know these timeless works in a more familiar manner so that I can do further research on my own to be able to appreciate them on a deeper level.
And the length of each video is perfect!
I enjoyed the story of Odysseus. Known it since in my grade school years and I remember the long Odyssey movie/TV series on a VCD starring Armand Assante that was presented. That was one of my memorable experiences. Plus the metal band Symphony X made an epic song about the Odyssey.
I'll have to check those out!
I can't remember where I read it, perhaps in one of the shorter stories that fill in the gaps of the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, etc, but I believe Odysseus had one final mission to accomplish after he returned home. Supposedly, when Odysseus and his men were sacking Troy, they violated or desecrated a temple dedicated to Poseidon. In anger, it was Poseidon who endlessly turned the winds and waves to keep Odysseus from reaching home for ten years.
In order to appease Poseidon, Odysseus had to travel inland with an oar until he reached a point where someone would ask him, "what's that"; a land that knew nothing about ships, or the sea, or Poseidon, God of the sea. There he had to build a temple or alter and offer a sacrifice to Poseidon; bringing the knowledge and worship of Poseidon to a land that had previously not known of him.
Думаю , что историю с веслом Одиссей придумал что бы вернуться на Огигию ,, остров Вис ,, где от Калипсо у него было двое сыновей

Thanks for sharing this Greek mythology story. I read this book (Spanish) that I grabbed randomdly thinking it was an ordinary book. However onced I began to read it, something changed my mind.. It's full of wonderful tales of greatness and defeat, setting a side the mythology voyager he encountered, the way he escaped only to find more adventure, danger, and mental-physical challenge.. Truly felt the anguish of the great warrior (Ulises in my book) wasn't sure if it was a written fictional story or driven by events because it sound too sureal but then Greek lived among God and everything evolved around that belief.. Thanks for clarifying few details for me, and refreshing the story!
