Wednesday Addams' Portrayals Throughout History 101
Wednesday Addams is a fictional character made by American cartoonist Charles Addams for his comic strip "The Addams Family" (you can see a simple drawing here). Later on, it was turned into various TV shows, movies, and other kinds of media. The character first appeared in the comic strip in 1938 and has since become a popular and iconic figure in popular culture. Wednesday is renowned for her macabre personality and dark, emotionless pale face. Then, why wednesday addams is so popular?
In many "Addams Family" franchise adaptations, she is portrayed as the daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams. She is portrayed as the elder Addams child in later adaptations as opposed to the younger sibling in earlier ones.
Generally speaking, Wednesday Addams is simply a young girl who is obsessed with death and known for her bizarre experiments. While she cares for Pugsley, she has also made numerous attempts to kill him.
Although there have been many Wednesday cartoons and real-life character portrayals over the years, I'm going to list what I believe to be four outstanding ones.
You can certainly add more in the comment section below.
0:50 The 1964 Addams Family film series
The 1964 Addams Family film series is the first live-action adaptation straight out of the comic strip; Wednesday was portrayed by Lisa Loring. She is sweet, has a bit of weirdness, and has shown strong character despite her size. She is Pugsley's younger sister in this film. At 6 years old, her weirdness can be seen in her hobbies: raising spiders and having several headless dolls. She can do ballet and judo too. Lisa Loring also plays a grown-up Wednesday in the 1977 film, The New Addams Family.
1:20 The Addams Family (1991) & Addams Family Values (1993)
The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) both featured Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams. Her character is quite stern. One could argue that this portrays Wednesday's personality more accurately. We see her as a teenager. This time, she has a romantic encounter with a young boy named Joel.
    1:34 The Addams Family (2019)
In 2019, Chloe Grace Moretz voiced Wednesday Addams in an animated version. Wednesday still exhibits her sadistic tendencies and emotionlessness, but she's bored with her isolated life. She wanted to see the world despite Morticia's objections. At one point, she was wearing colorful clothes. The most interesting part of her is her signature braided hair, which was styled like hangman's knots at both ends. Unlike the earlier versions, where she only enjoyed performing experiments on Pugsley, it is revealed in the 2021 sequel that she also loved science experiments.
    2:02 Wednesday (2022)
In 2022, Jenna Ortega portrays Wednesday in the Netflix series of the same name, for which she has received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. One thing to note here is that she hardly ever blinks in this series. Additionally, we knew right away that Wednesday had psychic visions, which I believe was a good fit for her persona. She has a lot more skills and abilities than we might imagine, as is also demonstrated. Last but not least, she has a sense of style in this one too, despite the fact that it is mostly black.
Ortega's performance in the series received considerable praise, with several critics hailing it as the best portrayal of the character yet.
There you go; Wednesday has become an iconic figure in pop culture. Her personality has become more colorful through the years.
