Then what differentiates it from one another? If the difference is only material and hardware of the phone, bigger company like Samsung would more likely to win the competition.

I own this phone and I'm from India so I'd like to add some info....
1. Display: The display is fantastic with insanely good contrast and colours, however like with the Pixel phones, this one is calibrated to sRBG and not the DCI-P3 color gamut and hence the colours don't feel that great, but it's just as good as Xiaomi displays are, and trust me, if you don't know this, Xiaomi provides one of the best displays on phones.
2 Camera: The camera on this phone is amazing in day light and the portrait mode is flagship level good but the portrait mode works only in decent lighting, the app lets you now about that. The app has very good manual controls too including ISO and shutter speed.
3Low Light: The night time and low light camera performance is quite bad but mostly coz the phone doesn't have auto HDR, using HDR, or the built-in low light mode turns out very good pics, infact using the manual controls you can change the ISO and shutter speed to get fantastic results. You'll suddenly see much better pics than you'd expect.
So yes, the phone is good and the camera needs a bit of know how to get great results.
Using the Google Camera works too, to an extent.

I've got one too! They're not that great. I believed the hype and bought one from GearBest. 8 months later - burn marks started to appear on the screen (yellowish like) that burn mark has now spread and has even appeared on the other side of the screen.

I love that more and more OEMs are making stock Android devices. Lenovo and Xiaomi make some nicely speced devices, it's cool to see more stock Android.

what people need to realize is this is a 200 DOLLAR PHONE! this thing is amazing for the price! i hate seeing all these apple fanboys comparing this thing to the latest iPhone. its like comparing a Ferrari to a Camry.
Not really about the comparision - cause owning this phone i would say it is in many (most?) ways better than iphone. There's nothing impressive to manufacture a good and expensive piece of tech. Doing the same on a tight budget - now this is something. So sure, iphone has somewhat better battery life or better screen DPI... But who on earth gives a shit if mi a1 already has very good battery life and excellent screen? Not to mention it's prettier, has better performance, has a lot better OS and so on. So in my opinion there's nothing bad in comparing mi a1 to iphone, because apple loses any way. In fact that's the main issue with apple - they're always loosing with a lot cheaper devices.
This is my first non motorola phone in over 6yrs and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good this phone has been. Bought it the first day it was launched here in india. Amazing battery life for its capacity.
Love this phone. Value for money.

Most reviews about the Mi A1 is the hifi dac which is really rare for budget phones.
dont get mislead by others, there is no hifi dac in it. If you look closely at the phone's official specification page, there is nothing that mentions DAC. I own the phone myself it indeed is pretty loud and have a really strong AMP but it does not sound good.

I own both the A1 and the LG V20 (with Quad DAC). Both of them are able to drive headphones pretty loud. The difference in sound quality is slightly noticeable only with quality high impedance headphones. So if you are just a normal user with a normal pair of earbuds, you won't feel the difference. BUT.. there is a big BUT.. A1 has some problems: at low volume and in quiet enviroments you hear some constant hissing which is pretty noticeable (look it up, the users are already complaining over this on the internet) and based on my knowledge in electronics it's a hardware problem that they will not be able to solve through a software update. Once again, if you're not the type of user that listens stuff at very low volume in the silence of the night, you won't care about this. Still, for the price, it's the best overall smartphone experience you cand get right now
I wanted a budget phone and got me a RedmiNote 4 Global Version. Sacrificed camera but got a great battery life w 4000mAh. And until now MIUI 8.5 is a fantastic experience. Two great choices in the mid range from Xiaomi.

Are you on crack? Xiaomi phones have excellent build quality and offer phones for different budgets. I've had phones made by LG, HTC, and Samsung, and NONE of them have given me an experience as good as my Redmi Note 3 Pro.

Great phone. But, after having mine for about 9 months. There's like a burn mark under the screen, near the volume button. It's like a yellowy colour & is now irritating me cos I know it's there!

Got mine about 2 weeks ago. Can only recommend. Good display, batterylife, smooth software experience, excellent build quality and monthly android updates for an incrdible price.
Definitely the best budget device.
I have a suggestion for all tech youtubers when it comes to camera: Instead of criticizing the cameras on budget phones, give the average user useful tips on how to get the best quality out of them. The way to go is manual controls, and a basic tripod. This way for a minute of effort, your low light photos will look like they have come out of high end phone. For instance I use the Lenovo P2, and the difference between low light photos taken on auto and manual is ironically "day and night". Try this, and you will be surprised how good your $200 phone can be at taking photos in low light.
Just picked this up! I'm so impressed by this phone! I'm always getting looks and people asking about my phone! It's so good!!! Only downfall is in my area I only get 3G+ but it's not a big deal!

Very worth it for the price. It's reassuring to know that phones like this still exist. Bought a Oneplus 3 last year and that's the upper limit of what I would want to spend. Oneplus isn't all that budget friendly anymore and had this year's OP5 been my option, I may not have chosen it.

Good review, but disappointed it didn't mention the static background sound through headphones when plugged in. Maybe it doesn't affect all headphones, but definitely hear it with mine

Which Android one phone is better??
It's almost 2 months I am using this phone. Battery performance is really good. But for the first time between these two months my phone was hang 2 times today. Slightly disappointed. And I buy this phone with 15499 rupees as they charge 500 rupees extra from the offline store.

I was initially confused between A1 and Moto G5S+, but after a bit of research, ordered MiA1 black variant. G5S+ is 1000 costlier, no notification led, no latest security patch, lesser battery backup, no USB Typer C port, no capacitive navigation buttons, also no IR blaster & compass. thats a huge miss. Mi A1 is overall a better choice.
Mythbusting the DAC: YES, it has a DAC.. like any other phone that still has a headphone jack :). Every phone needs a DAC (Digital to Analog Convertor) to convert ones and zeros to electrical signal waves for your headphones to emit sound. For those phones that are lacking a headphone jack, the DAC is still needed, but it is built-in the wireless headphones. Coming back to the Xiaomi A1: It has DAC, but it's just a normal DAC, nothing special. It also has an AMP (btw, also all other smartphones have/need one). The AMP takes the faint signal and AMPlify it, for you to hear it better. So, a good DAC means good sound quality (A1 has a normal DAC, so usual sound quality, not bad, just usual), and a powerful AMP means louder sound (A1 has a powerful AMP, so it can drive bigger headphones at higher volumes). Don't confuse quality with quantity :). If you own a pair of earbuds, listen to music on your phone in the subway or while walking on the street, you shouldn't care about the DAC, you won't feel any difference between the Xiaomi A1 and the LG V20/V30 let's say.. (I own both btw, so I know what I am talking about). Feel free to search the web what a DAC is and what it does before "needing" one :) Peace!
