- Finishing touches are added to the root cellar. Some compost and grass is added to roof. Inside stonework is limewashed, and a nice round hobbit door are installed and painted with green linseed oil paint.

A note to new viewers (and a reminder to others) - if you turn on closed captioning, it'll give you some information about what he's doing :)
Thanks. I'm an old viewer and didn't know that!
How do you turn on cc?
@@Hadassah-KaquoliMReno I’m on a iPad so if I tap the screen options appear around the edge of the video and one of them is the settings also looks like a gear⚙️. If you click or tap that you should get the caption option.
Yes, I learn so much from your CC notes. Thanks!
@@Hadassah-KaquoliMReno There is a little CC icon/button in the right hand corner of the screen (on an iPhone)
Josh can you show the hinge set up please, Ive waiting a year I reckon to see this completed, well done as usual.
just two strap hinges, one on each of the battens holding the door together, maybe 10" apart, you can see the battens when the door swings open in some moment.
As always, you are a demonstration of the equation bringing together, skill, patience, time, and love. Your capacity for effort has always been an inspiration. The results speak for themselves.
Thank you very much!
I agree
We have a pretty cool root cellar -- strangers and visitors sometimes ask to take a look at it (if you know what to look for, it's somewhat visible from the road). Yet it's not even close to being as cool as yours! Terrific! 😎✌️
How cool does a root cellar need to be to preserve the vegetables?
Brother is that you........
@@gerry343 To work properly, a root cellar must be able to hold a temperature of 32º to 40ºF (0° to 4.5°C) and a humidity level of 85 to 95 percent.
@@gerry343 Well, considering you want to keep your vegetables fresh for a long while, very cool. ❄️❄️☃️
@@wileycoyotesr8623 I disagree. A root cellar will be the same (more or less) as the surrounding soil, and that changes throughout the year, averaging around 55 degrees F. Obviously this varies based on where you are in the US, but NOWHERE in the lower 48 states does the ground achieve and hold a temperature of 32º to 40ºF. That's ridiculous.
welcome back i missed your vids :)
I am wondering if a garden sprayer could be used to put this on?
I have used garden sprayers to apply exterior stain to outbuildings...works great. Would think limewash would be a good candidate for the sprayer, as well.
No, because lime doesn't dissolve in water, it is just suspended and it sinks to the bottom fast. That's why you see him stir the bucket every time when he dips the brush, otherwise you dont get any lime on your brush - and wall.
I would be a bit worried it might harden up & clog the thing. It's CO2-activated, so it's on something of a clock as soon as it's mixed.
Depending on how thoroughly it was processed, it might have some dust of un-burned lime in it, which would also be a potential clogging problem.
clogs the sprayer
@@MrChickadee Thanks I hadn't thought of that
I may have missed the part of where you set hinges? Hinge for a round door cant just be found at the hardware store? Charles
The only thing missing is an old codger with a walking stick which has a rusty nail sticking out at the bottom vandalizing the door by carving his rune into it. XD Next thing you know you have Dwarves eating and drinking everything and taking you away on an unexpected journey where you fulfill your role as a thief.
Good place to hide from a tornado. A million thanks for keeping me entertained. St, Paul.
I can't get over how impressive your work is. I think you must have one of the most unique houses in the entire county. These videos are such a pleasure to watch and it was really satisfying to.see the end of this project.
That sure brings back some memories of White Washing around the neighborhood for a soda and a candy bar. It was a treat for both parties. Thanks for sharing with us Josh, you do fantastic work . Stay safe and keep having fun. Fred.
Amazing work! Hard to imagine someone doing such quality work by hand anymore. Hats off to you my friend! 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you very much!
Love it❤ Priceless work or art!
Love the traditional lime "Whitewash" so nice to see the finishing touches before the shelving for storage.
Hello, I really love all the works you've done and really wish to see more in the future! About this cellar, I'm curious if you had any problem with rain or water infiltration from the ground?!
All it's missing is a mark on the door or else how the dwarves will know its the right cellar? 😬
(This is your reminder to turn on the subtitles! as usual Mr. Chickadee types alot of explenations in those.)
Inspiring video, as always. Thank you! Best channel on RUclips!
thank you so much
Perhaps one day Mr and Mrs Chickadee will have some chicks?
I can imagine them playing in the root cellar.
Looks like you're building everything I want to build when I get my homestead land with my family. So I'm going to take notes.
Huge fan of your work. Interested what purpose the lime wash has. Stop mold growth?
Awesome job! Thanks for sharing.
Really enjoy your content sir! Thank you!
I'm truly jealous of this guy's talent, patience and ability to follow his dreams.
That UTV almost seems out of place. I'd expected a hand built, wooden wheelbarrow! Ha! Beautiful video and work as usual. Extremely inspiring material as usual.
I recently dug out my Great Grandfather's scythe and purchased some stones. About to tune it up and start learning the old method on a portion of my property.
I love having the closed captioning! Since when has it had that bigger arch and retaining walls? Is there a iv.v I missed?
some stuff was added offscreen in the interim between videos
We can all learn from the way you go at your own pace regardless, and many us happily accept that the content comes when it comes, such a contrast to most channels and a healthier attitude, not prioritised toward commercial considerations !
💙💛love watching your videos! I love nature and everything connected with it! your videos are filled with a special atmosphere that inspires me to do the same as you!
Wonderful! I really enjoy this form of educational and relaxing videos, thank you!
O , kept waiting for the rest of that build for so long 🤷 , thanks for sharing.
it looked incredible before... it looked incredible after...
I have to say it again, for a self taught carpenter/builder the quality and aesthetics are spot that on … this is true back to our roots existence and having to do so to provide a home that’s liveable and practical … not too mention making use of what’s available locally without any detriment to the environment ….many thanks for sharing your skills too the many fans that you have globally ….
Nice work, limewash really did brighten the interior.
Thanks!
I want to learn more about linseed oil paint now. Never heard of that until now.
A root cellar to envy. Hope you have some more projects soon. We’ve all missed what you’ve been up to lately.
Meditative craftsmanship!!!
I would lose my mind if I couldn’t use my powertools!
Awesome content
You are the greatest inspiration on RUclips, keep ip the great work
Thanks! Will do!
Great job as usual. Regarding the door colour, did you chose green for a particular reason?
I've been told in the past that farm building doors and window frames were painted green as it acted as a fly repellent in some way and helped to stop them entering the building.
Thanks for making the video and for taking the time to upload.
Congrats and job well done! Been waiting to see it finished, looks fantastic!
Now that's a root cellar, great build.
I stop everything to watch...and learn. So beautiful.
Thank you.
I am/You are a smoke ring of love about a furnace of singularity. ❤
Cherish every moment to starve the fear machine. Please? 😉
How did you learn everything you know?
mostly by making lots of mistakes...
Root Cellar would in Swedish be Jordkällare (Earth cellar)
Congratulations on this project's completion.
Sixty tons and what do you get, another root cellar and lesser in debt.
Absolutely gorgeous job, but you forgot to carve the, "burglar for hire," symbols on the door.
I’m thinking I would have used a yard sprayer on the walls…….but I can be lazy at times…LOL
Nice
I'd like to see how you've used the space in there. Be great to see it finished after all these years.
Wow, is that is a teaser for a build series to come showing start to finish?
What happened to the stone work above the door? They used to be much smaller, but now you've got those bigger slender pieces!
Fantastic job. Be on the lookout for an old gentleman wearing gray. He'll mess up the paint job on your oh so fine door.
Did you learn that (wetting the wall) from Mrs Chickadee? She is an Architect Scientist right? I have always especially loved your channel.
As always, amazing work... Mr. Underhill😁
Did you buy the stone? How much did it cost? Or do you have it on your land? I love watching you work the stone and wood. I want to do so much more than my body will allow. I'm having to work vicariously through you. The heart is willing, but the flesh is old and worn out.
Nice
It’s been the tradition here in Sweden to limewash chicken coops for pest control reasons. But actually, that dries out the wood and weakens it over time. Or so I’ve been told, at least. You know anything about that?
I’m sure it’s much more appropriate on stone, however, and it does brighten up the place too.
I have covered the walls of my French farm with lime, it's great because the humidity level in our house is always perfect, and thus less need for heating because the air is not overly humid in the winter months when we tend to aerate less.
They also say that lime can re-mineralise stones if they have been damaged by rain or so.
Lime is alkaline and therefore good for preventing fungi. it doesn't improve humidity. Only loam ensures a good exchange of humidity. But not in a cave like this ;-)
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Build a bed inside and make it an AirBNB. I would stay there.
Looks great and now your Hobbit cave needs some authentic furniture. Maybee you forge also some candle holders.
Is it possible to spray the lime coating on the ceiling like the water?
That is some boss stuff man. I remember you doing a little forging. Maybe do a vid or two on that blacksmith work.
Kind reminder to everyone; first part was uploaded 2 years ago, gives a hint about the amount of time and work spent on this, just incredible!
true, but to be fair it was a week here or there when I could never two years of constant work
I'd love to see an update on it! Great work man. Love your content. It is so inspiring to see what one man can do with his hands....
this video is infuriating
painting after screwing in the door handle is pure evil and gave me a stroke
good content X3
It's truly looking amazing, dude! Fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Sorry if this has already been asked but I would be very interested to know how you dealt with the door hinges and what you used.
What does the limewash do?
Brightens it so that you can see when you're inside. Anti microbial.
Antimicrobial
turn on the CC!
Will you plaster the inside to make it hobbit smooth and cosy?
food is going to enjoy maturing in that dinky cave 🫙🍾
It looks like you're almost ready for an Unexpected Party. Thanks for sharing your work.
On the plus side 60 tons of stone lasts a really long time ;)
What a fantastic root cellar 👍⭐️
Pretty sure the door knob was in the middle.
: )
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥃🥃🥃☕️☕️☕️👀👀👀👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
How many coats of limewash did you have to do
Please tell me you are going to ferment some cheeses or salami in this.
Absolutely beautiful!👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sixty Tons. 😮 great work.
👍
That looks amazing but scares the crap out of me. I’d never attempt a keyed arch ceiling made out of such heavy rock as an experiment people would actually be under.
You should definitely never build anything ever.
What was in the spray bottle, and why the whitewash
So you’re growing roots on top of your root cellar??
I refuse to use the devil's magic lightning tools for my godly creations! Oh, except my 2022 iPhone.
I know right!
Incredible. 60 tons for that! Really puts into perspective the megaliths constructed ages ago!
😊
60 tons, and whatta ya get? 😄
Congratulations on the build. You have my utmost respect for taking on a project like this. Where did you manage to get all those stones? My wish..........that I was there to help you build it. Keep up the good work!
As always, you are a demonstration of the equation bringing together, skill, patience, time, and love. Your capacity for effort has always been an inspiration. The results speak for themselves.
I like the steampunk goggles.
Great work, not for me, Clive.
What is the purpose of lime washing? Can it only be used on stone or could you use it on other materials like fired clay brick, unfired mud brick, or concrete blocks?
all masonry work can use it, not so good on wood, but can be done there too.
Fantastic series. This would be fun with kids on a small "fairy house-gnome house" scale...teaching them about arched roofs and why they work, temperatures inside, humidity, simple measurements, muddying up their hands, painting, etc.: such diversity of skills within one large project! Love it.
I was thinking all of this on a morning walk, prior to seeing this video, ie, to provide all materials ans "hire" volunteers to build an adobe house/art center, or a wattle-and-daub wigwam or an Iroquios long house as a school project for credit or simply for the fun of it. The reward would be gained experience/learned skills and then the use of the building.
Your work ethic is right up my alley. Cheers from New Hampshire.
Very nice! 👍🏻🎅🏻🇫🇮
So you are just now beginning to use it??
A gorgeous structure!!
i am very curious about the hinge or hinges!
