  • His Majesty King George V was a sailing and racing enthusiast, His beloved racing yacht "Britannia" was built in 1893 for Queen Victorias son Prince Albert Edward. She served King Albert Edward, and his son, King George V with a legendary racing career.
Britannia set the standard for yacht design, yachting writers referred to her shape as the Britannia ideal. She was a handsome vessel; Henderson's built her light and strong, "the perfect race yacht."
In 1920, King George V triggered the revival of Big Class Yachts by announcing that Britannia would be refit for racing. Although Britannia was the oldest yacht in the circuit, regular updates to her rig kept her a most successful racer throughout the 1920s. In 1931, she was converted to the J-Class with a Bermuda rig. During her 40 year racing career she won 231 races and took another 129 flags.
King George V's dying wish was for his beloved yacht to follow him to the grave, so upon his death in 1936, in honor of the late Kings wishes Britanna was towed out to St. Catherine's Deep near the Isle of Wight and sent to rest beneath the waves, with a simple garland of flowers placed on her stem-head.
Video by K1 Britannia, see britanniatrust.org and k1britannia.org - the structures which will leverage Britannia for charity around the world.

I am always surprised at the slings used to lift sea going craft where they have been known to slip and the craft slides out often to costly repairs, especially when the two slings are not attached to each others lower end.

" *Often* ", under what definition do you claim that? (I am not being facetious nor cynical, merely intrigued.)
🔸As a percentage or odds, how frequently does a "...sea going craft... slip and... slides out..."?
🔸Is there a common reason why they have done so?
🔸Is it primarily a human, materials, or process issue/failure?

How fabulous to see the magnificent yachts racing. I am proud of my Great Grandfather Lord Waring who owned the J-Class yacht White Heather II which raced with the Britannia and is seen on this video. K1 Britannia is a tremendous project.
I am eager to share my photographs and information about the J-class yachts,
    Best wishes

This has to be one of the most annoying videos on RUclips. The frantic editing and playing with special effects is completely out of synchronisation of the voice over. In the end the only piece worth watching was the historic film of the original yacht.

How egocentric of the king to order the original yacht to be sunk upon his death , a disgrace and an insult to all those who designed and created the original Brittania.

I understand that the hull was rotten. She is/was sitting on a mooring off Hythe in Southampton - The Russians build boats out of poor material which doesn't last. Some people lost a lot of money

What is the definition of "rebuilt". This is not Britannia, it is a built-from-scratch replica.
Not even a faithful one: "with full modern amenities".
I fear this yacht is going to live a life of being misrepresented to the young. What else can "come on board and be part of her history" mean ?
Incidentally...how more clearly can we see the incredible selfish arrogance of kingship, than in her royal owner's decision to destroy her. How did the craftsmen who created the original vessel feel ?

    • @Falinzin

Lyndar Lehane "Rebuilt" just means it was built again in lieu of the old one being destroyed/damaged/

Scuttling the hull was a stupid thing to do. Typical British fuzzy thinking: romantic, nostalgia, poignant, meaningless. Almost all British bad decisions over a 100 years would have been reversed by a panel of American college students.

nothing to do with' the British'. It was the private property of King George V and he decreed it in his will. I am sure most people world wide would feel it is up to an individual to decide how he disposes of his private property, especially as it pertains to their last will and testament.
