    Drill press comment here: There is an optimum drill bit rotation speed based on the thickness of the metal, the type of metal, and the size of the drill bit. I don't have that chart memorized either, but generally slower is better (it prevents heating and blunting of the drill bit.) The cut material should come off in a long thin spiral, like we saw. The other factor is the amount of pressure; a sharp drill bit should only require enough pressure to maintain the spiral cut material. Oh, starting with smaller bit and continuing with multiple passes with increasingly larger bits up to the desired size is the best way to preventing dull bit and increased frustration. Once you dull a bit, it is useless until it is sharpened. Too much pressure on a dull bit will heat it beyond the temper of the bit and ruin the bit. Apologies if you know all this but perhaps someone may find it useful.

    • @TinyShinyHome
      @TinyShinyHome  4 месяца назад +5

      Yep, all good info for sure :) We didn't really get into that in the video, but we did have to adjust the speed based on the material type and thickness. Also cutting oil makes it smoke like something's wrong but helps a lot!

      Living on earth as humanoids is 24/7 education. In US what's called "education " is mostly indoctrination into capitalism, where you sell your labor to others for cut rates and pay taxes for the privilege.
      I look at every chore as a unique learning experience...and assess its real labor value to make it seem like I made money.
      In the aviation industry, I never made over $35hr, but my labor was charged at over $165hr.
      So when I do something on my rv or vehicles, I can value it at $165hr

    Obviously
    A little late but, if you drill a pilot hole first it will make the larger drill bit last much longer...maybe .25" pilot.
    If you look at the tip of the largest bit you will notice a flat tip with different cutting angles. Thats the part of the bit that works the hardest...having to cut thru metal with more force.
    I learned this doing 3 decades of aviation fabrication.
    Both Boeing and Northrup Grumman told me, I had an analytical mind...it's a blessing and curse all rolled into one.
    My dad was a machinist at RXR and he raised me to approach everything from several perspectives. It's served me well. But nagged me occasionally.

Ashley, you are so good doing the treatment of the wood and and the brushing off the char and now using the Australian timber oil instead of the mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil. Paint the LVLs to match the 5x6s. I'm glad a lot of the "crew" are helping with the painting. Nice bracing on the posts. They look so nice up there in the notch! Wow, Jett did some great pull-ups! Putting up brackets to hang the 2x8 rafters from the container. I'm glad you are doing the welding with am experienced structural welder for this. Ashley, I think that's a great idea. With your drill press, slower rpm and more down pressure is usually better with steel. Too high of rpm and the bit does more of a friction grinding function and can overheat. Just right “speeds and feeds” and the bit will cut long curly chips and barely get hot.
