I have a '63 Mercury Monterey, basically a fancy '63 Galaxie, it also has those emergency pointers on the radio. I didn't know what they were for until now.
The 427 FE engine in this Galaxie was a top oiler design, not a side oiler, as stated. The side oiler was not introduced until '65. It was a necessary modification to help high RPM lubrication in NASCAR stockers.
+Johnnyc drums Ford unveiled it in '64, hoping to use it in NASCAR. NASCAR said no way. It was never put into a production Ford. It was available as an over the counter order through the parts department at any Ford dealer.
Being 72 I know alot about these wonderful FE 427's and the blue cresent 429. Ford went to the fast back design for better aerodynamics for NASCAR racing in 1963 1/2. The FE 427 block was totally unlike the 406 by having 4 cross bolted lower main caps, along with a special cooling process and had larger oil passages and water cooling jackets. The 427 block could not be bored past .30 over due the water jackets, plus the specially precision cast, then machined block had a very high nickle content for more strength, with extra ribbing along the lower sides of the block to make a stronger block. It was a totally different beast from all the other FE engines.Long live the FE 427. Big Bear motors has greatly improved the FE 427 with a choice of an aluminum block (weights only 125 lbs)=$5600.00. Hell of a deal, plus improved manifold, heads. 95% of the old FE 427's are done. A fact,so beware of guys like this pushing an original FE 427 due not being able to be bored over.30, and if you loose even one cross bolt main spacer (shim) that's specially made for each engine, then your screwed, then blued and tatooed with a Fool on your ass.
Kevin Oeste, you are the best! Love your easygoing yet informative style. You get the details right on the cars of this unforgettable era. Do you have any other channels on RUclips? Either way, keep up the great work👍🏻
Times change . Over sized drum brakes on the front . I watched an auction the other day . Had a car of the time period with NASCAR drum brakes ... Disc where around at the time ?
back then the strategic air command figured we would have about 6 hrs to get ready as no missles had been made then to carry a nuke and bombers would take a long time to get here.
Some bad info here. The side oiler was not available until 1965. The heads are not medium risers. They are low risers. Factory compression was 11.7. The tail lights on this car are wrong. These are from the 300 series cheap line the right ones have 4 chrome bars in them to form a cross. Nice car.... needs some tlc in the motor department.
Thanks for this post. Amazing, cool car. Good thing they had the Civil Defense radio channels. With the top down a modern day Paul Revere could zip around town really fast shouting "the Commies are coming!" (Today its not a problem, as Russia's got a puppet in the WH already! Hey, you brought up 'politics,' first.)
These cars were getting beat on the regular by Max Wedge Mopars, Super Duty Pontiac's, and 409 Chevy's. Different story though in 64 with the introduction of the Fairlane Thunderbolt and Mercury Comet 427s
@Mark Godfrey the REAL facts we're that Chrysler announced plans to release a DOHC version of the 426 Hemi to compete with the Ford 427 SOHC. So Nascar went ahead and banned them both

This episode aged extremely well.
Awesome car! the 1963 Galaxie is certainly the best looking one and it has that hot solid lifter 2 4 barrel 427. what a beautiful beast it is!

+davidkosa ; When was the SOHC 427 introduced, and was it commercially available in the 1961 Skyliner?
+Johnnyc drums Ford unveiled it in '64, hoping to use it in NASCAR. NASCAR said no way. It was never put into a production Ford. It was available as an over the counter order through the parts department at any Ford dealer.
davidkosa ; I thought it was something like that, except I thought it came out earlier. So if you see one in a Skyliner it's not period correct.
@@Johnnycdrums The last Skyliner was in 1959!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@eugeneschulte4950 ; I meant to type, "Starliner".

Best ever presentation! Most interesting, most involved, most detailed presentation I’ve seen on the show
Galaxie500 is best car ever ! love from YOKOHAMA.
Now thats the only convertible I would drive!! Wicked nasty!!! ❤️
Wow! never knew that about my radio! Just checked my 64 Galaxie and it is the same.

64 galaxies is by far the best looking in my opinion
Awesome review, in depth comments.Love the car, have a 64 Galaxie Convertible.
Guy in our home town had one exactly like this car. It would run with the 340 hp corvettes.
The transmission grenading is why the R-Code had an open rear.
Was there a better trans at the time guys could put in if they wanted to put in a posi and take them to the drags?
I thought it was Q code?
The car has the WRONG taillights!!!! It should have back up lights and a chrome star!!!!!!!
I liked the film "Crime Story" and like "Classic car" their are format together .
Times change . Over sized drum brakes on the front . I watched an auction the other day . Had a car of the time period with NASCAR drum brakes ... Disc where around at the time ?
The galaxy is pure sex. I love them. I got one last summer that im slowly bringing back to life. Beautiful cars!!
GALAXIE

I like the 1962 Skyliner a lot better, although the 1963 XL is pretty cool also.
+Johnnyc drums ; I mean 61'.
Didn't the Galaxie 500 have a chrome "X" trim unit inside the taillight lens? The lenses on this one are from a low-end Galaxie, or a Ford 300...
The63/and64rule.moutain.from.mass.sevenlitre.beast
Imagine .... Ford putting a 425 hp V8 on the street with Dual Quads, Solid Lifters and a high-lift cam!
Never happen now....
Right, now you get even better performance with much less displacement.

My dad has that 427 car
It's not for sale so stop looking it up
Who the hell was in charge of proof reading the captions? My God!
james madison The captions are auto generated by RUclips, we'll see if we can edit them. Thanks for bringing it up.
Only 411 427 Galaxie convertibles built, it’s a center oiler block not side oiler with a Low riser intake not medium riser
had a triple white one just like it with full wheel covers . that thing would fly! carbs were a bitch though.
This thing probably got 8 mpg in town, and 12 mpg on the highway, with a tailwind.
But, at a red-light on Main, NOTHING could pass it, Fer Sure....
It's at 427 Kustoms
The GTO was not the first muscle car. This car was.
Thanks for this post. Amazing, cool car. Good thing they had the Civil Defense radio channels. Typical liberal jerk.
This guy sounds just like Ron Swanson
Sounded like the ol girl could use points or timing set 🤔 , running 🏃♂️ a bit rough 🧟
Burning some oil too...
You are wrong they did have traction to order
Which is my dads workplace
Not side oiler! Center oiler until 65.
Drum brakes...chuckle
A Galaxie 500 would not have had hub caps from the factory but full wheel covers. What's up with this car?
The dog dish caps are correct for this car
500XL would have full wheel covers
How about less of a history lesson and more of these cars running and making their own "music"?
A 15x5.5 inch wheel on a big car with a 427 R-Code engine. LOL
a 63 dodge with a 413 crossram would send these fords packing
You're out of your damn mind.
A 421 SD Pontiac would too
@Mark Godfrey this car doesn't have the SOHC 427. It's just an R-Code 427. Huge difference
