    Oh, this is a muscle car with that engine and the 4 speed on the floor. No air, no power steering, no power brakes to take some of the power away from this beast. I had a 65 4 door as my first car and loved every minute of it! It had the 352 with dual exhaust and a 4 barrel, and she moved with the much smaller V-8. To this day, it had the coldest air-conditioning ever had by me in a car or truck since. The metal registers would freeze it was so cold!

    Im 66 and when i was a kid. A friend of mine, his well off dad bought him a new 64 ford galaxie 4dr hardtop. With the 427 dual quad setup & a 4spd. Black with a red interior. It was FAST and a beautiful car. We had alot of fun in that car. Years later i got a 64 2dr hardtop, 390-4spd. 62, 63 & 64 are my fav years of ford. Esp the 62-406. Nice video, thanks. Amazing. I grew up in the backseat of dad’s 65 390 LTD 4dr hardtop. His had factory A/C but dad loved to takes us to Jaxson’s Ice Cream then come home along the beach on A-1-A in Hollywood FL. All 4 windows down but the A/C blasting to counter the oppressive humidity in S Florida. 55 years later I remember those afternoons like they were yesterday.

    First car I drove when I got my license was my dad’s 1966 4 door Ford Custom 500 with a 289 and 3 speed on the column. It was a nice car surprisingly quick in the stoplight to stoplight drags in St. Louis. No power equipment, no AC. Lots of fun driving that in the late 60’s.

  • @Johnnycdrums
    @Johnnycdrums 5 лет назад +6

    Great color, and those headlight covers are awesome.
    I was unaware that was an R code thing, nice touch by Ford.
    In addition; I can assure you that AM/FM radio was a very rare option in 65'.

  • @stephenryder1995

    You guessed it right - it was an unmarked police car ordered for high speed pursuits of very bad guys. I was a cop in the 60's and 70's and my first undercover Ford police car was a 1962 Galaxie 4 dr, plain jane white. It looked like a bar of Ivory soap. But it had a very special 390 with 3 2 barrel carburetors. It had solid lifters, an Iskederien E-2 cam, a three speed stick on the column with a 4.11 rear and a 2.79 pull-out overdrive. It didn't have a radio or power steering. When we took the engine apart to blueprint it we discovered it was a 405 hp 406. It seems the Ford "Police department" was installing these things in hundreds of police cars to test the engine for durability in secret. By 1967, many highway Patrol cars throughout the country were equipped with experimental 428 Super Cobra Jet V8's - again for a durability test. This engine was subsequently offered on the 1969 Mustang Mach One. I ran into one of these rare 428 Galaxies operated by the Briarcliff Manor P.D. in Westchester County New York. It was an Ivy green 2 dr Hardtop with a white vinyl interior and a 4 speed on the floor; 4.11 rear (no overdrive) and traction Lok. In the sixties - NASCAR motors and NHRA rear ends were tested on the sly in police cars for a year or 2 by Ford. And there was no getting away from them. The one you have there is typical of the Ford DSO's (Domestic Special Order.) with pre-production super-high performance engines and running gear.

    The writers of these videos are artists, But the first line calls this car a `Green´ car. 0:00
    So it looks like Ford Starlight Blue. Even if you Googled Ford Starlight Blue, you get this car as an image. So I thought maybe my monitor was off color. 2:44 He calls it TWILIGHT TURQUOISE, which is close, but not as blue as this one.
    This is the prettiest Green I have ever seen.

      In '65 the Ford color was Twilight Turquoise, with Ocean Turquoise for the Mercury code. The color is deceiving in the video. Here's a link to paintref.com, and they show this car as the sample as well. I bought one brand new in 65 with the 4 speed and was a special order. It was in the middle of the horsepower race. You would find many family sedans with the 390 4 bbl police interceptor but they would have auto trans, power brakes and steering. Mine was exactly the same as this one manual steering brakes. Black with red interior bench seats. First new car I ever bought. Wish I still had it. Can't really remember but believe the 352 was the smallest motor offered in the Galaxie 500, there was a 6 cyl offered in the custom.

    Some people just really like sleepers, I think thats why it was ordered that way. A friend of mine had a 79 4 door malibu and he dumped a lot of money into the 350 that came with the car and it was pretty fast and he used to have a 69 Bonneville with the 335 hp 400, he just liked sleepers. I would love to have that 4 door Galaxie I bet its fun to drive.

    I love it! What a sleeper...I'd say put full wheel covers on it instead of those dog dish caps...it would look even more bread and butter, especially for that period.
    A friend's dad had a 65 Custom 300 4-door sedan (beige, even!) with the 352 and all manual everything (three on the tree...full synchro)...I remember it was bitch to park, and it didn't like being stopped much either.
    But it sure surprised a few at the stoplights.

    It was probably ordered special order exactly like it sits. I grew up during this time. I can remember seeing some of the weirdest combinations of vehicles ever ordered. Reason being, the oilfield. A lot of 'company' men and toolpushers that worked for the oil companies during the 60s and 70s were allowed to order whatever they wanted to order. The company would pay for whatever you wanted as long as you ordered it from the specific dealership or dealerships they did business with. Not just the 'key' supervisors that worked for the drilling companies but a lot of the service companies did the same thing. About every 2 years they would allow their men to get a new company car. Everything that had to do with the car was paid for by the company. You just had to keep a good expense report and turn it in every month. This included meals, lodging, and any other expenses associated with the job. This still goes on but in a very limited fashion. They will assign you a vehicle now. Most still provide vehicles to key personnel especially if they are on 24 hr call. A friend of my father ordered a Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser with any and everything that you could get in it. I'm not sure but I think it had a big 455 HO in it. Lots of strange vehicles you wouldn't think would have been ordered.

    My '65 Galaxy 500 LTD had 2 air vents, with fans, that came up to the back window deck. Does yours? It was great for us kids (before gramma gave me the car years later) because grampa smoked. He'd open the window wing vents and turn on the rear vent and the fresh air would caress our heads and the cigarette smoke would go right out the window vents.

    I think it was a trade off between the wife and husband w/ kids. He wanted this car and the only way she would sign off was that it be a 4-door. That's my opinion and it sounds logical, of course the wife didn't know one engine from another so he got his 427, with her none the wiser.

    • @seana806
      @seana806 Год назад

      That could be very well be plausible, or someone special ordered this car since it has a more upright and formal roof line compared to the two door model. Probably was special ordered since the thing that was a exclusive feature on the 4 door hardtops in 1965 and 1966 was the flow through ventilation, such a feature wasn’t available on the two door models.

    No lie, Jay Leno himself may have ordered this car as a youth. If you check out his book, 'Leading With My Chin', he mentions how, as a kid, his parents 'allowed' him to special-order a new car for them! From what I recall, it was a mid-'60s Galaxie with a big block, and his father was angry since it had a 'racing engine.' Deserves further investigation...

      Most guy's n gal's that own Galaxies only sit in car shows, lawn chair people. I raced my 66 XL on n off years and never broke anything except a rocker shaft. Billet shaft mounts took care of that! Mostly was a driver but did drag race at the track for fun, and attended the local cruise ins. If you got a hot rod you got to run it once in a while. My 390 was warmed over to about 400 hp, eddy heads, 584 lift Comp cam, 3000 stall, 4:11 gears still fine for street driving and turned 13.70s. I needed better tires traction was always a issue. On slicks it would of dropped a half a second. Never got around to buying em. I miss that car!

      The Ford's offered am/fm radios since 1963. They were not stereo but mono. Stereo Radios were not available until 68. Also the R Code 427 option did not allow for the selection of power steering. automatic and Air Conditioning. Ford said that there was no room in the engine bay for the power steering pump or the a/c compressor. They did not have a cruisomatic that could handle the torque, therefore a 4 on the floor was a mandatory option. The base price of a 65 Ford Galaxie 500 4 Dr hardtop without options was about $2736. The 427 with the mandatory 4 speed added about $1250 to the price. The red line tires cost an additional 33.00. The fm radio added another $133.00 to the ticket. All together this car's bottom sticker less tax and license was about $4250 back in 65. A very special car indeed. Incidently the 427 R codes were not offered on the Ford Wagons.

    It's definitely a muscle car. It was probably ordered by a ranking state police officer to show up his rookies with their 390 police interceptor motors!

    Should have mentioned mine was a real sleeper with no badging on the outside and the cheap hubcaps that went with the custom model. I bought mine for highway cruising. Traded it in 66 for a 455 Olds.

    It wasn't all that uncommon to see 4-doors with buckets & a 4-speed in those days. I've seen a '64 with a 390 equipped that way.

    It would be cool if this did turn out to be the Jay Leno car but it's probably unlikely that car is still around. I suspect from the specification with the lack of "fluffy bits" that this car may have been specially built by Ford to try and convince police departments and government agencies to fork over more money on R-Code cars over Interceptors. I suspect if law enforcement had gone for these in a big way there would have been a lot of mid-'60s traffic light warriors hanging their heads in shame when they got royally spanked by a four-door Galaxie sedan. That's certainly the sort of thing Ford did in the UK into the 2000s and there are still cars and vans around in specifications that were never available to the general public but have never seen service as the first name on the registration was Ford Motor Company where they were demonstration or very occasionally assessment vehicles that were loaned to the agencies to try out, though most of those were destroyed when they were returned after the assessment period was finished...
