An amazing musician. The session work he did alone (both in the UK and here in the US) is impressive to say the least. I read years ago that at one point in his career he had received offers to re-locate to L.A. to do steady session work. But I guess he passed as he decided to remain in England.

Hmmmm....you're right, I never realized that punk was quite that influential. Thankfully punk only lasted in the mainstream for two years, but it did generate post punk, and new wave, but not early 80s Glamour Rock (Tears for Fears, Duran Duran), nor mid 80s New Age. So far that's ok with me, I like Punk ok as well as New Wave, for two years those are fun, and post punk is good too, and also didn't last long. However I never realized it until you said it but I utterly can not forgive punk for giving rise to grunge, and that, my friend, lasted TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, not just two.

When I was in the last year of school all the girls were into The Bay City Rollers except me. I had class, I was a Pilot fan through and through. Got all their albums. I remember one time one of their albums was newly released. My mum gave money to get a top. I only got 50p pocket money in those days. I took the bus into Glasgow city centre to Woolworths and bought the album with my pocket money and some of the money my mum gave me for the top. I then went and picked the cheapest top I could find for 99p. When I got to the counter I was 1p short. I turned to the queue and asked if someone could give me 1p. Which someone did.
I then had to walk all the way home to Whiteinch after the Clyde tunnel. Took me a few hours but much of that time was stopping on a bench in Kelvingrove park devouring every word on the album cover and savouring how the album would sound when I finally got home. Thank goodness my mum never asked for the receipt for the top :) one of my best memories

Pilot were also the original Alan Parsons Project, with singer/bassist David Paton and guitarist Ian Bairnson staying on for some time. Indeed, all those fabulous guitar solos on those APP records were Bairnson. That duo are also on Kate Bush's early albums (that is Bairnson soloing at the end of 'Wuthering Heights'). Paton worked with Fish of Marillion, Elton John (four albums), Rick Wakeman (check RUclips) and Camel, where at one point he was renunited with original Pilot drummer Stu Tosh (who had moved on to 10cc) on the album 'On the Road - Live 1982', which is great. Listen to Camel's studio version of 'Sasquatch', which has Paton on bass and the great Simon Phillips who was enlisted on drums for that track. Pilot never reminded me of Badfinger, though Paton is tangibly influenced by Paul MaCartney (some of his solo work is more better McCartney than Sir Paul's works) and Bairnson's melodic guitar playing at times hints at the Beatles. Badfinger were SO Beatle-y yet it was 'them'...one never felt they were copycatting. I still think they were the best and most authentic of the 'new Beatles'. 'No Matter What', 'Baby Blue', 'Day After Day', 'Perfection'... all right up there with the Beatles. Todd Rundgren, when he chooses to do so, also is great at that style (he produced Badfinger, too).

Only a handful of bands sound as good or better live. This band sounds even BETTER live. Their studio sound was too "carefully'' recorded. The Eagles is probably the best at repeating their studio performances. I hate it when bands try to sing vocals different than the record. They never sound better.
