Wow! Thank you Hailey. I have been looking for a pronunciation explanation that explains tongue placement in this case for a long time. It is so clear and helpful.
❤️Thank you very much for teaching how to pronounce"ㄹ". I will keep trying to pronounce it❤ Korean language is being very easy and interesting for me with your lessons .💖So Thank you very much Hailey unnie 💖
I've watched so many tutorials on the ㄹ sound, but this was actually super helpful, I think I can pronounce it much better now!! 고마워요 ❤ Could you also upload a similar video but with the 으 sound?
What helped me was smiling with your teeth together, then make kinda like a disgusted sound so like when you see something funky and your like “uueee” if you know what I mean 😂
감사합니다 🙏 I was searching for this after realized I was pronouncing ㄹ like the Spanish r, and in words like 빨리 was staring to roll the two together like a Spanish "rr"! Seeing the tongue placement was super helpful to correct that.
Great job Hailey! That was a good explanation of a confusing concept. Your drawings of the person with their tongue are amazing too haha. Have a good day.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this... I take it this lesson is for leading with ㄹ only? Let's say for example what if I say 물? For this word when I sound ㅜ my tongue is already down, and now I need to follow with ㄹ sound. For this the only direction left is to go is back up (reverse from leading). Finally the other one that is still stumping me is the typical object marker 를. From this lesson I start with 르 just like what you showed us, but then what happens to ㄹ 받침? Does the tongue come back up to palette at this point? Thanks again, I was confused about the leading case.
This was very helpful, thank you so much!! ❤️ My only suggestion would be to include the sound at the end of a word next time. This video covered the ㄹ sound at the beginning and middle of words, but not the end, as in 말, 재발, or 헐. It was a very good video! I really appreciate how you demonstrated the tongue positions clearly. Could you make a video like this for 으, please?
I had a similar question, and I asked my native speaking friend this... I'll share his answer "so when it's lead, the tongue needs to be rolling down just like the video shows and when you say ㄹ like 물, it rolls up to the celling of the mouth. Hope it makes sense!"
Thank you Hailey for the lesson today. You are so good with picking out study material that we can actually use. So teachers in Korean don't spend the necessary time on things like how to pronounce z and r. Sorry don't have Hangul on my phone. It's hard for a person just starting out to pronounce those together.
Exactly the explanation I was looking for! Hailey, you are wonderful! I taught music in schools for many years and play saxophone, so I can hear the subtle differences between ‘ㄹ’ ‘R’ and ‘L’ but couldn’t get it correctly. “아리랑” (Arirang) is a song I would teach my classes that was very difficult because ‘ㄹ‘ is translated as ‘r’. Since the American English ‘r’ is similar to ‘ㄱ’ tongue position without the tongue touching the palate, my little singers could not sing this song very accurately. With your detailed explanation, I understand why ‘ㄹ‘ will sound subtly different in this song depending on the other letters around it and where it is in the syllable. Thank you! You are amazing!
Miss Hailey thank so much for sharing this, it clarifies way more then before. Hopefully, you will do another video for the "M" sound which sometimes sounds like a "b" for me. The drawing helped a lot to understand too. Great job and thank very much Miss Hailey!!!
Thank you for the illustrations and explanations. It is very helpful and easy to understand the correct pronunciation for ㄹnow. It has also helped me to realise that I've been pronouncing it as l and r all the while. Time to change that 😅👍
This is such an amazing video I found your drawings to be especially helpful. I can hear a difference in how I pronounce ㄹ already. Thank you, I will continue to practice and try and get used to keeping my tongue in the middle of my palate ❤
It's not much easy but not pretty much difficult ... practice can make everything..😊😊😊😊😊..special thnx to hailey...who made it easier....감 사 합 니 다...❤❤❤
I would say this is literally the best video ever seen in pronouncing ㄹ. I don't think this video could have done any better when pronouncing ㄹ. The only thing, though is that I do wish words ending with ㄹ should've been covered. Many Americans (including myself of course) struggle pronouncing words like 월.
I have been learning Korean for 4 months. And I had just started realising that this is how it should be pronounced and the gods of internet just showed me this video to clear my viewpoint. 😂 너무 감사합니다
Great job! The best way to teach a pronunciation is to go back to the phonetics, specifying tongue and mouth positions as well as other vocal modifications. After all there are so many existing concepts in phonetics, why don't we learn a bit to easy our study.
Hailey, how would you spell and pronounce my name in Korean? In English I usually simplify it and spell it Bjorn Hakon, but in Norwegian it is spelled Bjørn Håkon. The ø and å are Scandinavian letters and the ø is pronounced somewhat like the i in Sir, and the å somewhat like the o in oral (actually, I would say awe, but that's pronounced differently in different parts of the English speaking world). The j is pronounced like the y in you, not like the j in John. The rn in Bjørn is pronounced pretty much like the rn in barn. The o in Håkon is a "hopeless" sound for English speakers, but not for Koreans (I believe). It's pronounced like the initial sound in wh words like where, why, when. Start saying the wh word and the very first sound that comes from your mouth, before you come to the vowel, that's the sound you want. That's a Norwegian o, or German u for that matter, it's the same sound. Ok, folks, I tried to keep this simple and if I didn't succeed, it's because I'm not a brilliant teacher like Hailey. No, seriously, I mean it.
Amazing. Still not perfect but i could really an expressive improvement on my ㄹ sound. To draw and your explanation make it easy to understand the concept. Thank you!!
That was very informative and extremely helpful. I don't think I'm getting it quite right, but definitely learned a lot about where I was wrong and I'll keep trying!
This is almost as good as my favourite brand of Kimchi! ❤❤ Thank you for an excellent demonstration delivered with a lot of patience and a smile! Following your videos makes learning Korean fun instead of a chore. If there is a slight criticism at all, it is that evil looking monster with his red tongue! 😱😱 Don't give up on us Hailey!

Your drawings are next level Picasso 😂 So anatomically detailed.
In particular the ear, which is literally the hangul consonant being practised in the video 😊
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ😅😎

Yes, please! The 으 sound is the one that I struggle with the most, even after 5 years of study!
Its like between ee and oo
What helped me was smiling with your teeth together, then make kinda like a disgusted sound so like when you see something funky and your like “uueee” if you know what I mean 😂
This was so helpful 😭 especially the drawings of the tongue position, thank you Hailey!
Good lookin out. This helped a ton.

Hi, surprisingly, your ㄹ is the exact (for once!) match with the french L (upper case) or l (lower case). YAY ! and I agree with Ta ooN's comment :)
This actually really helpful
감사합니다 🥰
🇬🇷Thank you Hailey!!!🙂
Thankyou Hailey for lesson in this video. I am very very like your teaching. I am happy....
To pronounce the letter ㄹ, should the tongue touch the back of the front teeth, i.e. the gums, or the back of the front teeth of the palate?

Such a hard sound thank you for showing us. Please make a video of Korean intonation in reading sentences.😊

By the middle of the palate, do you mean the hard ridge behind the front teeth, or the edge of the ridge or maybe the cleft of the palate?
This was super helpful. I still have trouble not rolling my r when saying words with 를.
