Been riding Aliso for 5 years and went down Car Wreck the first time the other day. Not ashamed to say I walked a couple of sections, but next time may try to ride a little more. Way more gnarly than your video appears! Well done y'all!
A couple of things. By how her GoPro was pointed on this video she was not looking at the spot where she crashed. I seem to think that she was looking at where she crashed when she crashed. So obviously she took her attention off the bad thing and just kept looking where she wanted to go. The second thing is one of the first things my coach taught me is how to stay loose on the bike and how your arms and legs absorb shock as the bike moves underneath you. And if you keep heavy pedals, meaning you're waiting your petals you can keep your center of gravity more where it belongs. I find this exceptionally helpful in sticky spots especially since I got a 29er full suspension which makes it much easier to stay in the middle of the bike. Katie was much more relaxed on this whole tour of your ride. The breaking advice you gave is very crucial.
I Hiked that trail several years ago (Car Wreck), WISHING I had my bike to rail it. Funny story though, we made a wrong turn coming back out somehow, and ended up trespassing through a gated community to get back to the car.... lol.
It's weird how that section on Car Wreck basically from the crashed car to the switchback, can almost be even more squirrelly and sketchy than the jagged rock garden beforehand. Many crashes, like Katy's, seem to happen there. I've crashed there too and it was a faceplant as well, though on a different rock! Anyway, redemption is always sweet. Nicely done. A lot of people seem to turn off the camera at the switchback. Trail is not "officially cleaned" until the final root/rock stream crossing which can also be a little janky sonofagun. ;-)
Totally. I got hung up in the same section the very first time I rode there. Do you remember when there was an awkward drop down by where the car door is? That was fun. LOL! And yes! Nothing like a redemption ride. 👊🏾
Man, I love when you cover Aliso. It always gives me a fresh perspective on my local. HUGE congrats to Katy and, I REALLY need to break my bad braking habit! ✌🏼🤟🏼
Thanks! I have that blue one and a black trucker one. One of them I won and the other, I think my buddy from SC gave to me. I can't remember which is which. LOL!
@@mtb_alan thank you for taking the time to reply to me. 😊 maybe one day I’ll find a blue one like yours. Keep up with your great videos, I always look forward to it.
It's been so long since I've ridden Aliso, I used to all the time and love those trails. Nice to see the redemption on car-wreck! Love the manual practice on the ridge!
Thanks Dylan! I do like the AXS Shifting. It's snappy, I can shift under load, and it's never out of tune. I just got the ~$20 upgrade to replace the shifter "rocker" with a more the traditional paddle style. The rocker idea is cool, but it ends up feeling a bit unnatural.
Those tips you gave katy really work! My friend went OTB yesterday on a really steep rocky section after panicking and grabbing the front brake. Luckily he is ok!
Hey Alan - Love the videos. I'm headed down to SoCal from the Pacific NW in late June to ride with a buddy of mine. I'll be staying in Huntington Beach and was wondering - What are the must-do trails in Southern California? A bit of background.... I'm a pretty solid blue to black rider up here in the PNW. I'd say I'm mostly an XC rider (earn your turns) but love some great flowy downhill. For reference I ride a 2020 Tall Boy
Nice! Thanks for reaching out and for giving me some details. :) Not sure how many days you have, so here's a few suggestions in order of preference. ALISO You'll be pretty close to Aliso which will give you the classic SoCal experience. If you haven't seen my trail guide for Aliso, it's a nice introduction to those trails and shows parking, etc.. ruclips.net/video/wSkpl3yH1gw/видео.html It's a guide to all the trails shown in this vid. It's pretty chunky and sometimes steep but still has some flow. There's also a nice gastro pub nearby we like to go to called Laguna Beach Beer Company. BIKE PARKS I want to suggest Snow Summit, but depending on what you're into as an XC rider, you might not get as much out of it. That being said, having lift access to the singletrack off the back of the mountain is pretty nice. ruclips.net/video/iDeankTwEp8/видео.html Skypark at Santa's Village is a gem, and if you're willing to make the drive up the mountain, you won't be disappointed. Short but well-designed trails, cooler temps, good beer and food at the bottom of the trails, and just good energy all around. It's really easy to spend a whole day up there getting laps, taking breaks in the village, and getting more laps. ruclips.net/video/SVeco_K5PZM/видео.html OTHERS Santiago Oaks is another classic SoCal trail system. It can be tough in the heat as there's zero shade, but it has a nice collection of trails ranging from mellow contour trails to steep and dusty rock waterfalls. The Luge is another classic but it's kind of a one lap deal. Good to do if you wanna hit it in the morning and then something else after lunch. Hope that helps!
@@mtb_alan Thanks Alan - I really appreciate the detailed reply! Skypark sounds like a blast and I'll definitely work it into the plan. I haven't rode a bikepark before so it will be great to check out that scene.
Been trying you're new technique and it seems to help but feel like if a rock sneaks up on me I'm going over the bars for sure. A couple close calls last weekend in annadel state park home of many rock gardens.
Yikes. Make sure you’re still centered on the bike and keeping the weight behind the pedals by engaging your posterior chain (butt and hamstrings). This is actually why everyone says to drop your heels. Also check to see if you’re inadvertently transferring more weight onto your bars when you’re leas crouched. Hope that helps!
When you’re riding a trail with some flow and chunk, what sort of air pressure adjustment do you make to your tires, if any? Or, do you tend to ride the same pressures most of the time?
I pretty much run the same pressure all the time. I prefer predictability. The only time I switch is for the bike park, and then I maybe run 2psi more in both tires to have better rolling speed and to handle the quick hits when we're cooking. All that being said, I think if I were up in the PNW, I might run lower PSI in my tires.
Great video! Lovin' the channel! Have you heard of the channel Joy of Bike? They have some amazing technique videos with LeeLikesBikes. Row Anti-row It's the flow of just about every jump, hop, etc on the trail.
Thanks! Yup...I know the channel. Lee has gotten creative with terminology around what is standard knowledge in every other athletic pursuit. It's good that he's sharing that knowledge in the mtb space.
Nice Katy! Always feels better cleaning up a crash site.
You said it!
SO pumped Katy took you advice and improved..now for those darn bugs. I always seem to inhale one while huffing and puffing on the climbs!!!
Heck yeah!
LOL! Now she needs to take my "breath through your nose" advice.
Excellent job Katy, way to crush it!

That little Mario sound bite at every fist bump is awesome!!! #shredon!!!
👊🏾😆
LOL “right in the throat!!!” That was awesome

Good job Katty 🤘

Awesome! I lost it when she ate the bug. LOL

Cool walkthru redemption, good job!🤟🏻😎🤙🏻
Thanks Don! 🤘🏾
Lol I've tried hacking up a bug for hours after it got into my throat. Fun video
Hahaha! The worst...but for this, the best ending. LOL!
@@mtb_alan lol definitely
The camera makes it look so much easier that it actually is!!! Great video
True. But give the rider some credit, eh? 😆
@@mtb_alan haha, for sure!!!
Nice! I love the aliso vids. Hope for more to come. You deserve more subscribers.
Thanks! 👊🏾😃
Go Katy!

Right on Katy! That last section on car wreck is pretty chunky and she handled it with ease!
Yew! I'll pass on the message.
She handled it!

Katy was definitely smoother the 2nd time around. Definitely less tense.
💯

My face hurts just watching the crash
Good thing she had a full-face on. :)

Extra medium, hilarious. Props Katy, laters rock. Crewliciously rad day!
