Let’s see… a naturally aspirated 2.0 with 16 valves can make around 150-170 hp. Being Atkinson cycle we’re talking about 70% of the hp of a regular 4 stroke engine. That gives 120 bhp for the ICE engine. The Prime has 220bhp combined, but it doesn’t equal to the peak output of the ICE and Electric Motor. In previous generations, the combined power was about 70% of the sum of peaks. If 70% is 220bhp(combined), 100% is 315 bhp (sum of peaks). 315 (sum of peaks) - 120 (average estimated ICE bhp) = 195 bhp for the electric motor. This bhp number seems consistent with the provided acceleration figures, especially when compared to small EVs with ~200bhp (Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Kona, etc)
Hoping they come out with a GR Sport AWD. Slightly larger battery for slightly better acceleration. Slightly stiffer suspension and bushings. It will be like having your cake and eating it too.

The only 2 things this car is missing is an awd option on the prime and a GR variant. My moonshot dream for the GR variant would be to have a Honda like 7MT, 6 for fun driving while 7th is a highway optimized fuel sipping gear like a lot of old American muscle cars having the final overdrive being a gigantic drop highway gear.

I thought the motor kicked in at 25 miles an hour… Or maybe I am just thinking about the one and only Prius I’ve ever used was the second generation I think from 2006. And for clarification, you’re saying you have to get up to 40 miles an hour gradually, you can’t just slam the gas pedal down until you hit 40 and expect that whole thing to be electric (which makes sense, you need extra power to get the car to that speed so quickly;
Kirk, you mentioned the rear visibility but what about the front ? Especially when you pull in to park. I understand there are parking sensors but how do they work? Im guessing The HUD may complicate matters a bit for shorter individuals. Just curious
I disagree with your opinion on 360 camera. It is the one feature I am missing on my 2018 Mazda grand touring model. If I was buying a car in 2023, I would not get a car without 360 camera.
I like the new Prius except the dash instruments. To looks like a good package, however the question is : what really the Prius will do better than it’s major competitor Corolla hybrid?! Does it really worth the extra money? Does it drive so much better? Is it a lot more refined, smoother, quicker, quieter? I don’t think so and tbh Toyota offers same driver train in Corolla hatchback and estate in uk and Europe no wonder Prius won’t be available at all. 👍
A lot of people have pointed out, Toyota have sacrificed environmental friendliness for sleek design and technology. It’s true. Toyota have such so themselves and the MPG numbers prove it. My hope is that, at the very least this will continue to help make EV cars cool enough to pull people away from fuel only vehicles. To make hybrid and EV the new normal. Obviously, the Prius is not pulling in the same mpg as a lot of other electric vehicles. I wish they could match those better. But hopefully this is a positive step in the right direction long-term.
It has more tech than most BMWs. I've owned two and I can tell you it clobbers my X3 and 3 series. It gives my 2015 GS 450h a run for its money; just not off the starting line. I might trade my lexus for a used one when it reaches the 10 year mark.
Same here. Another reviewer said EV mode useless - uses battery alone only for few “seconds”. Kirk says opposite. Would be very happy to run car w/EV button ON - simulating the PHEV!
Do you know if it will go into electric mode while driving with the engine cold, or does the engine have to warm up completely before engaging in hybrid electric driving? Living in the Canadian prairies, it's not unusual for temperatures to dip down to 0F. I see a real advantage for the Prius Prime when driving in cold weather. If you can drive to/from work on electric without firing up the engine, that would be amazing. But the Prime doesn't have AWD...
Kirk, loving all the content you’re putting out! Question for you, does the new Prius and Corolla share the same hybrid system, and same electrical power output? The only difference being the 1.8L in the Corolla, vs the 2.0L in the Prius?
Lenny, Good question, was thinking the same thing. Why buy the Prius when you can purchase the Corolla hybrid and save several $1,000 dollars. * Prius owner here, 2nd generation. Keeping mine. No need to upgrade to impress anyone, mine is running fine...

I thought the motor kicked in at 25 miles an hour… Or maybe I am just thinking about the one and only Prius I’ve ever used was the second generation I think from 2006. And for clarification, you’re saying you have to get up to 40 miles an hour gradually, you can’t just slam the gas pedal down until you hit 40 and expect that whole thing to be electric (which makes sense, you need extra power to get the car to that speed so quickly;
Kirk, you mentioned the rear visibility but what about the front ? Especially when you pull in to park. I understand there are parking sensors but how do they work? Im guessing The HUD may complicate matters a bit for shorter individuals. Just curious
Seat can rise up so you can easily look over screen. Front viz is good. Sensors beep faster the closer you get to something
@@KirkKreifels great thanks. I'm guessing the same warning applies when one backs up too. Really appreciate it 👍
4:43 - that’s why they call the top trim “limited” lol
The craphole i live in has mostly 25 and 35mph speed limits. i never looked twice at a prius but this one might make sense for me.
$38k and no power passengers seat, and no dual climate control. From someone who’s better half is always freezing, idk how that would work.
Divorce is your best option
@@BulkingPenguin cold!
All them features and they missed one of the most important

Buy her some warm cloths :)
I disagree with your opinion on 360 camera. It is the one feature I am missing on my 2018 Mazda grand touring model. If I was buying a car in 2023, I would not get a car without 360 camera.
Different strokes for different folks
Is there enough trunk space for a golf bag and clubs without folding down the rear seat?
Yes, sideways I believe.
Does it beep in reverse?
I don't think so. I removed the beep ages ago on my 2012.
So are the trims with 17” wheels faster than the ones with 19” wheels? And how does AWD factor in?
A lot of people have pointed out, Toyota have sacrificed environmental friendliness for sleek design and technology. It’s true. Toyota have such so themselves and the MPG numbers prove it.
My hope is that, at the very least this will continue to help make EV cars cool enough to pull people away from fuel only vehicles. To make hybrid and EV the new normal. Obviously, the Prius is not pulling in the same mpg as a lot of other electric vehicles. I wish they could match those better. But hopefully this is a positive step in the right direction long-term.
I’m only halfway thru the video so apologies if you address this, but do you have more info on the Prius Prime? Does the Prius Prime get EAWD?
It has more tech than most BMWs. I've owned two and I can tell you it clobbers my X3 and 3 series. It gives my 2015 GS 450h a run for its money; just not off the starting line. I might trade my lexus for a used one when it reaches the 10 year mark.
do you think the gauges are too far away?
No but I have good vision
This could actually cover 90+% of my trips in EV only mode, but what would the battery lifespan be like doing that?
10 year 150k battery warranty
Same here. Another reviewer said EV mode useless - uses battery alone only for few “seconds”. Kirk says opposite. Would be very happy to run car w/EV button ON - simulating the PHEV!
You know a review from Dougly is coming soon 🤣
It’s probably going to be tweaked in the next couple of years or so. They may very well add fog lights and turn signals on the side-view mirrors.
Toyota just made the rest of their vehicle line-up look like garbage by comparison, in pretty much every regard.
Excellent
Oceanside-Carlsbad-Encinitas area... I used to live there... unless I'm wrong
What is the EV range with FWD Plug in?
7:28 IS THAT A SUPRA?!
The funniest things is the the new Prius looks like the old 2010 Honda Insight!
Prius went from disgusting me, to I will need to have one. Sharp.
i love it
Does anyone know If the Guardian Grey is metallic?
Kirk, loving all the content you’re putting out! Question for you, does the new Prius and Corolla share the same hybrid system, and same electrical power output? The only difference being the 1.8L in the Corolla, vs the 2.0L in the Prius?
@Kirk, Same running gear in coming Corolla Cross Hybrid?
Lenny,
Good question, was thinking the same thing. Why buy the Prius when you can purchase the Corolla hybrid and save several $1,000 dollars.
* Prius owner here, 2nd generation. Keeping mine. No need to upgrade to impress anyone, mine is running fine...
