Starting to behave like old salts I see. 2 1/2 meter swell, 25 knots o' wind , 9.5 knots o' speed and not a hair was turned!😀 Keep 'em coming guys. Loving every one.

I used to work in Algeciras & Gibraltar Ports & I have a sail boat is berthed in Alcaidesa Marina La linea. Its not unusual to have many merchant ships drifting 20 miles east of Gib. Tankers are there waiting for a favourable price for their cargo or they might load or discharge alongside to each other . There might be ships kept out there to avoid congestion in the bay & proceed in when its their turn. Ships anchor at Gibraltar to take bunkers make engine repairs & crew change . I really enjoy your videos.

Hi Guys, great channel, good to see a small cat get out there and doing it in a low cost way. We used to sail a 31ft Prout and know how it feels surfing down the fronts a following waves, exhilarating!!!

What a shame you didn't get to visit "The Rock"! We did so on a cruise a couple of years ago and so glad we did so. Amazing! So sorry you've been under the weather but with that down wind leg, things looked to be a bit better for you kids. Your boat looks to be very stable and quick. Love watching your site and look forward to each episode.
Would you please get rid of the stupid music it may be your taste but it's not mine. It is a distraction from the overall experience. Just just the sailing is enough and it's interesting. I doubt that you have music blaring at 90% of the time when you are sailing. Obviously I like your posts. It would be so much better without the music thanks
Thanks guys great video with excellent shots. Looked like you learned more about your boat in heavey weather and honed your sailing skills aswell, 9.5 knots is impressive, been on my boat (30 foot mono) before doing 7.6 on a reach she was burying her in rail got a bit twitchy soon as i could i reefed in. Might be diffrent downwind but i know i have rigging over 18 years old so is always in the back of my mind!
We were completely reefed down when we did 9.5knots 😁 it’s because we surfed the big waves. Without the surfing we were doing about 6 knots, reefed. It was an exhilarating experience 😉

Have you thought about adding a bowsprit of some sort? It could help a bit with sailing into the wind. Also sad to think of we were in spain at the same time and I didn't know...
I read of someone doing that on a Twins, but we've not really thought about it that much, the points where the bridle would have to attach would be tricky to get to, being low down right in the bow.
Next time try le canal du midi, should be a smoother ride.

that looked like fun, tackling higher winds that your used too and surfing the waves.well, I watched a video explain how a wind vane works so i'm a little bit wiser(I think). it looks quite a complicated set up to me so well done for your practicality in fitting it. excuse my ignorance but I may be asking a stupid question here, I think I understand that the windvane steers the boat with the wind but if you didn't have one, wouldn't the wind steer you in that direction with just the sails?? you can tell I have never been on a non engine boat. another great video, I really am hooked and binge watching thanks guys.

How long did you prepare yourself before starting the travel? I mean have you take any sailing courses or make any exams - like radio usage for VHF? Ryan looks like to have very good knowledge to fix_ repair boats. As well you both knowledge how to paint boats. Thanks so much for your videos. I am virtually travelling with you...

Have you ever tried using one of those yellow/orange earplugs to deal with seasickness? Its supposed to work but I have never tried it.
We've tried it without much success to be honest. Worth a go though, might work for you!

Haha we get 20% saying 'shut that music up' and 80% saying 'we enjoy the music' so we go with the majority and our own preference, glad you like it! We always welcome constructive feedback though, its led to us making some improvements I think.

Hi,
when I sail downwind longer distances I never use the main, but instead two foresails, the genua with the fixed Spinnaker pole and a smaler fock with a second pole, this way is much safer, you have not to watch the boom and the reducing and increasing of the sails is very easy. And it is easyer for the windvane to do its work.
Thanks for the tip Peter! Our wide sheeting angle makes it a dream to sail downwind under just Genoa - the headsail will stay filled until very almost dead downwind, we haven't used our spinnaker pole in ages which is really nice as I find it a pain in the butt.

@@SailingKittiwake allot of sailing liveaboards are going electric. With all the solar panels etc. Wouldn't it be worth going hybrid and keeping a smaller engine (to keep weight down) as a generator to charge battery and or run motor if needed. Best of both worlds.

Four days with no sleep on a passage! Nuts?
9 knots is good time for that boat, we are hugely dissatisfied with anything under 10 knots but it's hugely unreasonable to expect a cruising boat to match a 64' Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio ocean racer, we average around 11 knots with only a fully furled cruising Genoa, around 130℅ with 15 knots apparent on the beam, it's good fun racing on her, we've clocked 21 knots SOG before with the racing rig (Hank on Genoa, jib and main) If you've never sailed on a racing yacht, you should try and set something up, really good fun but you need at least 8 crew to handle a big fast boat like WARRIOR, the boom is longer than 'kittiwake' at 9m with a 26m high triple spreader rodded standing rigging with running backstays, hydraulic inner forestay, backstay and vang, 13 self tailing cockpit winches and twin interlinking pedestal grinders on primaries and main sheet. Sailing Kittiwake I’m in a mono right now, but would like the extra room and stability. I spoke to a marina in Falmouth who said they don’t entertain cats. Seemed strange as a Catalac 9m is a similar width to a blue water 40+ foot boat. I like afternoon cabins. Especially if they are aft. ;-)
The HT is a bluewater cat 😊 many have crossed oceans and a few even circumnavigated.

@@SailingKittiwake Yep, that's right, Gibraltar comes from the arabic words Jebel Tarik (mountain of Tarik), named after Tarik ibn Ziyad, the muslim leader who crossed from North Africa to settle in Spain. But the mosque doesn't date back to those early days. It was built in the late 90's with donated funds from the king of Saudi Arabia (at least that's what is writen above the gates).
Those drifting tankers look strange first time you find yourself in the middle of them. They just sit there and drift around waiting for their orders.
No tide in the Med, but be double wary with the weather in the Med. As you have probably discovered by now, it can change pretty fast.

It's great so far! Although we wanted some friendlier conditions than the trip up to Ibiza to start using it. Definitely more of a learning curve, but rewarding and definitely gets you thinking about sail trim more :)
There have been best conditions for the windvane, but it was not in use as it was to see, 25 to 30 kn from behind ,best conditions to make distance into the med, southern med spain is no good sailing revier, nearly no anchoriges and the harbours are expensive.
Hi Peter, we actually found some nicer anchorages than we were expecting in south Spain but they're definitely a bit spaced out.
