Some here have obviously aged better than others. The show went went on in '87, the year I turned 30, so I did watch it. It was well written, acted especially compared to most TV dramas, then or now. Leaving the now old-fashioned clothes and hair styles out of the picture (it was a product of its time) and in that way is an interesting time capsule. What HASN'T held up that well is the fact many of the characters seemed neurotic and self-centered to the point of it being a parody of a parody. The "problems" overall these people had PALE in comparison to what we're living with now. Even circa 1989 (the show's midpoint) a lot of people were struggling financially, didn't have nice homes or great jobs like many of them. The show was out of touch with many people in their 30s then, and it made them feel worse about their own lives. It's a TV show of that time, made for that time, which ultimately all shows are. Not all though are confined to their time for relatability the way '30-something' is, which wasn't across the board even then. Whining and neurotic are often leveled at it. sometimes fairly, sometimes not. I know it was not that highly rated for ABC between 1987-'91 with ratings frankly low enough to justify cancellation. The network indulged keeping it on because it won a lot of awards for quality programming. But, television is a business, and indulgences, no matter how prestigious, can only be indulged in for so long.
