- I was really looking forward to taking Paul Woodford for a spin in the Maxi, but it didn't quite go to plan. To watch more videos of Paul and I test driving the Drive Dads Car fleet, visit the@greatbritishcarjourney channel.
I could just imagine you and John Shuttleworth in an Austin Ambassador Y reg, swapping anecdotes with boring excitement, you could even have subtitles for the non Yorkshire folk...now that would be a must see?😂😂😂
if BL had you testing their cars crabbers they would have been world class machines as you would have found all the weaknesses.
I remember Sarah saying 'My dad had a Maxi.....I don't want a Maxi' on Bangers and Cash!....🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great to see Sarah back ,,she's lovely ,🥰🥰🥰,
Good to ser you again Ssjra
Lovely to see this. In the early 70s my late dad had a 1750 that was really reliable. MOst weekends in the summer my parent would drive me and my brother from Hemel Hempstead to just outside Norwich, where our grandmother lived, with a small dinghy on the roof. We would travel over on a Friday evening with me and my brother sleeping (some of the time) in the back with the seats folded flat. It was also the first car i drove (illeagally - possibly) on disussed airfields and and country tracks during our annual summer trips to Shetland. I had tried to get dad to buy a MkIII Cortina but 5-speed gearbox and onboard sleeping accomodation made up for my initial disappoinment at the arrival of the Maxi.
I always liked the Maxi. Early ones are better looking.
Wow, this brings back memories !.. My Dad had two Maxis when I was a kid, the first was a red one (like here) and it was a replacement for a green Morris Traveller. The red Maxi was replaced by a slightly newer one in 'Harvest Gold' (which in reality was a sandy beige colour !..) - Memories of days out on hot summer weekends, warm sandwiches, funny tasting Tea out of a thermos flask and having a blanket on the back seat to stop us kids burning our legs on the red-hot vinyl when we were wearing shorts.. Happy days..
To jjRider. A travel rug on vinyl seats, to protect shorts wearers from burning their legs on the seats, if the car was parked in the sun? Good idea! I saw a review of British Leyland cars in the far hotter sun of Australia! The comment THERE was that the only thing hotter than vinyl seats parked in the sun, was touching a metal door handle! Apparently, that was like touching a hotplate!
@@nygelmiller5293 Given that most of Australia is often MUCH hotter than the UK that sounds about right !
As a kid, I had the job of washing an elderly neighbours L reg burgundy Maxi, which was a tidy car, he upgraded to a 2 year old Cream X reg Maxi, which rusted very quickly, so quickly replaced with a Y reg beige Sierra
Most splendid memories, correct.
🤣🤣my dad had an (Austin) Princess so I feel your pain - great memories
Yay!! another video 🎉. Hope this becomes a regular habit 👍😊. A review with a difference but nevertheless enjoyable. My one and only ride in a Maxi was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, on the back seat of a teacher's car whilst on a school trip. The pupil next to me suffered car sickness. A covering of baked beans if I remember correctly 🤢. Anyway sure you wanted to know that 😁. Great upload from you as always 👍😊
From breaking hearts to breaking Maxis'😮
Take it round to Jodie!, she’ll have it fixed in no time. Great to see you making videos again Sarah keep them coming. ATB for now.
My late father's Maxi always broke down, I remember there was never a week went by without some breakdown or other taking place, a trip to Folkestone from the West Midlands in the early 80s was a big challenge and it broke down on arrival!
Great entertainment, my dad had the landcrab But years later a mate had a 1750 maxi and was always asking to borrow my Rover 3500 SDI. Which I didn't mind as driving his Maxi brought back fond memories of my Dads 1800 Landcrab.
Thanks you always bring a smile to my face ❤
Don't worry Sarah. As I've mentioned many times, I broke my Maxi as well! It was an insurance write off but your Maxi mishap made me look further into what happened to mine. In spite of everything it was rebuilt and spent many more years back on the road. It's finally at rest now though.
Great video guys glad I found this channel Ian x
I must say, today , initia reel seat belts seem to work better than they used to -as shown in this film! The Maxi never had much charisma, looks wise - but I do agree with Paul about THE GRILLE being nice! It looks smart in its understated way, all in black, with matching bumpers. The black contrasts well with the lovely colour! And the interior contrasts well too! And NOT just BLACK or GREY like today. And this "real car" will also have "real" thicker tyres, for comfort, and so they won't burst over pot holes, like today. Speaking of which the appalling cars of today, don't even have a spare wheel in case a tyre DOES burst! So who exactly ARE cars of today designed for?
There is one special feature shown, when lifting the bonnet, though! The very solid bonnet stay - instead of a fairly flimsy, flexy rod! VERY 1950's those solid bonnet stays!
Although no- one went anywhere today, there was still plenty to comment on, about a car from another era! Loved it!
A friends dad was a senior manager at BL
He had one whilst waiting for his new Rover.
Broke down on the second day he drove it
Those doors also were used in the aussie austin kimberly/tasman
I learnt to drive in one of these godforsaken things…. I can still remember how gutted I was when my dad went out to buy a cavalier and came back with a 1750 Maxi instead. An engine rebuild and 3 gearboxes later he wished he’d never seen it either
Holes in the floor provided free showers and extra ventilation back in the day.
The Maxi wasn't a patch on an 1800.
Good old car 🚘🚙🚗⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👏👏👏👏
I do not understand the bad experiences. We bought a 1982 Maxi brand new 2 litre. We put 98k miles on it over 5 years. It never broke down.We replaced front and rear brakes and the service consumables only. I think it is how you service and drive them!
I always thought Maxi's were horrendous.
BMW ought to own the Maxi name and use it for their larger models like the Countryman.
I'm had a maxi 1973 model in demask red, i loved that car, it didn't have the optional holes in the floor though as it think that was the maxi 2 model. .
My favourite car was the Zephyr Zodiac Mk2 , took the wife on our Honeymoon to the lake district in it, and it made it over Hard not pass , ok the radiator blew its top when we got to the top, but hey with just three forward gears you were lucky to make it to the top, then after that i got a consul 375 , why did i do that ?
Not as ugly as the Allegro... looked like a burst couch that one...😂 Don't even start me on the Vanden Plas... jeez... Still, I'm one to talk... I've still got my childhood crush on the Triumph Acclaim...😂... Aye, the old Maxi was a bonny wee thing though...😮👍🤗🏴
To Glasgowgallus. How dare you sir ! I think the Allegro looked Cute, Friendly, Recogniseable, and unpretentious. An ordinary people's car, that didn't have to pretend it was a Jag, or BMW, or anything.
@@nygelmiller5293 Touché Squire, touché... and you know what? You're right... it was an accessible car, a product of its time... hell, we're still talking about it all these decades later my friend... that says it all... Whenever I see one (all too rarely, unfortunately...), I do give and affectionate wee smile... You be well buddy, and if you ever hear of someone punting a Triumph Acclaim, let me know...🤣👍🏴xx
i had one, hated every minute i was inside the THING
Maxi's were well known for being crabbers....😅😅❤
My dads maxi would do about 30 miles and conk out without fail trouble was the next morning started first turn of the key 🗝 he traded it in got a mk3 cortina which was a joy to own according to him 😅😂😅😂
I don't know why but I really want to go to Halfords ???
13th “like” and 13’s my favourite number - hope to own 13 classics some day 😄
as an ex mechanic personally I hated them
I’d still sooner have a Maxi than a Ferrari
What yer like "Dimples" ? 🤪🤪 xx
A quite like Maxi"s Sarah having owned a couple, never had a real problem with em flower 👍👌 xx
British people , you can make again lovely cars, start it😊
Armchair on wheels they were great cars
First car I ever drove and crashed 😂
Leyland didn’t make the seat belts,so can’t really be judged on that. :)
They were from an era when cars were starting to have a built in obsolescence , but their deliberate fragility, seemed to kick in too early!
Otherwise they were a nice practical and roomy family car. 😊
Not sure why you described it as an ugly duckling, tbh Clarksonism maybe?
'Ugly Duckling'? - I think it was a good looking car.....along with it's cousin's the 1100/1300 and 1800/2200's. A 'designers car' rather than it's overstyled competitors of the time.
John Lennon crashed his Maxi in Scotland in 1969.
Rubbish
Maxi's were born to break...😮😢
I just assumed Sarah's dad was Derek Mathewson
Crikey!!!!
😂😂😂😂👍
@@Sarah-CrabbersCrabtreedouble brandy crabbers! Lol😅
Talks of holes in the floor perhaps you could find one and gently lower this video into it and get on with giving us your normal high standard.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You only need an allegro and a maestro and you will have the best collection of the so called worst cars of all time. Tho I have owned an allegro and a maestro and have to say they were what they were but their terrible reputation is undeserving.
I had an Allegro as my second car I owned and to be honest, it was 12 years old, burned oil like it was going out of fashion but I've never been in such a comfortable car since, I loved that car but rust got it in the end.
@@graemew7001 yep mine was my first car it was 10 years old when I inherited it. Yes mine burned oil to and went through a good number of front wheel bearings. But apart from that and the obligatory suspension pump up it never let me down. I eventually sold it for a capri 👍
@@garethparr9482 The only thing that failed on mine was the top suspenion joint on the front which caused the front wheel to fold in, thankfully I was only doing about 10 mph so it didn't damage the bodywork. It was soon back on the road again, good little car.
@@graemew7001 pity you didn't have MY Allegro then! It was 9 years old, and had (till then) always been garaged, so n rust. It had however been Ziebart anti- rust treated from n e w , though, and even though I didn't have a garage, it was still basically rust-free when I sold it 12 years later. It was 21 years old, and a neighbour bought it as a birthday present for his son - who was also 21 years old! So Ziebart DID work!
Lol, it’s a BL thing, it’s not broken it’s just old, and needing a little TLC. Lol
Never a good-looking car. These late models look worse than the earlier models, just like the Allegros.
