E.T. the video game was famously made in only five weeks. The designer was chosen by Spielberg because of the Raiders of the Lost Ark game he had done, which Spielberg enjoyed. Unfortunately, given the massive time limit he was under, he couldn’t properly test it before release.
As a kid I would rent movies like "Return To Oz", "The Dark Crystal" and "The Witches" specifically because they scared me...and I often briefly left the room during the parts that really scared me. Back then that was basically the equivalent of renting R-rated horror movies...and in some ways I still find them to be more scary and disturbing than the movies actually meant to scare adults.
@@80sCommercialVault Return to Oz, that one scene where she walks into the room with all the floating heads in the glass cases was pure nightmare fuel for me
Levi’s Jeans At Sears- Interesting idea to have the picture of a mountain change into someone’s legs wearing jeans in the beginning of this commercial.
I got both the E.T. and Raiders Atari video games for Christmas in '82, when I was 10. And I played both of them a lot. I know everyone hates on E.T., but I loved that game! Haha Was it amazing? No, but there were a lot worse Atari games (Pac-Man for one). I will die on the E.T. fan club mountain. lol
Howard Scott Warshaw tried under a severe time crunch. But had we all know one day a certain video game reviewer would make a movie/review of ET by 2014, and soon after later that year find out the rumors of the cartridges being dug in the dirt were true, it wouldn't have lived up to the hype that it had. As for Pacman, a proper homebrew of it would be faithful to the source moreso than the one we had in the 1980s.
Orville Redenbacher Gourmet Popping Corn and Buttery Flavored Oil- From my experience, eating popcorn without butter or any flavoring of any kind on it tastes like you’re eating those styrofoam packing peanuts.
E.T for Atari 2600-the New Mexico landfill where all the cartridges were buried was popular with treasure hunters for a time.. The Dark Crystal-wish they had made a proper sequel back then Cagney & Lacey-they better run a little bit faster to catch that gunrunner 😆 The Jeffersons-Florence:"..more like every woman's nightmare!"
The Night Before Christmas was an animated special from 1968 done by a company called Elba out of Denver, Colorado. From what I saw it was shown quite often in the Los Angeles area. It was also available on VHS. KNXT must have locally inserted the promo for that and the ET special before the local break was to begin going over the ad for Sears.

Five weeks with such limited tools they had back in the day to develop games had to be stressful
Growing up, Dark Crystal was one of my favorite films. I was drawn in by darker family films back then like Gremlins or Return to Oz.

Yep, the powder of life scene is what I was referring to and to a lesser extent the first scene with the Wheelers.
The most infamous game ever created.....at least the commercials were fun.

I concur. Pac-man on the 2600 makes E.T. look like Super Mario Bros on the NES (ok that may be a bit too generous but you get the idea).
2:34 “Merry Christmas Sally. Hope you like crappy video games.”

Del Monte Lite- Somehow, I doubt that in real life, kids would be excited about eating canned fruit like the kids in this commercial are.

Thanks, I kind of figured that promo was not an official kosher CBS promo as they sort of butchered the title of the E.T. special.
1:11 "I've just discovered a new strain of bacteria."
"Congratulations, what are you going to name it?"
"Bad breath germs."
Wish I saw these at the age of 8 in 1982.
Oh man,GEMCO in SoCal!
7:01: Looks like KNXT chopped off the Keebler commercial.
