    I was in just a few dollars on three same sized Gap long sleeve shirts in medium used condition that I picked up at the bins over a period of time. I realized they were all the same size about a month after I had already organized and stored them for future listings. Bundled them together for $35 and they sold within a week. I was quite surprised to say the least.

    I happen to collect German bayonets, so I was happy to see this video.
    The bayonet in the video is actually a German Dress Bayonet. They are non-military as they were privately purchased, usually by family members or the recruit themselves, usually celebrating the "passing out" from basic training (or even to celebrate someone's time in the military). Unlike the German combat bayonet (K98, or technically, an S84/98 bayonet), which looks slightly different, but does share some similarities, the German Dress Bayonet was never meant to be used in combat (although some soldiers did have them with them on the front line).
    You'll quite often find coloured felt in the rifle mounting slot (although these were never intended to be fitted to a rifle). The colour of felt usually represents the service (German army, navy, airforce etc).
    As long as the blade, tip and the grips are in good condition, $25 is a very good price to pay, even for the aged pitting on the pommel and the crossguard and quillion (I've seen worse).
    There is also value in the leather frog, as well as the scabbard. The leather frog will usually have cracks or crazing, but it still looks in relatively good condition. The scabbard looks ok as well. If it's been repainted, it can affect the cost.
    Also, on the blade itself, just below the crossguard/quillion, there is usually a makers stamp.
    Some are more collectable than others depending on rarity and condition.
    The real value is in German Dress Bayonets that have have been etched, but these are also regularly faked, so they are best to avoid or at least have them checked out by an expert who knows what to look out for.

    I think what you were trying to say, is look for rare COLLECTOR ITEMS. The knife is one, the Bugs Bunny is another, the battery an antique. It has a double advantage to appeal to golfers. I could see this sitting on an executive's desk who does golfing.

    Thanks so much Pete, your videos are always good thoughtful information that everyone can use. I totally agree to think outside the box when looking for good items to sell on eBay. I usually try and visit the little out of the way thrifts and best of all the GW Outlet. The outlet is a place that takes patience, but I get great unusual things there for very little money.
    Keep up the great work, you are such a good teacher and willingly share your knowledge with all of us.

    Excellent video and very true. I pay up sometimes, but the majority of the stuff I buy is pay $1, sell for $20-$30. If something looks weird I buy it. The best part is the weird stuff is still there even after hundreds of people have walked through.

    I once made $300 on a computer mouse I paid 60 cents for. Some items give a great return if they're rare enough. It was a first series smaky mouse. Red with black buttons. There will always be items that have almost zero competition. My motto is, you'll never find it if you're not out searching. I recently made $299 on a plastic bike seat I paid 4.95 for at the thrift store. Keep looking for those rare items and hidden markets people, they're out there. Cheers.

    Great video Pete! I know you know this Pete, but I thought I'd make this comment for newer reseller's reading this...that Bugs is a good score because he's big but also because he's golfing.Anytime you find a collectible that covers 2 or more genres of collecting (Bugs Bunny collectors + golf fans) you have an item with increased desirability.

    The goggles I would make a point of putting the word "STEAMPUNK" in the listing title, Steampunk is a hot search term.

      Cosplay & costume are great compliments to steampunk for key words. I sold a pair of old welding goggles for a higher price than other ones sold, probably because of those.

    • @trappedsol
      @trappedsol 9 лет назад +2

      Keyword spamming is not allowed on Ebay. If your gonna sell your crap at least list it legit. I only say this because it is SUCH a pain in the ass when your searching for something but you have to weed out 9 out of 10 listings because everybody uses the same words. Prime example? Rc rolling chassis, or "rollers". A rolling chassis comes with tires, hence the term "rolling", however if you do a search you'll find hundreds that dont come with tires! Knock it off!

    • @neuromantoo
      @neuromantoo 9 лет назад +7

      +Jane Smith Your comment would be appropriate for someone selling something that has a specific meaning as in your example. Steampunk and Cosplay are concepts that can apply to many things because the aficionados of those activities use all kinds of props in their role playing. There is no official Steampunk outfit.

    Always find some good tips to take from your videos. I am a 15 year Ebay seller, what I am finding is many of my listings, and I run about 150+ on average, are not getting many views (based on listing counter). It just seems like people are just not looking at my items that much and this is a numbers game. It is tough to get a bidding war when you can have a 30 day listing with 4-5 views total after the 30 days. Thanks again for your tips and I will stay tuned for more.

    I really like your videos. you are right, unusual sells. I sell a little on eBay and everything I've listed sells. I think a lot of people mess up by starting their auctions at 99 cents and set their reserve at say 5 bucks. the problem is if you don't have enough interested bidders to get to your reserve you don't sell. I set my starting bid at the absolute lowest price I'm willing to sell an item for then if there is only one bidder I make a sell. I was a buyer on eBay for years before ever selling and I would get really pissed off when no one else would bid against me to get to the reserve. I wouldn't get to buy the item I wanted and the seller would be wondering why their item wasn't selling.

  • @mikeplaysit
    @mikeplaysit 8 лет назад +2

    A trick I always found for selling stuff, even stuff where there is some of it already on ebay is to have the lowest price. Even though most of the time the price on my item is $29.95 versus their price being $29.99. People will always flock to the lowest price most of the time even if that price is only lower by a few cents. But other than that, yeah, if there's an abundance of the item you're selling, and nothing is setting you apart from the rest of the sellers, for example, the lowest price, most professional appearance or a ridiculously high feedback, there's nothing bringing a buyer to your item. So you have to make the buyers come to your item by doing something, and most of the time for me I've found that this means making sure that I can sell the item cheaper than everybody else.

    I think its worth mentioning that you need to have or develop an eclectic knowledge base on one of a kind or unique items in order to have the awareness to sell them. This seems to be what differentiates the mainstream sellers from the ones that can drive their price points up and branch out.. Many people sell whats familiar to them but dont become more familiar with anything else. Thanks for the videos and advice.

    The problem is , people want to make big money on eBay all the time. That's not going to happen ! It's hard to find good stuff all the time. I list my stuff lower with free shipping and am happy to make 10.00 to 20.00 profit. Not much, but if you sell 10 items a day , it adds up. You have to work to make money, and it is hard work.

    • @STOK5OH
      @STOK5OH 7 лет назад +7

      Yep. I'll always under sell what I see listed, I'm not in the hobby to collect. I see people sit on stuff for months hoping for that sucker buyer to pay up on it. Unless it's something no one else has, there's no reason to have it taking up space. If I have 2 hrs of my actual time in it, and make $100, that's a great hourly wage. Let the amateurs using reference to listed Ebay prices sit on piles of hard to sell stuff, me, I like to make it by volume.

    Clothing is kind of dead on eBay, as far as I'm concerned, unless you go to very high-end pieces or vintage. Shoes used to be my cash cow, but I've noticed that prices and demand have gone way down. However, unique items in all other categories still sell well on eBay, and can sell very fast, too. Better yet, you can offer a 'no return' policy on the unique items and people still buy. I'm only keeping 80-90 items in my store now (on average), and sell about 150/month at a pretty high avg. price.

  • @Lisa_MS64

    Keep your eyes open on trash day. Without fail, I always find at least one item to sell on Ebay. Last week, I found a FurReal battery powered toy dog, just down the street. Retails for $120. I'm sure it will sell for $50, at least. The clothes I sell are mostly dumpster finds. People clean out closets and toss the bag full of clothes in the dumpster. Take it home, sort through and keep only what you know will sell. Kids clothes, especially baby items, shoes. End/First of the month is the best time to look - folks moving in and out, apartment dumpsters will be crammed with great stuff. Maintenance crews clean out apts. for new tenants and throw out everything left behind by previous tenants. Last month I found a Food Saver Vacuum Sealer (keeping for myself) and a 1970's Lionel Train set, my husband is keeping that!

On ebay I've offered items at 50% off the retail price and still nobody buys. Yes, ebay is definitely a good platform for unique items. I collect old ( 1970s / 1980''s ), game used rubber composite soccer balls ( footballs for those outside the US ). Thing is, people often throw away the exactly thing I'm looking for. I get it, soccer balls get well used, go flat from punctures, torn seams, can stink, and they are no longer good for play. Hey, listen, these are the ones I want, and will pay really good money for one ( even if its flat and beat up ). See, I'm looking for a very particular type of vintage soccer ball ( synthetic rubber ), and willing to buy them ( even though one might think they are complete junk after decades of use ). Many people flock to eBay for old and worn/used stuff. It shouldn't matter if its broken or not, see if you can get a few dollars for it before you toss it out. You will be surprised what people are willing to pay for something ( working or not ).

    Excellent! Heavy content and good points. Maybe we can bring eBay's reputation back to the hard-to-find unusual items.
    Just curious about your eBay set-up, where does Vicky/Vickie/Vicki do the boxing up & shipping. I know you were in the eBay brain room filming.
    Also, your organization seems impeccable with everything going on there, I'm sure that would make for an interesting topic.

    a lot of Canadians are not buying from US sellers because of the Gobal shipping rip off !! Seller charges shipping, then another charge for customs, shipping and profit added makes many items not worth buying. No matter what ebay says on the majority of small items under a couple of hundred dollars if shipped through the post office for example,
    Canadians are not charged any duty or taxes ! I know from experience, my ebay feedback rating is over 1,000 and 100% positive.

    The problem with ebay is the shoppers on ebay are unbeleivably cheap! Everybody wants everything for nothing. I've listed numerous items at great prices. They usually get lots of views but nobody buys. These people are patheticly cheap. I do much better just taking my items to the local flea market. At least some of those people will actually buy stuff. I don't know what the problem is with these ebay shoppers. It's ridiculous.

      Probably because they found it cheaper. I always do searches before i list to see what theyre going for or to see how many there are like mine. If theres lots of them its harder to compete or win high bids.

      If my items do not sell on ebay I also sell them at the flea market. It is not so much that you are charging a lot the problem is the prices of shipping have drastically gone up and that discourages many ebay buyers.

    You are right on the money with looking for unique items. The "BOLO" craze has flooded the market on Ebay with the same merchandise.

    Good ideas. One thing though is sometimes it's hard to know the difference between unique stuff that's just junk and unique stuff that is desirable. Takes some experience to recognize the difference. Any chance you'd do a video showing the testing process for electronics like that receiver?

    Thanks for another great educational video Pete. One question.. what would you do if you got all your items free ? Would you let them go cheap to make a buck for more unique (expensive) items or price them competitively and wait (that's what I do)? I got all my items from the curb, twice a week, clean them, fix them (if I can) and list them. Some of them are unique, some are not and I didn't make many sales (2-5 a month) but even that helps paying my bills. I think I need to change something to get more profit. I started Etsy few months ago and Amazon MF two weeks ago so I'll see how is that going to work. Once again, thanks for sharing your video.

    Clothing does not sell on ebay. I have lots of Disney t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies etc that I purchased at Disneyworld . Sweatshirts that I paid $58.00 for at Disneyworld but when I've listed them on ebay for $12.00 nobody buys. Disney T-shirts that cost $50.00 that I've listed on ebay for 10.00 and they didn't sell. It's ridiculous. When nobody is buying items like this at these prices it's just time to give up on ebay.

      +OlskoolTV N videos (OlSkooTV) I gave up selling on ebay. I had over 800 items listed for several monthes but I was only getting 1 or 2 orders a week if that. You have to sell everything so cheap on ebay and then ebay and paypal take 13% of the sale including the shipping which I had to use to ship the order. It's very difficult to make any profit on ebay and with so few sales it just wasn't worth the effort. I decided to stick with selling at the flea markets. I get higher prices for my merchandise, I don't have ebay and paypal taking 13% of my sale and I sell a lot more merchandise!
