    • @scottjohnston8044
      @scottjohnston8044 2 года назад +7

      It was made from a piece of rail. All razor blades are made from rail because after years and millions of tons. The metal has been transformed into something no human working a forge can do. The size of the hatchet is my only issue but I understand that the bigger one would have taken a good amount of time, working with that much of the hardest steel on the planet. I would bet that edge will hold far longer than anything manufactured for the public. I just did something similar with a Vulcan splitting hatchet. It will be dull and relegated to the wood shed or broken in some way, before he has to hone this blade. I stuck around because I new there would be a need for an explanation of rail steel. The project was ruined for me at first sight of the bun. So go ask someone who is related to the feild of. Metallurgy and they can explain the molecular changes that rail goes through. I don't teach I do.

    • @angrytoast6989
      @angrytoast6989 2 года назад +1

      I agree. Yeah rail is the best worked steel available for cheap o made my anvil from it, but this guy messed up the second he cut that flat bar in half he shoulda just shaped it . Harder work but would be way more reliable.

    Years ago I made a mistake of using tempered steel to make a chisel. I heated it up, made my point the way I wanted, heated it again and then quenched it in water. It looked really nice for the work I put in it, but when I went to use it, it shattered on me. I didn't get hurt, but I did learn a valuable lesson.
