Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the axle nut with the 22 mm socket. Push the axle out while supporting the wheel. If your axle is corroded in place, get a piece of brass and a hammer. Pound on the brass, NOT ON THE THREADS! ...unless you feel like buying a new axle, then pound the hell out of the bare axle.
After the axle is out, lower the wheel slightly and move it towards the rear of the bike.
Remove the speedo housing from the wheel (there is a gear in there, it might fall out. Just be aware.) Roll the wheel forwards and Presto! Your front wheel is free.
Now you can change the tire, put a new brake rotor on, etc. etc.
Grease the speedo housing (the inside...) and put a light coat on the axle (keeps it from seizing in place.) If you put too much grease in the speedo housing (like I did), it'll ooze out from the speedo cable area. Wipe that away occasionally. Try not to let it get on the tire (that's a "while riding" concern).
To put the wheel back on, roll it between the forks and guide the rotor between the pads.
Lift the wheel enough the put the speedo assembly in place (make sure the prongs line up with the cut out on the hub) and move the wheel so it roughly lines up with the axle holes. Slide the axle through. Replace the washer and the nut. Tighten the axle nut to 58 ft * lbs and put a new cotter pin in place.

Thanks for the video. I am taking my wheel off today to get it rebalanced. When I get he bike up past 70-80 mph I get wobble in the front end. Now I know what sockets to grab and will try out my new torque wrench. Keep up the good work with the video's of the KLR maintenance we appreciate it. It is a great quick reference we can always refer to.
Well I just got trailer d home with a flat front tire on my klr! 120 km and she went flat!Hang on tight especially when you hit about 50 km she really starts to wobble. Thanks for the good video. There was some good little tips on re & re.
Excellent instructional video! Very concise and even the socket, wrench sizes and torque is mentioned! I just bought a new 2008 KLR 650 and I know I will find your videos to be a great help. Thanks
I put a light coat of grease on the axle. I figure it can't hurt. Based on no studies, I figure it keeps air (and water...) away from the metal.
I just removed and installed my KLR front wheel. I had to redo it three times until I realized the speedo housing did not line up with the slots on the wheel. Problem is it fit like it did. Then I would tighten the axle a little and the wheel did not spin so I knew it was something. Just wanted to say this needs emphasized.Check the speedo housing carefully. I also found it easier to remove the brakes.
Straight forward demo. I'll be using the info today. Thanks!
skubinder Glad it helped!
Thanks a bunch, Just had my first flat on my front tire. Should have watched the video before i took it off so i knew what to look for. was very helpful for installation. Great vid, thanks
I'm glad the video helped!
Big time, would have forgot my cotter pin if i hadnt watched. Could have saved me an accident
Good!
I got tired of cotter pins. I switched to safety pins (check Menards SKU 2016458, Model # 84522). I reuse that and haven't had any issues.
Definitly checking it out. Thanks man
Great job! It would be great if you could create a video of how to break the tire bead, patch the tube and reinstall the tire on the rim.
Glad the video helped!
Have you checked tire pressure? I would also check the steering head nut (just under the center of the handlebar); those tend to vibrate loose and the nut underneath the top bridge can loosen (this is the nut that keeps the steering in order...)
Hope you get it fixed! Ride safe.
I did mention it - 2:35 to 2:45.
It's also in the video description.
To each his own for the brakes, I guess. I find it easier (and one less thing to worry about) if I leave it in place.
excellently done. Nice editing too
I've been using Super Tech All Purpose Grease and haven't had any problems.
Thank you this was immensely helpful!
I have 1 suggestion, watch how much grease is being put in the speedo side of the wheel. I believe I put too much in mine and grease found its way up into the speedo housing. When it gets below 55' my speedo works when it wants to, odomiter is always working. Think grease made its way up the cable.
Thanks..
Thanks!
More on the way shortly.
@klrbiker That's an interesting observation. I'm guessing you have a different issue that happens coincidentally. I fill that speedo housing up with grease and have never had a problem even in temps that the battery alone can't start the bike (-10 F).
great vid.... I have an '08 KLR so its a little different
I have that video recorded; I just need to do editing and post it. I don't know when that'll be. Possibly mid-May when school's out.
@laserblade74 Congrats! Glad I could help out.
@zatikweq no... there are 4 6mm hex pinch bolts that must also be removed
Great informative video, thank you
Glad I could help!
I just had my rear tire replace... I could break the bead (of course... I didn't have the right tools. :-\ ). I'm probably going to get some tire irons (spoons) soon. I'll probably need to replace the front one in about 3,000 miles (maybe sooner; I've got 7,200 on it right now :-) )
Good job.
could you please instruct me on how to remove/change the front brake pads?greatly appreciated-last step before certification on mine
What type of grease are you using, for both the speedo and the axle. Thanks
Feel free to make a donation!
I'm not sure what that one is. I recently bought a Craftsman that looks very similar to that one and works great.
Hopefully soon,
Good Stuff.
Someone needs to get you a 2008+ KLR
and is that a Torin jack? how is it? I'm considering.

The KLR guys I talk to have trouble with the front tire cupping. Is this a disigne flaw with the break? Any help?....Great info, by the way. Thanx.
Yes; do you have one I could borrow?
Found out from the shop I take my bike to they said my speedo hub was broken. Said I have to get the whole hub fixed and a new one is $500. Anyone help me on this???
do you have to grease the shaft (axle)?
Is the grease you use on the bike the same for pretty much all the applications,or do you need all different types of grease? What is the grease you use? Thanks
Disc brake grease.
My disc is on the right side. Why is yours on the left?
After changing the front tire I put grease in the speedo housing and the housing on the other side. Put everything back together and I can hardly turn the tire? The brakes aren't working well either, any ideas.
