Now THIS is an awesome Impreza! Early Subaru Impreza WRX STI models are fantastic machines that boast rally DNA, a superb all-wheel drive system, and a potent turbocharged flat-4 engine. This particular example is especially cool, as it's one of only 400 22B STI models built - and, like all early STI variants of the Impreza WRX, it was never available here in the States. It's finished in the best color for these cars, and it features some great equipment like widened bodywork, STI-branded fog light covers, and an STI-branded exhaust tip. It's also equipped with some nice upgrades including Maxim Works headers, 18-inch Speedline wheels, a bolt-in roll cage, and a MOMO steering wheel. On top of all that, this 22B STI is offered with low mileage and a U.S. title - and I'm thrilled to offer it here on Cars & Bids!

Anyone notice…now that he’s “‘made it,” Doug doesn’t feel the need to climb into tiny back seats anymore for our entertainment? 😂
He's getting too spoiled... 🤣
Doug is the 'gold standard' of backseat head room lol. Btw he uses a chair in his basement reviews now, can you believe it, he actually sits! 😄
He also doesn’t feel the need to do any cars that aren’t sold from his website
Doug's hands are softer than his wife's
@@RetroKingOG lmao got em
As soon as Doug said 276 HP, I knew the term "gentleman's agreement" was coming 😂

276hp was burned into my memory from playing Gran Turismo.

Doug is the type of guy to review all of the remaining 398 units of the 22B. First number 085/400 and now 061/400. He forgot to mention the second cup holder this time. And I’m not sure his format has changed at all since the last time. Guess he really wanted this car on his site.
yeah usually when he does a car again it seems he really tries to highlight something different. But it's only been 3 years since the last one so this is essentially him producing the same exact video twice which seems lazy
...even though it's a bit of a beater
Except for the ones that got totally wrecked...if you think about it, this car is even rarer.

I had a chance to talk to one of the Subaru engineers at a show back when this car debuted. They said the 22B stood for 2.2 liter boxer in reference to the engine.
Thankfully there are a number of quality kits to turn normal 2.5 RS models into 22B clones these days and they have figured out how to make the 2.5 live in the 400hp range so this is a pretty easy cars to replicate if you like that style which I do
22B is also a number in Hexadecimal that equals 555; which was also Colin McRae's number.
@@kawrx2002 555 was not Colin's number. 555 was the tobacco brand that sponsored Subaru in rally
@@kawrx2002Setsuna Yuki even still remembered her rallying idol, Colin McRae and of course, his famous 555. It also ever used as the 2nd livery for Ricardo Zonta in 1999 BAR 001 F1 CAR.

I just commented the same thing about the 22B name referencing the engine configuration a few mins ago cos it was bugging me. Then I remembered I'm not a child and had to not be an A-hole.
Did you ever see the "P1" prodrive cars?
My best friend had one with 480hp and wow was this thing an animal.
Beautiful cars too. Very special
Confirming that no Impreza owner can leave their car alone.
Seriously, it's one of 400 cars and the owner had to change the wheels, the wing (the wing is not much different, why change it? The stock one looked fine?) and the rear wiper is removed leaving a nub on the rear window... Just leave the damn wiper, it's great to have.
@@volvo09 you can see from the paint damage, various dents on the car etc. that this has actually been driven and not a garage queen. I bet those wheels and wing were changed due to damage, rather than by choice, as getting 1:1 replacements would be extremely expensive.
I've had my 2012 STi since 2019. Previous owner added an exhaust and that's it for the mod list haha. I've done nothing to it and I'm still enjoying it
The carbon fiber overlay in the interior made me giggle!
All Subarus benefit from mild mods for reliability at a minimum. Add an air oil separator, big oil pan w/ baffles, and an oil cooler at the very minimum. Being Pro-tuned for whatever local fuel it will be consuming is recommended for reliability as well.
I love to see Doug do more of the old stuff... even though it's just a cars and bids plug
It’s a win win
@Brian_Eugene_Lee Tesla isn't giving it to real car reviewers, that thing is all about hype, hence why a guy who reviews cell phones reviewed a cybertruck before anyone like Doug or throttle house...
i'd say the same for review from 7 years ago but this is still fresh review... i aint watching it
@@volvo09well logically the Tesla cyber truck was all about technology and it’s technological features so it would make sense to send it to someone who specializes in tech reviews lmfao. What should Tesla have done, sent a cyber truck to someone like Cletus mcfarend to review LMFAO. Doug’s favorite and personal cars are old analog cars like the ford GT and Carrera GT which are the opposite of the cyber truck. People like Doug aren’t the target audience for the truck so why would they send him one to review. That’s like a soccer ball company sending a professional American football player a soccer ball to review😂
@@zaiyas1408 it’s still a car.
Some added quirks: (I hope Doug pins this comment, or Kennan mentions these if he ever reviews this car)
1. Stock rear wing - aside from adjustable, the rear wing also sits on top of the third brake light which is housed in a separate trim piece. The regular V5-V6 STI had a similar design albeit the third brake light being slightly raised due to the lower part of the spoiler (which is attached to the trunk) being lower than the third brake light. The STI optional double deck wing had a similar third brake light situation to the 22B but it is a bit longer and is separated from the wing itself
2. Carbon Fiber - CF strut bar was standard on 22B models. Regular STI had aluminum strut bars. Interior trim pieces are aftermarket.
3. Red intake manifold - better porting and airflow compared to regular intake manifolds, straight out of the Type R/RA editions which was the competition ready models.
4. Front bumper - 22B exclusive which was widened to pair with the fenders. Integrated grill, with a smal stalk holding the pink Subaru STI emblem. Although Subaru also offered a similar style bumperfor the regular narrowbody Impreza, it was a two-piece kit, with the grill being a separate piece.
5. Taillights - UK-spec taillights with the amber turn signal lights. Japan-spec models had clear turn signal lights similar to the front turj signal lights.
6. Auxilliary gauges - those are actually a factory option offered by Subaru, made by Lamco. They have a dedicated pod cluster that was supposed to be housed in the top central storage compartment.
7. Seats - 22B-specific. The black line across the STI logo is only available in the 22B. The next generation STi also had this seat, but without the black line across the STI logo.
8. Hood - scoop is standard, but vents are 22B-specific. Vents are enlarged, slightly raised, and are placed horizontally, regular Impreza (V3-V6) models had vertical vents with smaller openings. Even older models (V1, V2) had even tinier openings.
9. Exclusivity and rareness - Subaru produced about 400 22Bs for the Japanese market, and about 20 more for export (UK, Australia), excluding some prototypes that were given to members of the WRC team (McRae, Grist, and Prodrive). Total number produced was about 425~ units.
10. Another ultimate Subaru GC8 - Subaru also produced an even rarer first generation Impreza- dubbed the S201, a four door sedan with a wild body kit, and even more power than the 22B at 300hp, and even wilder suspension upgrades. Produced with less than 100 units, this car is even more rare and cheaper than the 22B. (Hope they review this car in the future)
Thank you for this. You could also option a factory roll cage for a few years of the gc’s. So that possible could be factory but doubt it as it was very rare. He always misses out on a lot of things or just doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to Subarus lol
What is a third brake light? It's called the High Stop light
@@nzuncovered1845n most countries it is called a third brake light...
Regular STIs also came with the carbon strut brace. Not just the 22B. And I'm pretty sure for any 92-00 Impreza, the STI and type R/RA/22B/S201 all had the same manifold within reason. I don't think the manifolds were polished and ported, and were essentially standard manifolds painted red. Some earlier type R/RA had a 5th injector next to the TB
@@u-an6821Aluminum was standard. Carbon Fiber was an option. R/RA manifolds had a larger diameter, to pair with the R/RA heads (I believe they were ported and polished)

Very cool car. Every time Doug mentioned an aftermarket modification, I just pictured the car's value slowly dropping compared to a completely stock 22B. Not that it matters much - the prior owner likely used the car in the time period, and the new owner should also do the same!
He spends the whole video justifying the modifications ☠️☠️☠️
The fully tuned Impreza 22B maybe costed about $399.000.
I think it might matter though. This is an obviously limited trim, and wouldn't be purchased to mess with and customize. It's not like the original owner would have bought not knowing that. Something's up with this car.
@@NitsujWrenches i also notice the body lines dont look quite right especially the sides of the hood, like that's way too much of a gap for me to just shrug off. something is definitely fishy about this one

The 22B stands for 2.2 Boxer.
Wudda thought that was pretty obvious but then I was remembering the way some people refer to the engine configuration as a "Flat 4" rather than a "Boxer".
What a car man.... I was lucky enough that 4 of my friends all had WRX's and STi's at the same time and I'll never forget the 1st time sitting in the passenger seat when boost hit! 😂
My mate also had an Impreza P1, and that imo is almost as special as the 22B. The power and sound of this thing was unbelievable.

"It does have back seats, but only two of them - no center, middle back seat." he says, while clearly showing the middle lap belt
Well Impreza 22B originally should've had its mid back seat.
He just phones it in. This channel is an ad for his auction
I noticed literally as he said only two back seats, there is a middle seat belt. Also the rear wipers came on alot of the JDM base market cars, but also the AU market too. My 01 I30T is the Infiniti Canadian version, so its missing the rear fog light, and rear wiper. As the Cefiro from Japan and the Maxima STR from Austrailia had. The EU also had different requirements on sedans/saloon cars. Love this car and the 90s JDM feel, fit and finish. It just worked, every time!
Worked very nicely indeed too.😊
Yup, the JDM cars got all the goods and if anything, any market other than US (and maybe Canada?) tended to be a little better. My JDM 2010 STI has self-leveling headlights, power mirrors, fog lights (front and rear), rear wiper (which is actually useful!) and probably other goodies too.
Things to actually note: the Kenwood head unit wasn’t aftermarket, it was a factory upgrade option that literally says Subaru on it. The back seat isn’t a two seater, as you can see there is a lap belt and three buckles. In the trunk there is a 6-CD changer which is why the head unit was the upgraded Kenwood unit.
The 22B is one of my favorite cars. That’s peak design, right there.
No it isn't. All my kids think that.

It’s a misnomer that the center dial changes the ratio of power between the front and rear. It’s there to allow the driver to change the locking/slipping between front and rear.
I was born 1980. I watched WRC in the 90's and was fortunate to score a slightly hail-damaged 2.5RS in 1998 while in HS. I modified it and drove the crap out of it until I sold it in the 2000s (I really wish I hadn't). The 22B was my icon going back to when it was released and I irrationally love it over every other car. If I could afford to buy a $300k car, out of all the supercars it would definitely be a 22B. I can even recognize how stupid that is.
Well even it is approven in DiRT 1.

Something nice about seeing a Doug review outside again. I get the convenience of using the offices but the outsideness adds something to it I guess
I think the reviewing in the dingy dark basement car park in front of a concrete wall backdrop made his videos looked cheap with low production values. Outside is so much better

What a great car and review Doug!!
Correction for Doug: the I/C intercooler spray "auto" function is designed to spray water on the intercooler when the engine senses climbing boost levels. The auto spray will discharge water during the boost climb and go for 5 second intervals. Only available on JDM models, but the switches can be recreated for U.S. models. My tuner makes the auto spray modules and the map change switches for changing tuner maps on the fly.

I love you Doug DeMuro. Thank you for being so passionate about cars.
I love the random location this video is filmed at. Good old Doug, wish he did more like that.
I memorized when these would show up in the used car dealer in Gran Turismo 4 because they were the best Subaru in the game (in my opinion). Try to find an Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition next! They were really crazy, with the titanium turbocharger and stuff.
I think Doug needs to make a video compiling all the flimsy cup holders and crown the true World Flimsiest Cup Holder champion
First generation Imprezas, regardless of trim, were wonderful cars to drive. The suspension just worked, the car just did what you asked it to. They did especially well on bumpy backroads, just not caring about road irregularities, with no bump steer.
Very nice, I find this one even beautiful despite it's all about performance. However, and I think you will agree with me, the one to have fro that era is no other than the Lancia Delta Integrale. For looks, design and most importantly the handling and driving experience. Probably not as easy to live with and reliable as the Subaru but certainly more fun and headturner for sure. Great video anyway as always. All the best from West Spain Doug 😊
I've never seen Doug justify so many modifications, especially on such a high end car.
A lot of mods done here are reversible, save for potentially the roll cage (which... why?), but I can't imagine that this is going to sell for near 300k.

Cars and Bids has been a real win-win... Doug gets access to more of these rare cars, we get to see more videos about them, and sellers get more awareness and attention on their listings!
Subaru liked to refer to their rally sucsess with the codes for the cars, for example RB5 refered to Richard Burns no5 car and Subaru them self said the 22b is a hexadecimal reference to the 555 Colin Mcrae car it shared the body shell with. It might look like a basic Impreza (i think that was the point) but the 22b has almost a cult following due to it's Rally pedegree, back in the 90's there was the Subaru - Mitsubishi wars in rallying and they had fans so dedecated there would be fights at events over which manufacture was best.

I would be willing to bet some of these mods were done out of necessity due to it potentially being in an accident of some sort. The OEM replacement parts would have to be extremely expensive I imagine. If I had to guess, I bet the car was in an accident where it hit a curb (or something similar) with one side of the wheels, spun around, and took off the rear bumper/spoiler and potentially took out the rear glass as well. Hands down one of my favorite cars of all time. Sadly, seems like the price has launched this into the unobtainable stratosphere.
This 22B is a bit odd. Removing the wheels, wing, gear knob and steering wheel, all items that command an incredibly high price used, and replacing them with non OEM units, as well as having a roll cage, kind of makes this too modified to be considered easy to return to factory in my opinion. If it were my money I'd buy a completely stock one, or just buy a V4 STI Type R for a fraction of the price.
As Doug points out though, you could happily daily this, knowing that you weren't going to hurt the value as much doing so. And personally I'd only buy a car to drive it.
@@phuzz00 Why would anyone daily a car like that? At this point almost everything japanese from the 90s is so overpriced. Maybe it’s worth as an investment (until the bubble bursts) but as a daily you’ll get much more bang for your buck spending it on practically anything else.
There could be a reason for these parts missing 🤔 maybe the parts where stolen or broken along the way

I would be shocked if a 22b ever dipped below £300k, i understand people outside europe won't get it but anything attached to Mcrae and wrx will have an almost cult following.
I'd want to check the history of this car before bidding on it. I have a suspicion wheels and wings are replaced because the originals were damaged somehow.

The 22B STi is special only because of it's low production numbers of barely over 400 units total made. The 22B club in Japan still meets to this day at a Subaru dealership which was started by one of the 1st 22B owners. The 22B was a vast leap in automotive and rally technology. However, I will still stand by Richard Hammond's statement of the GD chassis being the best ever built by Subaru. I may be bias because I own one, but the driver/machine connection is much more raw and pure than that of the newer models without a doubt.
Because of safety standards none of the other chassis ever had the chance to be as raw as the GD
@@bradydevergilio7478I can say with all confidence that you have a massive point in your statement. The advancement in the manual transmission/transfer case dccd control of the 2004 - 2007 STi GD chassis were a helping hand to handle excessive power applications, and it did it surprisingly well. I've seen stock drivetrains handle 700whp without issue. The added safety did tend to weigh the vehicle down a bit as the newer models from 2008 - to current have been redesigned and heavier crash protection systems have been implemented since the days of the GD.
he 22B was a vast leap in automotive and rally technology? it never won any rallies. 22b never competed
The rarity factor is hilarious in what people will pay. I can draw a one of a kind art piece, literally 1 of 1, and it won't be worth anything, but some things people will pay thru the nose for based mostly on rarity. It's an interesting quirk of the human thought process.
@@mattm7798 not if you don’t suck at art lol, dumb point that’s trying to be made
It's got more than 1 cup holder, Doug! Pull out on the black bar to the left of the defrost button and a cup holder will appear.😉 Common feature of 90s Subarus.
Beautiful car!❤
The AWD RWD adjustable bias is so coool
I had a chance to buy a 22B with damage a few years ago for like 50-60K CAD. I wonder if it was this car. I think it will still go well in the 6 figures USD with the mods and prior damage.
Fun fact, the 22b name is hexidecimal of 555, Subaru's primary sponsor in the WRC at the time.
Sti stands for sexual transmitted illness from 22 boys or 22b
#22b is -also- blue color code.
2.2 boxer
To me, one of the coolest cars ever, no exceptions. Just awesome.
Love thoes. Not aftermarket wheels in the UK. Great video
How dare they modded such a iconic car...
Yeah, how dare that guy who spent HIS money on it do what he wants with it!!!! How dare he drive it, devaluing it!!!! Such a dumb comment honestly.
I guess by 2005 this was a $25,000 car and not a $250,000 car so modding it wouldn’t have seemed so crazy
I respect the owner's choice but I think these will turn out to be the most expensive modifications in history 😂
@@Gobbbbbexplain changing the wing tho. Probably wrecked
It's a typical Japanese thing...unfortunately. I dealt with this often questionable (also form the technical point of view) mods in almost any car imported form Japan, they have to screw even the rarest cars at least with some fancy aftermarket radio.
11:48 Doug is the kind of guy who can charm the birds from the trees... to watch them go "thud" on his car's window.
Very Cool! Love this!
16:05 Hi Doug, if you look at the long black rectangle underneath the vents and 2 to the left of the hazard lights, this is actually a double drink holder. Push it in and it will pop out. Same as in my old GC8 WRX.
I don't mind most of the modifications because they seem period correct, but the replacement wing is baffling to me. Maybe this thing was in a serious rear end collision that broke the wing beyond repair. I'll be watching the auction because I'm curious what this will go for.
Passenger door color doesnt seem to match the front fender as well but it could be lighting. This car is just a little fishy hopefully the new owner gets it fully inspected
The perfect match for a solid gold vape pen.
The Subie we all wanted, and still want today.
nice! a vid about my fav car
There is absolutely zero reason to switch out the OEM adjustable rear wing for an aftermarket one that looks almost idential, and I can think of thousands (literally) of reasons not to. I'm betting this car was in an accident which damaged the rear wing and the owners couldn't afford to replace it with the OEM one from Subaru. Maybe the same is true for the wheels.
Or possibly a different 22B got damaged, and the parts were robbed off this one to rebuild it.
I love my 22B.
The 1/18 model I bought from Mont Models is so cool. It sits on my desk at work.
Love the STI. I hope one day that you will make a video of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth. ❤
#004 is here in Houston. Great video as always.
