安房りんてつ: we ride Japan's last railway on remote Yakushima Island 屋久島 or 安房森林軌道

- Warning! This video includes long un-edited scenes of a narrow gauge railway winding through dense rainforest and crossing dangerous bridges. Rail-fans, read on:
Recently Published: a detailed examination of the entire upper line: • Jomon Sugi Ancient Ced...
Looking like the set from a Studio Ghibli animation, (see 'Princess Mononoke') this remote island of the coast of southern Japan originally boasted four separate forest railways. Today, only one retains all its rails in place and although this railway has proven a popular access track to view Japan's famous Jomon Sugi Cedar, the Arakawa Forest Railway remains very much operational and has been used in recent times to transport cedar for special Temple restoration. However, the existence of this cute Japanese 'Railbus' was a complete surprise!
After a chancing across a Japanese photographer's account of his lone expedition to Yakushima Island in the 1970s, we decided to follow his footsteps and travel from Kagoshima to the Island by overnight cargo ship to arrive at dawn in late October 2019. (tsushima-keiben...) 安房森林軌道
Yakushima Island is a solidified magma dome that was uplifted so fast it failed to weather and lies between Taiwan and Kyushu in Southern Japan. We wanted to explore what remains of Yakushima's four little known 2'6" gauge forest railways which used efficient but dangerous methods and a constant gradient track to gravitate precious Cedar from the high mountains down to the coast. The 'Arakawa Forest Railway' running upstream from coastal Anbo is Japan's last operating narrow gauge forest railway. Today, the top part remains a popular walk for tourists wanting to access Jomon Sugi, Japan's oldest tree so we were lucky to walk and film the Railway's upper half just the day before we were invited by Forestry management to ride in the cab of their delightfully green Railbus or 'Gentleman's Speeder'!

I'm guiding a series of small group, narrow gauge rail tours to Taiwan and Japan. Highlights of our Taiwan tour is a visit to the spectacular Alishan Forest Railway which climbs from sea level to 2.200m in just 75 kilometers which on special occasions, still operates Shay geared locomotives!

Tourist: *HELLO*
The guys that built that track are probably long dead, but they deserve a medal.
we were amazed at the quality of the stone workmanship we filmed when we climbed 600m to locate one of the three abandoned railways on the Island : ruclips.net/video/vvpY7hR8IHU/видео.html
the really exciting part of the railway is well upstream of where we stopped to fill the radiator and return. It includes an 'S' bend over the river using a remarkable set of omega turns on a very steep grade.
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K > W0W ))))
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K Seems like pride in workmanship was lost decades ago, at least in the USA.
You can tell the men that built this track and the engine wanted to be remembered and knew they would be in the end.
@@watershed44 no they just worked hard like all japanese
I love it..... I could see that here in the US. Riding it in the winter and it warm inside with a nice cup of hot chocolate while enjoying the scenery...
I like how the track serves as a walking path as well.
it is the route to the famous 7000 year old Jomon Sugi
It took a bit of digging around, but the locomotive engine was manufacturer by Isuzu Motors Ltd. It's a type DA640 inline-six.
Amazingly small.
I am Japanese and I've been there. I walked along the railroad to see "Jomon-Sugi", the famous old cedar of the island. But, it's the first time to see a car running on this forest railway.
We were very fortunate!
Did you know there were originally four forest railways on Yakushima Island? After a steep climb, we located the remains of one of the other three: ruclips.net/video/vvpY7hR8IHU/видео.html
This is so cool! I have done some pretty amazing train trips, but I think this unique experience tops them all. Thanks for sharing.
we were very fortunate as when we were invited to meet the Forestry officials in Anbo, we had no idea where they were taking us and what we would see. Although we had walked and filmed the entire upper length of the railway on the previous day, it was a real treat to experience just a small portion again from their special Rail-Bus.

Damn I love rail transport so much.. nothing else really compares, now does it?
Thank you for this fantastically scenic ride! Cheers.
Thank you for your interest & passion.
The way he was reving up that cold Locomotive engine, I'm amazed it still works
My thoughts too. Like jeez, give the oil some time to warm up. Then again, Japanese engines are very durable.
It's a 2 stroke diesel, it'll be fine, it probably loves a cold rev. Gotta get oil into the top end!
2:42 Watch this track operator use the "point and call" system when he switches the track.
This is care and dedication for a seemingly small task.
well spotted. So very 'Japanese' attention to detail
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K How long is the entire circuit taken in the video? I would love to walk that route. I could fill up a few memory cards' worth of pictures.
@@acalthu you can walk it in a full day with a pre dawn bus from Anbo
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K i'd warn aboot factoring in the weather... during the hot humid season half a day of walking outside can mean 500m (and 2 trip to the ER) max... during the rain season even your car will need propeller and floaties while in winter you will generate enough static electricity to supercharge a Tesla...
Typhoon season is usually a remake of the hunt for red october with the namesake not being a submarine class...
@@G_de_Coligny Yakushima Island regularly records the highest rainfall in Japan. Fortunately, there was no substantial damage done to the island's infrastructure in the July 2020 floods which devastated much of central Kyushu.
Stumbled upon this video randomly. Not disappointed at all!! Such a magical ride it was.
thank you
Engines noise still sounds powerful and new after so many years passed . OMG they got a good engineers 👍
That's the cutest train ever!!
Sounds like it's powered by a lawn tractor engine.
cold engine and full rpm - bad
the Land awesome nice.
the beauty of Japan
i HOPE THEY keep it operating forever
That little trip deserves to be listed as one of the TOP SCENIC trains in the world! Beautiful Scenery! They could EASILY charge good money for a small train for tourists!
It has been mooted. There was/is even an independent website promoting such a scheme. Many Westerners travel to Yakushima Island because of the Jomon Sugi World Heritage site and 'Princess Mononoke' by Studio Ghibli so anything is possible though I would not want to see this historic gem 'commercialised' .
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K I can easily see how commercializing this could definitely EASILY ruin it - both for the impact on the rails and train, as well as the enjoyment of the walkers/hikers, not to mention what impact the increased number of people would have on the ecology of the area.
This is an incredible video. I am so happy for you that you got to experience this. Thank you for recording such a high quality video of this; I hope I can ride this line some day.
I'm sure some will find the long scenes monotonous but I left them in the edit for those who want all the detail so I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. We were indeed lucky to have the opportunity to inspect and even ride in the Manager's Railcar as it is normally off limits to all Yakushima Island visitors.
This is the best thing I watched this year.
What a ride. Japan's hidden gem. I absolutely loved this!
having walked the entire route the day before, it certainly exceeded our expectations when we were invited for "an afternoon meeting with officials from the Yakushima Forestry Office"
05:40 HELLO :)))) WOW....FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!!! i like this small Forest Railway!!! Greetings from switzerland

Wow. What an amazing train ride. What a great team for keeping it alive. Well done to them.
The maintenance required to keep that track serviceable in that winding, steep terrain just boggles my mind. Super cool ride-along!
Agreed! Please see the 'maintenance' video I shot on this railway: ruclips.net/video/udT9nZdcpyA/видео.html
That looks cuter than the trains on Thomas & Friends.
Gorgeous music. But that poor engine being caned like that while cold! Owch!
Agreed. That hurt. !
whilst the driver is certainly revving a gold engine, I think much of the 'cringe worthy' sound comes from the engine's cooling fan spinning in it's shroud. This noise is common even today on Japanese built light pickups or 'utes'
Best feature, 32 minutes without a single man talking
I hope heaven has one of these waiting for me. An all-day trip or a thousand years. Either one sounds wonderful.
Holy buttermilk biscuit butt badgers... What a ride! Thank you for sharing a glimpse of the past and one heck of a ride.
thank you for your positive review!
This is not the Shinkansen bullet train then ? LOL great video and great little railway
Excellent, and I hope the government will reinstate the railroad for tours.
Me: looks interesting, but probably not enough to prevent me from skipping...
Also me: Watches all of it unabridged...
What a beautiful documentary.
I believe this kind of railsystem might be the most efficient way to move stuff in this terrain at speed. It doesn't require as much width and groundwork as a road for cars, it's probably much safer and it gets the job done.
Its rare to me to leave long, unedited scenes in any of my rail videos but I thought it was warranted with this one knowing that viewers can always skip the tedious parts. Please see the other two short videos I also made about Yakushima Island forest railways.
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K I can take watching an uninterrupted rail journey of at least two hours. Cabview is my favorite word. Riding shotgun has always been the most relaxing thing I can do.
RUclips algorithm serving me random content. Fascinating stuff
we don't have much control over the YT algorithm but glad you liked it!
Revving the engine immediately after startup is pretty common on diesel locomotives. If they don't do that the engine will likely stall. Source: was at a railroad museum and they didn't rev the locomotive on the first try, so it stalled.
Yeah, because diesel needs the heat from compression to ignite properly. Cold engine means more energy is absorbed by cold cylinder walls and less energy to push the piston down for the next stroke.
it sounds like a petrol engine to me, with respect.
@@UltraNoobian ...A diesel engine could crack a ring by over revving when cold ..Idol up slowly unless your not pay for parts and in a hurry
Rev within boundaries I can except, but redline no fucking way
@@curiousgeorge5992 .the driver/engineer is looking for a upgrade...so he needs to cook the old ..Isuzu
That train looks very cute!
I can't believe what I'm seeing, that place looks amazing.
It is truly amazing. Yakushima is a very special place and Jomon Sugi is a World Heritage listed Cedar so popular with Westerner visitors but Arakawa is rarely visited by narrow gauge rail-fans. Until now...
So nice that you have old railways left.
In Sweden, they broke all the OLD tracks
already in the 60s and 70s.
Japan records over 1200 forest railways and some 8000km of forest trace but very few have the rails still intact.
What a wonderful little railroad in a wonderful place!
we explored the remains of several others on Yakushima but this is the last of them all.
My cousin told me that he was stationed in Yakushima when he was working for the Ministry of the Environment.
I wonder if he also rode this forest railway.
Now, on my list of things to see.
"The TRAIN goes; *VROOM! VROOM!*"
I'm a train and I approve this video!
Thsi is awesome! Wish I could have seen this when I was in Yakushima last month. Definitely going back someday. The island is like something out of jurassic park

Not only is it cool that you found it, but extremely cool that you got to ride on it. Very nice video by the way.
thank you James. we were very fortunate indeed
Very enjoyable. That tunnel at the end was a surprise!
Woow, such cool jam. Big potentian for lil tourist train lost in the jungle. Love it!
Yes indeed!
This ought to be made into an excursion scenic railroad! Carry passengers through the woods to enjoy the beauty!
Because of Studio Ghibli animations and 7,000 year old Jomon Sugi, Yakushima Island already attracts a large number of visitors so I did suggest exactly that idea to Forestry Management. Japan has several preserved 2'6" gauge steam locomotives so add the sound and scent of live steam to the forest and you really will have a crowd puller!
絶対乗ってみたいです
富山キャニオンルートの先輩になりますかね 👏

Beautuful trip! It reminds me of our Odontotos rack lailway train here in Greece. It's actually no more than 50km from my hometown!
良い動画でした!ありがとう!
Thank you!
Jeez, that engine roared when they started it up. Sounds like this little locomotive really likes to run!
Who needs circulating oil?! ;)
Man, I so want to visit Japan one day but the plane tickets are too damn expensive! What a beautiful rich country.
Japan air ticket is far cheaper than buying a 2nd class on way train ticket to London to Brighton off peak.

Beautiful. Peaceful
That motor revving up sounded like an old US Jeep 4 cylinder.
probably is a close clone of the petrol Jeep motor but much of what you hear is the fan spinning in the shroud.
Nice trip up the mountain. Really pretty scenery.

Wow, I think I dreamed something like this
the entire Island is very surreal - maybe why Studio Ghibli set an entire Japanese animated movie there
What an oddball railcar, or better railbus? Fun to watch, probably even more fun to ride! :)
I wish there were trains everywhere instead of roads
How cute!
What a great job to have! The nature is great!
It's really pretty
Yakushima Island is a very beautiful place
One of the best things I've seen on youtube! Thanks for the ride!
You're welcome!
Wow I love this. I can see myself wanting to go ride it.
Unfortunately, Arakawa is a walking track only. Work Trains are rare and the Railbus is only for Management use.
This Loco looks and sounds like it will outlast us. It's maintained well and the track doesn't seem to have have suffered too much warping. The engine also settles in well as its traveling. I'm sure fuel mileage is very high considering it doesn't pull additional carriages.
Very beautiful.
Thank you!
I really like the sound of that horn. It's much less agressive then the horns we've got in North America. Just enough to tell anyone in the way "watch out" without being totally annoying.
My local line's trains have a very mild horn. It doesn't sound like a 60 tonnes train doing 100 km/h (62 mph).
@@SimonRaahauge1973 Oh, those are definitely something else, but even our car horns are quite a bit louder. As far as I'm concerned, they are so loud that using them could startle someone and could very well be the one thing that actually ends up causing an accident.
@@jonathanlanglois2742 Normally I expect a EUR 11 Million train to sound like a train, and not a small carnival ride... I mean, it's a train, and the railroad crossings give the train first priority.... :oD
I want to walk that mountain railway as well as the Alishan mountain...if I ever can get there
OK this is officially the coolest train ever.
